조선후기 미인도와 일본 에도시대(江戶時代, 1603-1867) 우키요에 미인화와의 관계성 고찰 (A Study on the Effects of illustrations in popular literature of China’s Ming and Qing Dynasties on beauty paintings of the late Joseon Dynasty)

초록

조선후기 미인도는 동아시아 미인도의 유행이라는 조류 속에서 성립되었다. 풍속화와 기록화에서 등장했던 기녀들이 점차 그 역할과 비중이 커지다가 결국 단독 제재로 발전하게 되고, 무배경에 기녀 한 사람을 초상기법으로 나타낸 신윤복의 <미인도>가 등장하면서 한국적인 미인도의 전형이 나타나게 된다. 동아시아 회화의 관계성 측면에서 조선후기 미인도는 중국 사녀화, 소설이나 희곡 등의 통속문학 삽화 및 화보류, 일본 에도시대 우키요에 미인화 등의 다소간의 영향을 받았다. 특히 중국 문학 독자의 증가와 함께 이루어진 소설 삽화의 대중적 파급은 문인, 화원이나 여항화가들만이 아니라 일반 대중에게도 큰 자극을 주었고 조선후기의 회화양식에도 일정한 영향을 미쳤다. 이와 마찬가지로 에도시대의 우키요에도 미인화가 성행했을 뿐만 아니라 대량생산이 가능해 조선에 직·간접적으로 유입되어 조선화단에 자극을 주었을 가능성이 있다.
따라서 본 논문은 동아시아 회화의 관계성 측면에서 조선후기 미인풍속화, 미인도를 에도시대 우키요에 미인화와 비교·고찰해 보면서, 조선후기 미인도의 성립 배경에 대해 규명해 보았다. 조선후기 미인풍속화는 유흥문화와 남녀의 애정행각 등의 소재와 장면구성, 인물배치와 자세, 시선처리 등에서 에도시대 우키요에는 물론 명·청 통속문학 삽화와도 유사점을 찾을 수 있었다. 또한 조선후기 미인도는 단독 미인도로 이행되는 과정이나 ‘무배경의 단독 여인입상’ 형식, 인물의 자세와 세부표현 등에서 우키요에 미인화와 공통적인 요소를 보였다. 이런 점에서 조선후기 미인도는 중국 명·청 통속문학 삽화와 더불어 일본의 우키요에 미인화에 자극을 받았을 것으로 생각된다.
한편, 동시대의 이상적인 미인을 몰개성으로 표현한 동시대 동아시아 미인도와는 다르게, 실물처럼 보이는 이미지 즉 실제 모델이 있는 초상화적인 성격으로 신윤복의 <미인도>가 그려진 이유는 사실성을 추구하는 한국 초상화의 전통과 18세기 조선화단의 영향이 있었다.
이와 같이, 조선후기 미인도는 당대 동아시아 화단과 교류 속에서 동아시아의 미인도의 보편적 요소를 수용하면서도, 조선시대 사실적인 초상기법의 전통과 18세기 초상화단의 영향으로 그것과 구별되는 독자적인 양식을 확립하여 인물화의 한 장르로서 미인도를 완성시켰다.

영어초록

Beauty painting of the late Joseon Dynasty developed gisaeng, whose role and significance had gradually been increasing in genre painting and documentary painting within the current of East Asian trends, into an independent topic. As well, beauty painting developed its own Korean style when Shin Yun-bok’s Portrait of a Beauty presented a gisaeng in portraiture with no background. From the perspective of relationship among East Asian paintings, beauty painting of the late Joseon Dynasty was more or less impacted by Chinese painting of women, illustrations in popular literature such as novels and plays, and art books, as well as Ukiyo-e beauty painting of Japan's Edo Period. Particularly, not only was the beauty painting prevalent during Ukiyo-e of the Edo Period, mass production was also available, leading to conjecture that its inflow to Joseon could have stimulated the writers, court artists and middle-class artists’ conception of painting and their works. Having both direct and indirect effects on the Joseon Dynasty’s painting, this seems to have played a significant role in transitioning from the late Joseon Dynasty’s genre painting to the independent beauty painting.
Hence, this paper attempts to examine the background of how beauty painting of the late Joseon Dynasty was established while comparing and studying genre painting of beauties and beauty painting of the late Joseon Dynasty with Ukiyo-e beauty painting of Edo Period from the perspective of relationship among East Asian paintings. Genre painting of beauties of the late Joseon Dynasty bears similarities to not only Ukiyo-e illustrations of Edo Period, but also those in popular literature of China’s Ming and Qing Dynasties in topics of merrymaking culture and affectionate actions between men and women, spatial compositions, positioning and poses of the figures and how and where their eyes are fixed. As well, beauty painting of the late Joseon Dynasty displays common elements with Ukiyo-e beauty painting in terms of the process of transitioning to the independent beauty painting, the form of ‘a lone woman standing without a background’, poses and expressions of the figures, etc. Based on these, this paper surmises that beauty painting of the late Joseon Dynasty was influenced by Ukiyo-e beauty painting of Japan, as well as illustrations in popular literature of China’s Ming and Qing Dynasties.
