초록

이태준의 단편소설집 『복덕방』은 1941년에는 일본의 모던일본사에서, 1955년에는 일본의 동방사에서 일본어로 번역되었다. 동방사에서는 모던일본사판 『복덕방』에 김달수의 해설을 덧붙여 재출간한다. 이 글은 모던일본사와 동방사가 각각 전시와 전후에 각각 어떠한 방식으로 이태준의 소설을 다시 만들어냈으며, 이러한 번역출판 작업에 의해 이태준이 어떻게 표상되는지 살펴보았다.
전시에는 이태준의 소설을 비롯하여 여러 편의 조선소설이 일본어로 번역되었다. 이러한 번역출판은 내선일체 정책에 순응하여 이루어진 시국영합적인 행위라는 인식이 일반적이다. 그러나 실제 번역물의 출판양상과 출판과정을 살펴보면, 제국주의의 정치적 논리가 실제 출판 상황을 완전히 장악하지 못한 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 전시기 번역은 주로 정치적인 상황에 영합한 일시적이고 이례적인 현상으로 간주되어 왔지만, 전후에 동방사판 『복덕방』이 출판되었다는 사실은 전시기의 번역출판물이 전후에까지 지속적인 영향을 끼쳤다는 것을 보여준다. 이러한 문제의식 하에 본 연구에서는 번역의 예측불가능성과 전시/전후 번역의 연속성에 주목하여 모던일본사판 『복덕방』과 동방사판 『복덕방』을 분석해보았다.
우선 모던일본사판에는 이국화 번역과 자국화 번역이 혼재되어 나타난다. 번역자는 일본어로 번역불가능한 조선어를 후리가나․ 가타카나 등으로 표현하거나, 괄호 안에 설명을 기입했다. 이러한 번역불가능한 잔여태는 조선어와 일본어의 차이를 가시화한다. 그러나 한편으로 모던일본사판에서는 이태준의 유려한 어휘가 생략되는 경우가 많았으며, 등장인물의 성격이나 소설의 분위기를 표현하는 장치인 고사성어가 충실히 번역되지 않았다. 전시기 일본에서 이태준은 문장미의 작가로 소개되었으나, 실제의 번역은 이태준의 문장의 개성을 충분히 살리는 방향으로 이루어지지 못했다.
1955년에 출판된 동방사판은 모던일본사판을 재출간한 것이지만 일부가 수정되었다. 동방사는 반제국주의적인 입장에서 식민지 시대의 상흔이 아로새겨져 있는 ‘내지’라는 차별적인 단어를 ‘일본’이라는 객관적인 나라명으로 대체했다. 또한 동방 사판에는 김달수의 해설이 수록되어 있다. 김달수는 이태준의 글쓰기를 정치적인 실천의 일환으로 보고, 이태준의 사회주의 문학자로서의 활동을 지지하는 입장을 해설에서 드러낸다. 김달수의 해설에는 사회주의를 지지하며 통일조선을 염원하던 김달수 자신의 정치적 입장이 반영되어 있다.
이처럼 이태준은 출판미디어를 둘러싼 역사적·정치적 상황과 출판주체의 성향에 따라 전시와 전후에 각각 다르게 표상되었다. 전시기 이태준에 관한 소개글들은 이태준을 정치적인 사상이나 정치적인 실천과는 무관한 작가로서 표상했다. 그러나 김달수는 이태준을 반제국주의적이고 사회주의적인 작가로서 재표상했다. 모던일본사의 조선소설 번역출판 작업은 문학에서의 내선일체를 달성하기 위해 기획되었지만, 동방사에 의해 재출간되면서 전혀 다른 정치적 맥락에 놓이게 된다. 동방사의 재출간 작업은 식민주의 텍스트를 전유하고 재맥락화하는 포스트콜로니얼한 성격을 지닌 것이었다.

영어초록

Modern Nihonsa published the Japanese translation of Yi Tae-jun’s “Bokdeokbang” in 1941. Dongbangsa reprinted a new edition of Modern Nihon’s “Bokdeokbang” In 1955. This paper examined how Yi’s novel was published differently by the two publishers. This paper further examined how Yi was introduced and represented through the two translations.
Many novels from Joseon were translated into Japanese during the war. Such translations are generally known to be projects which conformed to the Naeseon Ilchae policy. The actual publication of translations and its process, however, showed how the political logic of imperialism had not completely overwhelmed the publication market. Although translation projects during wartime were mostly considered to be “temporary,” “exceptional,” and catering to the political situations, the fact that “Bokdeobang” was published by Donbangsa after the war shows that the translations published during wartime continued to influence the books published after the war. This study analyzed the Modern Nihon edition and the Dongbangsa edition with focus on the “unpredictability” of translation and the “continuity” of translation during the war and after the war.
First, this study found signs of foreignization and domestication in the Modern Nihon edition. The translator translated untranslatable Korean words in Furigana or Katakana or added parenthesis with explanations of such vocabulary. Such untranslatable remainders accentuated the difference between Korean and Japanese. On the other hand, the Modern Nihon edition often omitted Yi’s eloquent choices of vocabulary. Moreover, the translation did not faithfully translate the idiomatic expressions in Chinese characters Yi used to portray the personalities of the characters or the mood of the story. Although Yi was introduced to Japan as an author with a beautiful command of language during wartime, the translation of his work failed to deliver the characteristics of Yi’s sentences.
the Dongbangsa edition was a reprint of the Modern Nihon edition but some parts of the translation were revised. Taking an anti-imperialist stance, Dongbangsa replaced the discriminatory word “naeji,” which was a term fraught with scars from the colonial period, to the politically correct country name, “Japan.” The Dongbangsa edition also included an introduction by Kim Dal-su. In his introduction, Kim viewed Yi’s act of writing as a political practice and displayed support for his as a socialist writer. Kim’s introduction reflected his own political stance of supporting socialism and aspiring for a reunified Joseon.
Yi was represented differently by th e time h is translation was publish ed, by the historical and political situations surrounding the publishing scene and by the inclinations of his publishers. Modern Nihon published translated Joseon fiction to accomplish Naesun Ilchae in literature. The Modern Nihon edition, however, came under a completely different political context after its reprinting by Dongbangsa. Dongbangsa’s reprinting of the work was an act of postcolonial writing of appropriating and rewriting a colonial text.
