초록

이 글은 최인호의 단편소설 「타인의 방」(1971)과 장편소설 『낯익은 타인들의 도시』(2011)를 비교하여 현대인의 소외와 불안, 기억과 정체성 문제에 대해 접근해 본 것이다. 40년의 시간적 격차를 두고 발표되었던 이 두 작품은 ‘타인’이라는 메타포와 ‘변신’ 모티프를 보여준다는 점에서 유사하다. 여기서 변신 모티프는 소설적 테마의 차원으로까지 기능한다.
「타인의 방」의 ‘그’와 『낯익은 타인들의 도시』의 ‘K’는 주변 사람들뿐만 아니라 가장 낯익은 타인인 아내로부터 소외되어 있다. 그들이 겪는 낯선 공간, 낯선 사람들에대한 심리적 불안은 공포, 두려움, 무력감, 피로, 과격함 등을 낳는다.
한편 두 작품에서 공통적으로 등장하는 것은 비현실적 현실의 상정이다. 「타인의 방」에서 사물화의 양상으로 재현되는 변신 모티프는, 『낯익은 타인들의 도시』에서는 도플갱어와 같은 분신 모티프로 이어진다. 이는 환상적 장치의 심화 및 확장이라고 볼수 있다.
망각 즉 기억의 문제는 한 개인의 자아 발견 즉 정체성의 문제와 맞닿아 있다. 「타인의 방」과 『낯익은 타인들의 도시』두 작품 모두, 부정확한 기억 혹은 망각으로 인해정체성의 혼란에 빠진 주인공이 자신이 누구인가와 같은 존재론적 물음을 끊임없이 던지는 정체성 탐색의 서사다. 따라서 표제에 명시된 ‘타인’이라는 메타포는 정체성의 위기를 겪고 있는 현대인을 환기시키는 설정이라고 볼 수 있다. 소설 속에서 이 위기는 구체적으로 분열된 자아의 위장 전술 즉 변신 및 분신으로써 제한적으로나마 극복된다. 궁극적으로 소설의 모티프이기도 한 ‘변신’ 및 ‘분신’의 테마는 삶과 죽음(부활과 재생 그리고 구원)이라는 소설 일반의 고전적이고 정통적인 주제를 구현해낸다.
결론적으로, 현대소설을 현대인의 존재론적 여건과 그 심리적 특성에 관심을 가지고 현대사회의 제반 문제를 형상화한 장르라고 규정할 때, 이 두 작품은 ‘소외’와 ‘불안’뿐만 아니라 ‘정체성’과 ‘기억’의 문제를 탁월하게 묘파하여 최인호 소설의 한 계보를 이룬다고 볼 수 있다. 그리고 이 계보는 환상문학의 자장 안으로 포섭된다.

영어초록

This writing compares the novelette “A Stranger’s Room (1971)” and the novel “Another Man’s City (2011)” by the Korean author Choi In-ho (1945-2013) and approaches the issue of alienation, anxiety, memory and identity of modern man. The two works, released with an interval of 40 years between them, are similar in that both works showed a metaphor of “the others” and the motif of transformation, while the motif of transformation functions as a theme in the novels.
“He” in “A Stranger’s Room” and “K” in “Another Man’s City” are alienated not only from the people around him but also from the most familiar person, wife. His psychological anxiety in a strange space and from strange people gives birth to terror, fear, helplessness, fatigue and aggression.
On the other hand, politics commonly appearing in the two works implies unrealistic reality. The motif of transformation reproduced as the condition of objectification in “A Stranger’s Room” continues as the motif of another self, like a doppelganger, in the later novel “Another Man’s City.” This can be seen as intensification or extension of a fantastical mechanism.
Oblivion or the issue of memory touches the issue of self-discovery and identity of an individual. Both works are epics in search of identity, in which a hero loses himself in the chaos of identity due to unclear memory or oblivions incessantly asks who he is, or an existential question. Thus, the metaphor clearly stated as “the others” in the title can be said as a preset condition arousing the contemporaries suffering from the crisis of identity.
This crisis in the novel is overcome, though to a limited extent, through a camouflaged self that is specifically split(transformation/another self).
Ultimately “transformation” as the motif and the theme of “another self” in the novels materialize the classic and traditional theme in novels dealing with life and death(resurrection, regeneration and salvation).
Conclusively, if modern novels were defined as a genre that materialized general problems of modern society with interests in existential conditions of the contemporaries and their psychological characteristics, the two works could be considered as important works making up the genealogy of Choi In-ho novels, for they excellently described the issue of “identity”, “alienation", “anxiety" and “memory.” And, specifically speaking, this genealogy is embraced in the magnetic field of fantasy literature.
