초록

Every patriot is respected for his outstanding and self-giving fight for the independence of Korea. Meanwhile, not any patriots were free with the personal emotion, difficulty of private life, loneliness and remorse of being political exile.
For almost three years, Baekha(白下) kept his diary which shows the detailed lives of political exiles, and their agony truthfully.
Baekha showed strong will of independence in his many literary works. He had complicated emotion of hunger, cold, realistic fears of life, and apologies for his family. Through his work, we can understand the patriots more personally. So, along with a characteristic of strong and firm patriot for independence, Beakha can be understood as an aged poet who was carefully watching and self-reflecting life.
Naturally, every literary work is written in the author's most preferred language. The intellectuals of early 20th century are educated in 19th century where they learned Chinese characters mostly as their first written character.
That is why the actively created literary works of early 20th century are in Sino-Korean. Besides, there were no other choice of written character for those who were raised in local Confucian society where Chinese characters were flourishing. Amongst the traditional intellectuals, there were ones who used Chinese characters as formal language, but there were many others who wrote literature with literary sensitivity and awareness of the period.
If a traditional Sino-Korean intellectual who couldn't tolerate the pressure of Japanese imperialism was exiled abroad, we can say that he deeply reflected realistic agony of contemporary in his work. So, the literature of them are worth to be listed 20th century literature history.
