This paper traces Russian literature’s profound impact on Woolf and her journey across the Russian boundary through reading a number of Woolf’s writings: two early short stories entitled “The Mark on the Wall” and “Kew Gardens,” and three essays named “Modern Fiction,” “The Russian Point of View,” and “The Novels of Turgenev.” Woolf’s search for a new form to express her musings on life, reality, and truths starts with her attraction to the major Russian writers, such as Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Turgenev, in the Russian craze during the 1910s and 1920s. Her modernist practices of using unconventional narratives, the stream of consciousness technique, the open ending, and the combination of fact and vision, along with her seeking for the answer to the fundamental question about the purpose of life, all owe significant influence to these major Russian writers. Stretching Tolstoy’s image of the scorpion hidden in the center of flower petals, which suggests a tragic vision of life, I delve into Woolf’s own multi-layered images of the snail, which represent at times grotesque vulnerability, and at others more positive metaphors for human endeavor, radical freedom from dichotomies, and Woolf’s own creativity. Woolf’s snails create a layer of ambivalent amusement over the binary oppositions produced under conventional literary practices as well as patriarchal discourses of power and war. Utilizing the images of snails, such as autonomy, self-sufficiency, and the highest human artistic accomplishments, as they are situated on the wall, occupying liminal places, and on the leaf in a garden, remaining aloof from the anthropocentric world, I try to explicate how Woolf’s early attempts to move beyond traditional storytelling formulae begin with her traversing across the Russian boundary and result in Woolf’s fertile Russian voyage to bring her own unique style and vision out into the literary world.
