한국미의 고유성 규명을 위한 비교미학적 고찰 (A study in comparative aesthetics for an investigation into the peculiarities of Korean beauty)

초록

이 연구는 그간 한국미 연구를 통해 가장 중요하게 거론된 미적 관점들을 서양미학의 중심내용과 비교해 보면서 한국미의 고유성을 도출하였다. 이러한 연구를 통하여 한국인들이 지향했던 자연관, 세계관과 이를 기반으로 한 고유한 미의식을 더 분명하게 부각시키고자 했다.
이를 위해 한국미의 범주체계를 새롭게 구성해 보고자 했다. 서양미학에서 거론되는 대표적인 미적 범주는 ‘미’, ‘비장’, ‘골계’, ‘숭고’, ‘우아’, ‘추’, 그 밖에 ‘특성미’ 등이다. 한국미의 중심 개념 중에서 ‘한(恨)’과 ‘해학’은 ‘비장’과 ‘골계’에 유사하게 대응하나 그 밖의 개념들은 서양미학의 범주로는 포괄이 안되는 독특한 미적 가치를 지닌다. 그것이 ‘멋’, ‘무심’, ‘일탈’, ‘신명’, ‘풍류’, ‘고졸’, ‘씻김’ 등이다. 이러한 한국미의 범주들은 중심에 자연을 두고 수직적인 방향과 수평적인 방향으로 순환하며 전체는 ‘구(球)’형과 같은 3차원의 체계를 이루고 있다. 이에 비해 서양미학의 범주구조에서 가장 많이 거론되는 데스와의 원환적 범주체계는 서로 성격이 다른 범주들이 마주보고 있는 평면적인 도식을 이루고 있다. 또 그의 범주체계에서 서로 마주보고 있는 범주들의 중심지대는 자연보다는 인간에 중점이 놓이는데 비해 한국미의 모든 범주들을 포괄하는 바탕은 자연이다.
한국미의 중심 범주들은 인간이 갖고 있는 모든 정서적 세계의 소우주속에서 위치하고 유동한다. 이 소우주는 수직계로 순환하는 원환과 수평계로 순환하는 원환으로 나뉜다. 또 각각의 원환은 정서의 밝은 쪽과 어두운 쪽으로 나뉘는데, 중심에 생명력으로서의 자연을 품고 있기 때문에 그 생명력의 힘으로 어두운 쪽에서 밝은 쪽으로 이행하고자 하는 운동성을 가진다. 수직계 순환범주로는 ‘한’, ‘해학’, ‘흥’, ‘신명’, ‘씻김’ 등이 있고 수평계 순환범주는 ‘풍류’, ‘멋’, ‘일탈’, ‘고졸’, ‘무심’ 등이 있다. 수직계 순환범주는 음악이나 연극, 문학 등 시간예술에서 주로 많이 나타나는데, 시간의 순차적 배열에 따라 정서가 운동하며 인간의 성정을 강하게 자극한다. 수평계 순환범주는 조형예술에서 주로 나타나며, 평온한 정서로 표현되면서도 유동적인 자연의 생명력을 담는다. 조형예술은 공간과 정지된 시간성 속에 모든 것을 담아야 하므로 극단적인 정서가 중화되고 대립과 모순이 화해된 자연 그대로의 상태를 표현하게 된다. 그러므로 조형예술은 자연성을 바탕으로한 관조적 미감이 지배적이다. 수직계 순환범주는 인간과 사회의 관계 속에서 발현되는 정서의 성격이 강하며 수평계 순환범주는 그 미적 특성이 자연 쪽에 더 가깝다. 이 전체 범주는 하나의 총체성의 체계 속에서 유동하기 때문에 다른 범주들과의 영역이 명확히 분리되는 것은 아니나 각각의 중심위치의 성격은 뚜렷이 지닌다.
이를 통해 도출된 한국미의 고유성은 범주들이 상호통섭하면서 복합적인 미의식으로 나타난다는 것이다. 그럼으로써 미의식은 삶의 총체성을 더 깊이 있게 보여줄 수 있게 된다. 이렇게 미적 범주는 순환하며 모든 정서를 총체성 속에 녹여내며, 슬픈 것과 기쁜 것, 속된 것과 성스러운 것, 일상적인 것과 초월적인 것, 아름다움과 추함, 늙음과 젊음 등은 함께 교호하거나 결합하여 전체의 미를 볼 수 있는 심미적 차원을 깊게 한다. 이러한 통일된 미의식은 정합적인 차원에서 닫혀있는 것이 아니라 순환적으로 움직이는 미의식이다.

영어초록

This research derived the peculiarities of Korean beauty by comparing the significant components of Korean aesthetics with those of Western aesthetics. In doing so, I tried to emphasize the standpoint to the nature, to the world and aesthetic consciousness of Korea.
This aim required the establishment of a new set of Korean aesthetic categories. The representative aesthetic categories of Western aesthetics are Beauty, Tragic, Comic, Sublimity, Grace, Ugliness, and Characteristics. The Korean aesthetic categories Han and Humor are similar to Tragic and Comic, but the following Korean categories have no Western counterpart: Mut, Indifference, Deviation, Shinmung, Pungryu, and Shikim. The categories of Korean aesthetics circulate in both the vertical direction and the horizontal direction. Together they form a three-dimensional spherical system. In contrast, the circular categorical system of Dessoir forms a two-dimensional plane in which certain categories oppose each other. In his categorical system, the central point between opposing characteristics accentuates humanity, whereas the basis of the Korean aesthetic categories is nature.
The central categories of Korean beauty exist and move in the microcosmos of the human emotional world. The microcosmos is divided into vertical and horizontal circular categories. Each of these circles is then divided into bright and dark aspects of emotion. The latter moves toward the bright aspect from the dark aspect, embracing nature as a vital power. Han, Humor, Heung, Shinmung, and Shikim are the vertical categories. Pungryu, Mut, Deviation, Archaic, and Indifference are horizontal circular categories. The vertical categories appear often in art that is based on tempo, stimulating human nature by moving emotion by the passage of time. The horizontal circular categories mainly in the formative arts, holding the floating life force of nature, are expressed by tranquil emotion. The formative arts have to embody every motive in space and the stopping moment, so they express the state of nature itself, in which extreme emotions are neutralized, and conflict and contradiction are reconciled. So in the formative arts, the contemplative sense of beauty is dominant, based on naturalness. The vertical circular categories are characterized by the emotion that arises in the relationship between individuals and society. The aesthetic characteristics of the horizontal circular categories are nearer to nature. No individual category can be divided clearly into a specific categorical domain, by reason of floating in a system of totality, but they distinctly reflect the character of their main position.
To conclude, the peculiarity of Korean beauty appears as a complex aesthetic consciousness through the mutual interchange of categories. Therefore, the aesthetic consciousness deeply reflects the totality of life. In this way, the aesthetic categories circulate and melt the individual emotions into totality. Sadness and pleasure, worldliness and the divine, daily life and transcendence, beauty and ugliness; they all alternate each other together, and deepen the aesthetic dimension to reveal beauty as a whole. This unified aesthetic consciousness is circular and moving, not enclosed in a fixed system.
