뱀파이어 영화의 여성 캐릭터 이미지 특성 연구 : 에리히 노이만의 여성성 논의를 중심으로 (A Study on the Characteristics of Female Characters in Vampire Movies: Focusing on Erich Neumann's Discussion of Femininity)

초록

상상력은 죽음과 마주할 때 생겨나고, 죽음에 저항하고 죽음을 길들일 수 있는 무기이다. 호러는 죽음의 표상인 괴물 등과 마주해야 한다는 점에서 상상력의 특 성이 잘 나타나는 장르다. 그중에서 뱀파이어라는 소재는 폴리도리의 소설 뱀파 이어 이후 각종 콘텐츠를 통해 죽음을 표상하는 괴물로 등장했다, 최근에는 호 러 장로 속 괴물의 이미지에서 벗어나 기타 장르와 섞이며 다양한 모습으로 나타 나고 있었다. 특히 가부장제의 등장 이후 신화와 콘텐츠 등에 등장하는 많은 괴 물이 여성의 이미지를 하고 있었다. 여성성이라는 코드는 뱀파이어 콘텐츠의 상 상력을 연구할 수 있는 단초라고 판단하여 이러한 뱀파이어 영화 속 여성의 이미 지가 어떻게 형상화되는지 연구하였다.
이를 위해 분석심리학자인 에리히 노이만의 연구를 이론적 틀로 활용하였다. 노이만은 여성성을 감싸고 고수하려는 기초적 성격과 정신의 역동적인 움직임의 변환적 성격으로 분류하였다. 이 여성성은 다시 선한 어머니, 긍정적 아니마, 공 포의 어머니, 부정적 아니마로 세분된다. 이들은 제각기 ‘어머니’, ‘성처녀’, ‘늙은 마녀’, ‘젊은 마녀’의 원형적 이미지를 가지고 있다. 하지만 본고는 노이만의 논의 를 그대로 적용하기에는 한계가 있다고 판단하고 ‘성모’, ‘잔 다르크’, ‘거미’, ‘마 녀’로 변용하였다. 기존의 에리히 노이만의 연구는 심리학을 기반으로 신화, 예술 등 문명 전반을 다루고 있지만 본 연구의 대상은 뱀파이어 콘텐츠이기 때문이다. 이분법적 세계에서 죽음의 괴물이자 불로와 영생을 하는 유혹자이기도 한 뱀파 이어를 분석하기 위한 보다 적합한 원형적 이미지라고 판단하였다.
‘성모’의 원형적 이미지를 가진 캐릭터는 희생당하고, 주인공 캐릭터를 지지하 거나 구원하는 역할을 하였다. ‘잔 다르크’의 원형적 이미지를 가진 캐릭터는 상 반된 두 개의 가치 사이에서 고뇌하고 선택하였다. ‘성모’ 원형의 이미지가 가부 장제가 주장하는 여성상이라면 ‘잔 다르크’ 원형의 영웅은 신화 속 영웅을 닮았 다. 헌신할 타인을 필요로 하는 ‘성모’의 이미지를 가진 캐릭터에 비해 ‘잔 다르 크’의 이미지를 가진 캐릭터의 선택은 오롯이 본인의 삶을 결정하는 주체적인 면 모를 보여주었다. ‘거미’의 원형적 이미지를 가진 캐릭터는 고전 호러 장르 속 괴물의 이미지를 간직하고 있었다. 그들은 거미-어머니로 거미줄에 들어온 자식들 을 속박하고 습격해서 죽음에 이르도록 했다. ‘마녀’의 원형적 이미지를 가진 캐 릭터는 유혹하고, 속이고, 성적 편력을 가지고 있었다. 이 유형은 종종 섹슈얼리 티적 성격을 가지며 가부장제의 성적 관계를 전복시켰다. ‘거미’와 ‘마녀’의 이미 지를 가진 캐릭터는 결국 사냥의 대상이 된다는 공통점을 가지고 있다. ‘거미’의 캐릭터에 대한 사냥이 죽음을 극복하고자 하는 상상력의 시도인 데 반해 ‘마녀’ 의 캐릭터에 대한 사냥은 가부장제를 존속하고자 하려는 콘텐츠의 시각이 반영 된 결과였다.
본 연구는 다양한 장르 혼용 속에서 다양한 모습으로 나타나는 뱀파이어 영화 속 캐릭터의 공통된 전형성을 도출하였다는 의의가 있으며, 이 전형성은 주체적 으로 변모하는 뱀파이어 캐릭터와 뱀파이어의 이분법적 세계관, 그리고 가부장제 에 대한 상반된 시각의 문화적 함의를 포함하고 있었다. 또한, 본 연구에서 제안 한 ‘성모’, ‘잔 다르크’, ‘거미’, ‘마녀’의 원형적 이미지의 분류는 변형 과정에서 뱀파이어의 특성을 반영하였기에 현 사회가 가지고 있는 여성성에 대한 상반된 시 각과 함께 뱀파이어에 대한 대중의 인식 변화도 포함하여 분석할 수 있다는 장점 이 있었다. 하지만 뱀파이어의 특성을 반영하였기에 뱀파이어 영화 외에 다른 장 르의 영화 속 여성 캐릭터 분석에 활용하기 어렵다는 단점 또한 가지고 있었다.

