초록

이 논문은 백석이 번역한 러시아 소설 「자랑」, 「숨박꼭질」을 발굴, 소개하고 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 백석은 1930년대부터 분단 후까지 영문학과 러시아 문학 작품을 번역하였다. 시는 수 백 여편에 이르고 장편도 십 수편에 이른다. 번역가 백석의 면모를 살피는 것은 백석 문학을 조망하는데 필수적인 일이다.
「자랑」은 러시아 작가 알렉싼들 야ᄭᅩ볼렙의 소설을 번역한 것이며, 「숨박꼭질」은 러시아 작가 엘레나 베르만의 소설을 번역한 것으로, 두 소설은 이 논문에서 처음 공개되는 것이다. 「자랑」은 독소 전쟁기의 유전 개발을 다룬 단편으로 소련을 사회주의 모범으로 삼고 소련과의 친선을 문학적으로 형상화할 것을 주문 받은 시기에 번역되었다. 「숨박꼭질」은 2차 세계대전 중 유태인 수용소에서 일어난 일을 소재로 한 짧은 단편이다.
두 작품만으로 백석 문학의 표상으로 삼을 만한 성과를 도출할 수는 없지만 몇몇 사항에서 당시 북한문단의 요구와 백석의 문학적 선택 행위로서의 번역의 의미를 찾아볼 수 있다. 두 작품 모두 2차 세계대전을 배경으로 전쟁 중 후방에서 겪은 일을 다루고 있었다. 당시에 번역된 많은 러시아 작품들이 2차세계대전, 대조국전쟁(독소전쟁)을 배경으로 하였는데 백석이 택한 작품들과 그와 맥락을 같이 한다. 1945년 이후 1950년대 중반까지 북한문단이 몰두한 것과 번역을 통해 달성하고자 했던 목표가 백석의 번역에도 반영되어 있었다는 사실을 확인하게 된다. 이것은 매우 단순하고 당연해 보이지만, 백석이 번역을 통해 창작의 기쁨을 간접적으로 느끼고 대체 창작을 하며 또 다른 시인의 삶을 살았을 것으로 믿고 싶은 연구자들에게 이 문제는 여러 가지 의미로 해석될 수 있다. 백석 번역의 의미와 번역가 백석의 내면은 단순한 가정과 소망으로 밝혀지지 않을 것이다. 많은 시간과 연구가 필요하다. 이 논문이 한 부분을 담당하기를 기대한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to introduce and analyze Baek Seok’s translations of the Russian short stories Boast and Hide and Seek.
From before the Korean War until after the division of the Korean peninsula, Baek devoted himself to the North Korean literary world through the translation of numerous English and Russian literary works.
Considering the massive amount of Baek’s translations in various genres, including hundreds of poems and dozens of novels, it is worthwhile to investigate Baek as a translator before analyzing his literary works.
The Korean versions of Boast (written by Alexander Yakovlev) and Hide and Seek (written by Elena Berman) are introduced in this paper for the first time. Boast is a short story about the development of an oilfield during the German-Soviet War. It was translated at a time when writers and translators were ordered to depict the Soviet Union as the role model of socialism and to project the friendliness of the government. Hide and Seek is a short story which portrays a series of events at the Jewish camps of World War II.
It is difficult to generalize the representative writing accomplishments of Baek simply through the analysis of just two of his translations.
However, the study of Baek’s translations is meaningful in that it implies the literary choices he had to make in the midst of certain demands from the North Korea’s literary world. Both Boast and Hide and Seek include episodes from World War II. Of course, these two are not the only stories which describe the experiences and sentiments of civilians in wartime. World War II and the German-Soviet War (Great Patriotic War) were the common background for most Russian literature released and translated during this time. This is no exception for the stories and poems Baek worked on. However, by analyzing his works, we can easily observe the focus of the North Korean literary world from 1945 to the mid-1950s, and see what it strived to achieve through the translation of Russian stories. Simple as it may seem, this analysis is vital as it provides objective data to researchers who believe that Baek managed to live a life as a poet by indirectly experiencing the pleasure of creation through the translation of others’ works. The true meaning of Baek’s translation works and his inner self as a translator cannot be easily revealed through simple assumptions or desires. Much further research is required in this area.
