조선조 문인들의 벽 연구 ― 18세기를 중심으로 ― (A Study on Obsession of Literary Person in the Joseon Dynasty - Focusing on the 18th Century)

초록

본고에서는 18세기 조선조 문인들이 추구했던 ‘벽(癖)’에 대해 살펴보고, 아울러 벽의 사회⋅문화적 기능과 그 의미를 정리해 보았다. 벽이란 특정 사물이나 자연물 등에 몰입하거나 집착하는 현상으로 18세기 문인들 사이에서도 유행하였다. 당시 문인 지식인들의 벽에 대한 인식은 현대인이 기호나 취미 등으로 구분하는 것과 달리 복합적이다. 이 시기 벽에 대한 관점을 밝힌 인물로 윤행엄(尹行儼)⋅윤기(尹愭)⋅박제가(朴齊家)를 들 수 있다. 이들은 각각 사족(士族), 몰락양반(沒落兩班), 서얼(庶孽)이라는 신분상의 차이가 있지만, 문인으로서 벽을 향유하였다는 점에서 공통된다.
윤행엄의 경우 완물상지(玩物喪志)의 관점에서 벽을 경계할 것을 주장하였고, 윤기의 경우 보편적인 벽과 패가망신에 이르는 벽으로 구분하여 인식하였다. 박제가는 특정한 것에 몰입하거나 집착하는 벽의 가치에 주목하고 적극적으로 옹호하는 모습을 보여주었다. 한편, 18세기 문인들이 추구했던 벽은 보편성을 띠면서도 인물의 성향과 경제력 등에 따라 차별적으로 향유되었다. 개인적으로 사회의 모순을 지적하며 기록을 통해 의견을 표명하는 경우가 있는가 하면, 왕명을 띠고 연행사를 수행하는 과정에서 국적을 초월하여 우정을 나누고 연대하는 모습도 발견할 수 있다. 또한 특정 사물에 대한 벽을 집단적으로 공유하며 집단 지성의 결과물을 만들어낸 사례도 주목된다. 아울러 문화적으로는 벽을 향유하는 과정에서 외래문화를 수입하는 등 사치풍조를 조장한 면도 있지만, 자생하고 있는 문화를 발견하는 긍정적인 역할도 하였다. 이처럼 당시 문인 지식인들의 벽 추구는 성리학적 사고에서 자유롭지 못했던 경직된 분위기를 벗어나 다채로운 문화를 확산시키는 역할을 했다는 점에서 의미가 크다고 생각한다.

영어초록

In this study, the researcher looked at the ‘Obsession’ pursued by the literary persons in the 18th century Joseon Dynasty and also summarized the social and cultural functions of the Obsession and its meaning. Obsession is a phenomenon of being immersed in or obsessed with a specific object or natural object, etc., which was popular among literary persons in the 18th century. We can see that the perception of the Obsession by literary intellectuals at the time was complex, unlikely as the one being classified as taste or hobby by modern people. As the people who revealed their views on the Obsession during this period, there were Yoon Haeng-eom(尹行儼), Yoon Ki(尹愭), and Park Je-ga(朴齊家). Although there are differences in their social status such as a scholar-gentry(sajok), a fallen aristocrat and a concubines son, they had one thing in common in that they enjoyed the Obsession as literary men.
In the case of Yun Haeng-eom, he insisted on being vigilant against the Obsession from the viewpoint of Wanmulsangji (meaning losing one's heart by falling into external things) and Yun, Ki recognized Obsession by dividing it into the universal Obsession and the Obsession leading to the shame of the family. Pak, Je-ga paid attention to the value of the Obsession, which is immersed in or obsessed with a specific thing, and actively defended it. On the other hand, although the Obsession pursued by literary men in the 18th century was universally appreciated, it was also enjoyed discriminately according to the character's inclination and economic power. Some expressed their opinions by pointing out social contradictions and recording them, while others formed friendships and solidarity by transcending nationality during the process of carrying out royal orders and performing duties. There are also noteworthy cases where a group shared the Obsession for a specific object, producing a result of collective intelligence. In terms of culture, while the pursuit of the Obsession led to the importation of foreign cultures and fostered a luxurious atmosphere, it also played a positive role in discovering indigenous cultures. Therefore, the pursuit of the Obsession by the literary intellectuals at the time was very significant in that they broke away from the rigid atmosphere that was not free from Confucian thoughts and spread diverse cultures, contributing to the expansion of cultural diversity.
