악각본 <서상기> 삽화의 특징과 표현 효과 (Characteristics of Illustrations and Effects of Expressions in the “Romance of the West Chamber” Yueke-version)

초록

명청 시기 소설과 희곡 등 서사 삽화는 ‘이야기 그림’이며, 이는 이전부터의 오랜 역사 속에서 장기간 공간과 시간이 확장되는 과정을 거쳤다. 그리고 특히 명대에 들어 시공간의 확장은 본격적으로 시작되었고, 이는 개인의 욕망이 긍정되는 조류와 연관되어 문화적 다양성을 가져오는 요소가 되었다. 문자와 화면의 관계에서 볼 때 명대 삽화본은 화면이 종횡으로 증가하여 기본적인 정보를 넘어서서 독자적인 표현 영역을 넓히는 현상을 목도할 수 있다. 그중에서도 악각본 ??서상기??는 회화의 횡권 모맷을 적극 채용하여 삽화본의 영역을 넓힌 뛰어난 예라 할 수 있다.
본 논문은 먼저 악각본 ??서상기??가 지닌 횡권 포맷에 대한 분석, 화목의 장단 교착의 상황과 특징, 창본으로서의 문자와 그림과의 관계 등 구성상의 특징을 파악하여 삽화본이 다른 삽화본과 다른 점을 검토하였다. 이어서 이렇게 독특한 삽화본이 지닌 총체적인 표현 효과를 서정성, 시간성, 은유성으로 요약하였다. 위의 두 방면의 고찰을 통해 삽화본으로서의 악각본은 보다 선명하게 그 모습이 드러났고 독창성과 가독성으로 뛰어난 작품임을 확인할 수 있었다.
더구나 삽화가 ??서상기?? 극이 지닌 서정성과 시적 특징을 긴 화면으로 한껏 반영해낼 수 있었다는 점에서 역대 ??서상기?? 삽화본 가운데 높은 지위를 차지한다고 평가할 수 있다. 날개처럼 펼쳐지는 그림으로 많은 정감을 담을 수 있고, 서사의 서정성을 완미하게 표현해낼 수 있었다. 이러한 창의적인 시도는 그 뒤로도 시도가 드문 독보적이라 할 수 있다. 이로써 삽화 속의 공간은 이전의 좁은 면을 뛰어넘어 크게 확장되었다.
본고는 그동안 학계에서 전혀 언급하지 않았던 악각본 ??서상기??의 삽화 가치에 대해 구성 특징과 표현 효과 두 가지 측면에서 접근하여 새로운 의견을 내었다. 또 그것이 문학적 특성과 어울리고 서사의 내용을 보완하고 있어 상호 상승하는 효과가 있음도 지적하였다. 이러한 점들은 ‘이야기 그림’의 발전에 나타난 뛰어난 예로, 작품에 대한 이해는 물론 명청 서사 삽화를 이해하는데 있어서도 도움을 준다는 점에서 일정한 의의가 있다고 본다.

영어초록

The narrative illustrations such as novels and dramas of the Ming and Qing period are ‘story picture’, which have undergone a process of extending the space and time for a long time in the long history from before. Especially in the Ming Dynasty the expansion of the space-time began in earnest, and it became a factor bringing cultural diversity in association with the tide affirmed by individual's desire. In view of the relationship between characters and the screen, the illustration version of Ming Dynasty can witness the phenomenon that the screen increases vertically and horizontally, the illustration exceeds the basic information and expands its own expression area. Among them, the “Romance of the West Chamber” Yueke-version is an excellent example of actively adopting the scroll format and expanding the area of ​​illustration versions.
In this paper, first of all we analyze the scroll format of 『 Romance of the West Chamber』 Yueke-version, the situation and characteristics of long and short round trip of picture title, the structural features such as relation between character and image as a Singing script. Subsequently, the overall expression effect of the unique illustration version is summarized as lyricity, temporal, and metaphoricity. Through consideration of the above two directions, Yueke-version was revealed more clearly, and it was confirmed that it is an excellent work with originality and readability.
In addition, in the point that the illustration was able to fully reflect the lyrics and poetic features of the “Romance of the West Chamber” drama on a long screen, it occupies a high rank in history “Romance of the West Chamber” illustration version. It could be put a lot of emotions in a figure spreading like feathers, and It was able to smoothly express the lyrical nature of an narrative. As a result, the space in the illustration was greatly expanded beyond the previous narrow face.
This paper approaches from the two aspects of the composition of the illustration version and effects of illustration in the “Romance of the West Chamber” Yueke-version which had not been presented by academia, and now present a new idea. It also points out that it has an effect of mutual ascending with the literary characteristics and supplementing the narrative contents. I think that these points have certain significance in terms of understanding not only works but also useful for understanding the illustration of the Ming Qing Dynasty as an excellent example that appeared in the development of ‘story picture’.