영어초록

Imagination arises when faced with death, and it is a weapon that can resist and tame death. Horror is a genre in which the characteristics of imagination are well represented, as it involves facing monsters, which are symbols of death. Among them, the vampire has appeared as a monster that symbolizes death through various contents since Polidori's novel “The Vampire.” In recent years, it has emerged in various forms by mixing with other genres, breaking away from the image of monsters in horror genres. In particular, many monsters appearing in myths and contents since the emergence of patriarchy have had female images. It was judged that the code of femininity is a clue to studying the imagination of vampire content, so the image of women in vampire movies was studied to see how it is embodied.
For this purpose, the research of Erich Neumann, a psychoanalyst, was utilized as a theoretical framework. Neumann classified femininity into a basic character that seeks to embrace and conserve femininity and a transformative character of the dynamic movement of the psyche. This femininity is further subdivided into the good mother, positive anima, the fearsome mother, and the negative anima. These have their own archetypal images of ‘Mother’, ‘Virgin’, ‘Old Witch’, and ‘Young Witch’. However, this article judged that there are limitations to applying Neumann’s discussion as it is, and it was transformed into ‘madonna’, ‘Jeanne d’Arc’, ‘Spider’, and ‘Witch’. Erich Neumann’s previous research covers the entire civilization, including psychology, mythology, and art, but the subject of this study is vampire content. It was judged to be a more suitable archetypal image for analyzing vampires, who are both monsters of death in a dichotomous world and seducers of eternal youth.
Characters with the archetypal image of the ‘madonna’ were sacrificed, supported or saved the main character. Characters with the archetypal image of Jeanne d’Arc struggled and chose between two opposing values. If the image of the madonna’ is the female ideal advocated by patriarchy, the hero of the archetype of Jeanne d’Arc resembles the hero in mythology. Unlike characters with the image of the madonna’, who need someone else to devote themselves to, the character with the image of Jeanne d’Arc showed a subjective aspect of determining their own life by making choices. Characters with the archetypal image of the ‘Spider’ retained the image of monsters in classical horror genres. They were spider-mothers who bound and attacked their children who entered the spider web, leading to death. Characters with the archetypal image of the ‘Witch’ were seductive, deceptive, and had a sexual history. This type often has a sexual character and subverts patriarchal sexual relationships. Characters with the image of the ‘Spider’ and the ‘Witch’ have in common that they are eventually hunted. While the hunting of the ‘Spider’ character is an attempt at imagination to overcome death, the hunting of the ‘Witch’ character is a result of the content reflecting the perspective of patriarchy.
The significance of this study is that it derived the common stereotype of vampire movie characters that appear in various forms in the hybridization of various genres, and this stereotype includes the cultural implications of the subjectively transforming vampire character, the dichotomous worldview of the vampire, and the contradictory view of patriarchy. In addition, the classification of archetypal images of ‘madonna’, ‘Jeanne d’Arc’, ‘'Spider’, and ‘Witch’ proposed in this study reflected the characteristics of vampires in the transformation process, so it had the advantage of being able to analyze the changing. However, it also had the disadvantage that it was difficult to use in analyzing female characters in movies other than vampire movies because it reflected the characteristics of vampires.
