凡父 金鼎卨의 『東方思想講座』와 東方學에 대한 기초적 검토 (A basic review of Beombu Kim Jeong-seol’s Eastern Thought Lecture and Eastern Studies)

초록

이 논문은 범부(凡父) 김정설(金鼎卨, 1897-1966. 향년 70세)(이하 범부)의『동방사상강좌(東方思想講座)』와 동방학(東方學)에 대해 기초적인 검토를 하는데 목적이 있다.
그동안 여러 방면에서 범부 연구가 진행되어 왔지만, 그의 생애에서 핵심이라 할 수 있는 『동방사상강좌』에 주목하고, 그의 동방학의 성격 및 내용에 대해 본격적으로 논의한 경우가 드물었기 때문이다.
이 논문은 범부의 ‘동방사상강좌’ 및 여기서 논의된 ‘동방학’의 실체를 건국대학교 부설 「동방학연구소」(1956년 설립)에서 진행된 이른바 ‘동방사상강좌’(제1강 1962년 9월 8일 시작) 13강을 중심으로 논의하였다. 범부의 ‘동방사상강좌’에 대해서는 <설립 목적, 경위>와 <강의의 내용>으로 나누어서 설명하였다.
범부의 ‘동방사상강좌’는 한국학 구축의 일환으로서 ‘동방학’의 특징을 새롭게 규정하고, 제시(천명)하기 위한 것임을 알 수 있다. 범부가 제안한 동방학은 대략 다음과 같은 내용과 의미를 갖는다.
첫째, 범부의 ‘동방학’ 구상은 서방(西方)에 대항하고, 한계에 직면했다고 판단된 서방을 동방의 사상과 문화로 대체하기 위한 것이었다. 보다 근본적으로는 서양의 ‘물질-기계’로 인한 ‘인간의 상실’에 대한 ‘위기감’에서 출발한다.
둘째, 범부가 말하는 ‘동방’이란 한반도의 사유와 문화의 범위를 넘어서서, 중국(동이족 포함), 몽골, 시베리아를 포괄하는 광범위한 개념이며, 해양보다는 대륙 쪽에 종점이 놓여있다.
셋째, 범부의 동방학 강좌는 기본적으로는 동방사상문화의 특징을 ‘음양’(유무도 포함)으로 보고 있다. 그리고 그것을 인식ㆍ파악하는 방법론으로서 직관(直觀). 나아가 즉관(卽觀)이라는 새로운 지(知)의 기법을 제시한다. 음양이라는 동방적 사유는 즉관에 의해 자연만물의 상(象. 이미지)을 캐치한 방법(=取象法)이라고 한다.
네째, 범부는 동방적 사상과 사유를 ‘순수, 고유’한 유형을 고층(古層)으로서 상정하고 그것이 현재로 전개한다는 식의 설명방식을 택한다. ‘고층→현대’라는 방식은 동방학의 시공간적 전개를, 어떤 전형이 있고 그것이 현재에까지 계승된 결과로서 보는 이른바 아키타이프 방식이라 볼 수 있다.
마지막으로, 범부의 ‘동방사상강좌’에서 살필 수 있는 새로운 한국학으로서의 ‘동방학’은 동서양철학을 포함하여 한의학, 건축학, 국어학, 국악 등의 방면에서, 아울러 당대에 영향을 주고받았을 인물들(신채호, 최남선 등)의 역사관, 인문지리학의 연관성 속에서 연구될 필요성이 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to provide a basic review on the Dongbang- sasang-gangjoa(東方思想講座. Eastern Thought Lecture) and the Dongbang-hak(東方學. Eastern Studies) by Kim Jeong-seol.
The present study is conducted because the studies on the Dongbang-sasang-gangjoa and Dongbang-hak, which is the core of his life, has not been paid attention, although research on the general public has been conducted in various fields.
Kim’s 13 lectures Dongbang-sasang-gangjoa were held at Dongbang-hak- yeonguso(東方學硏究所. Eastern Studies Research Institute), established in 1956, of Keongug University. The lecture was held for about 3 months from September to December in 1962. This study focuses on these lectures. In this study, the purpose and reason for the establishment of the lectures, as well as the form and content, were separately explained.
Beobu’s lectures were a means of establishing his Korean studies. He tried to define and present the characteristics of Eastern Studies anew. The contents and significance of Eastern Studies suggested by Beombu are as follows; It can be seen that the ‘Lecture on Eastern Thoughts’ by Beombu is intended to newly define and present the characteristics of ‘Eastern Education’ as part of the construction of Korean studies. The contents and meaning of Eastern Vacations proposed by Beombu are as follows.
First, the idea of Eastern Studies by Beombu was to oppose the West. He judged that Western civilization at that time was facing its limits. Therefore, it was intended to respond to the crisis of the West with the ideology and culture of the East. More fundamentally, Beombu start from the crisis about the loss of human beings caused by the material and machine of the West.
Second, the East in Beombu’s terms goes beyond the scope of thought and culture on the Korean Peninsula and also includes China, the Dongi people, Mongolia, and Siberia. It has an endpoint on the continent rather than the ocean.
Third, Beombu’s Eastern Studies basically view the characteristics of Eastern ideological culture as Yin-Yang(including presence and absence). In addition, a method to recognize and grasp it, a new technique of knowledge called Jikguan(直觀. Intuition), Jeukgan(卽觀. get it as it is), Chosangbeop(取象法. Get an image of an object).
Fourth, Beombu assumes Eastern thought as ancient, pure and unique, and then it develops into the present, so this is a kind of archetype.
Finally, it is presumed that Beombu’s Eastern Studies was influenced by and exchanged with the figures, for example Shin Chae-ho, Choi Nam-seon, etc.; thus it is necessary to conduct a comparative study in relation to their view of history and human geography. Beombu’s Eastern Studies, as a new Korean studies, is newly illuminated and has the justification to be discussed, from the fields of Oriental medicine, architecture, Korean language, and Korean music, including Eastern and Western philosophy.
