‘쪽박’, ‘함박’, ‘대박’의 어원에 대하여 (About the Etymology of ‘쪽박jjyokbak’(small gourd), ‘함박hambak’(big gourd), ‘대박daebak’(large gourd))

초록

본고는 ‘쪽박’, ‘함박’, ‘대박’을 동일 어원의 ‘박’을 포함하는 한 계열체로인식하고, 상호 의미 관계 속에서 그 어원과 변화 과정을 살피는 데 그 목적이 있다.
‘쪽박’은 중세국어 ‘죡박’으로 소급한다. 이는 ‘*죡-[小]’과 ‘박’으로 분석되며, ‘작은 박’과 ‘작은 바가지’라는 두 가지 의미를 갖는다. 그런데 ‘죡박’에서‘작은 박’이라는 의미는 사라지고 ‘작은 바가지’라는 의미만 남게 된다. ‘죡박’ 은 ‘족박’을 거쳐 ‘박’으로 변한다.
‘함박’은 중세국어에서는 ‘*한박’으로 존재한 것으로 추정된다. 이는 ‘한[大]+박’으로 분석되며, ‘큰 박’과 ‘큰 바가지’의 의미를 띤다. ‘*한박’에서 변한‘함박’도 이와 동일한 의미를 갖는다. 그런데 ‘함박’은 근대국어 이후 ‘큰 박’ 이라는 의미를 잃고 ‘큰 바가지’라는 의미만 유지한다. 이어서 ‘함박’은 ‘큰 바가지’에서 ‘통나무 속을 파서 큰 바가지같이 만든 그릇’이라는 특수한 의미로변한다. 이와 같은 의미 변화는 ‘함박’을 ‘함지박’의 준말로 오해하면서 그 의미에 이끌린 데 기인한다. 한편 ‘함박’에는 ‘함박꽃’의 의미도 있다. 이는 ‘함박꽃’에서 ‘꽃’이 생략되면서 생겨난 의미이다. ‘함박’은 합성어의 한 요소로서는 ‘(큰 박처럼) 크고 탐스러운’ 또는 ‘(함박꽃처럼) 굵고 탐스러운’이라는비유적 의미를 띤다.
‘함지’는 중국어 ‘函子’에서 온 말이다. ‘함지박’의 준말로 보기도 하나 이는 잘못이다. ‘함지’를 ‘함지박’의 준말로 오해한 이후 이에 ‘함지박’의 의미가생겨난 것으로 보인다. ‘함지’에 ‘박(바가지)’이 잉여적으로 덧붙은 어형이 ‘함지박’이다. 이로써 ‘함박’, ‘함지’, ‘함지박’이 동의어가 된다.
‘대박(大-)’은 근대국어 문헌에서 발견된다. 이는 ‘한박’의 ‘한’을 한자화하는 과정에서 나온 것으로 보인다. ‘대박(大-)’이 등장하면서 ‘족박’의 대립어는 ‘함박’과 ‘대박(大-)’ 두 단어가 된다. ‘함박’이 의미 변화한 이후 ‘족박’의대립어는 ‘대박(大-)’ 하나가 된다. ‘족박’의 대립어로서의 ‘대박(大-)’은 사전에 올라 있지 않다.

영어초록

This paper considers ‘쪽박jjyokbak’(small gourd), ‘함박hambak’(big gourd), and ‘대박daebak’(large gourd) as a series of names which contain the same word ‘박bak’(gourd) in their origin, therefore, the purpose of this paper is to trace the etymology and the process of form change in the interrelations among them.
The ‘쪽박jjyokbak’(small gourd) goes back to ‘죡박jyokbak’. This word is divided into ‘*죡jyok-[小](small)’ and ‘박bak’(calabash, gourd), and it refers to both ‘작은 박jakeun bak’(small calabash) and ‘작은바가지jakeun bagagi’(small gourd bowl). However, as time goes, the meaning of ‘작은 박jakeun bak’(small calabash) in the ‘죡박jyokbak’ disappeared and the meaning of ‘작은 바가지jakeun bagagi’(small gourd bowl) remains only. The ‘죡박jyokbak’ took a form of ‘박sjokbak’ because of word-initial tensification after the 20th century.
The ‘함박hambak’(big gourd) is assumed to be as ‘*한박hanbak’ in the middle Korean. This word is divided into ‘한han[大](big)+박bak(gourd)’, and it represents ‘큰 박keun bak’(big calabash) or ‘큰 바가지keun bagagi’(big gourd bowl). The ‘함박hambak’(big gourd), the changed word form from ‘*한박hanbak’, had the same meaning with its former form. But, the ‘함박hambak’(big gourd) had lost its meaning as ‘큰 박keun bak’(big calabash) after the modern Korean, and only one meaning of ‘큰 바가지keun bagagi’(big gourd bowl) remains now. Also, the ‘함박hambak’(big gourd) underwent the change of meaning from ‘큰 바가지keun bagagi’(big gourd bowl) into the ‘large wooden gourd bowl’. The cause of this phenomenon is attributed to the ‘함박hambak’(big gourd), which is regarded as a shortened word form of ‘함지박hamjibak’(wooden bowl), that the meaning of the word makes an effect on the meaning change. However, the word ‘함박hambak’ represents another object, ‘함박꽃hambakkkoch’(flower of peony). The meaning was newly-made as the ‘꽃kkoch’(flower) in ‘함박꽃hambakkkoch’(flower of peony) has been omitted. The ‘함박hambak’, as one component of the compound word ‘함박꽃hambakkkoch’, means ‘big and bulky (like a big calabash)’ or ‘thick and huge (like a flower of peony)’ in a figurative expression.
The ‘함지hamji’(large scooped wooden bowl) came from ‘函子’, a word written in Chinese characters. There is an assumption that the word is a shortened word from ‘함지박hamjibak’(wooden bowl), but this explanation is wrong. It seems that the meaning of ‘함지박hamjibak’ (wooden bowl) was created when the ‘함지hamji’(large scooped wooden bowl) was misunderstood as a shortened form of ‘함지박hamjibak’ (wooden bowl). When the ‘박bak(바가지bagaji) (gourd)’ is added to the ‘함지hamji’(large scooped wooden bowl) as a redundant word, it became ‘함지박hamjibak’(wooden bowl). Therefor, all three ‘함박hambak’(big gourd), ‘함지hamji’(large scooped wooden bowl), and ‘함지박hamjibak’(wooden bowl) are synonyms.
The ‘대박daebak(大-)(large gourd)’ can be found in the modern Korean literature. The word was made when the ‘한’ in ‘한박hanbak’ underwent the process of writing in Chinese characters. When ‘대박daebak(大-)’(large gourd) appeared, the opposition word of ‘족박jokbak’(small gourd) was either ‘함박hambak’(big gourd) or ‘대박daebak(大-)’(large gourd). Since then, the ‘함박hambak’(big gourd) refers to the ‘the calabash-shaped container made by carving the wood)’ instead of ‘large gourd bowl’, and the opposition word of ‘족박jokbak’(small gourd) is ‘대박daebak’(large gourd) only. The ‘대박daebak(大-)’(large gourd), as an opposition of ‘족박jokbak’(small gourd), has not been made an entry on most Korean dictionaries.
