한국문학연구와 문화의 미결정성의 공간 (Study of Korean Literature and Space of Cultural Undecidability)

초록

이 논문은 한국문학연구에서 흔히 부딪히는 서구적 이론과 한국문학 텍스트 간의 괴리의 문제를 ‘문화의 미결정성의 공간’(space of cultural undecidability)을 통해 해결하려 모색했다. 문화의 미결정성의 공간이란 지배권력에 의해 고착된 교의적 담론이나 제도들이 이질적 담론이나 힘들에 부딪히면서 양가적으로 열려지는 수행적 공간이다. 서구적 제도․담론과 한국의 문화 사이에 작용하는 권력관계가 문화적 식민주의라면, 문화의 미결정성의 공간은 문화적 탈식민으로 나아가는 방향을 암시하는 영역이다. 문화의 미결정성의 공간은 서구적 담론을 부정하는 것이 아니라 그 담론들과 교섭을 해야 나타난다. 이 미결정적 공간은 그런 교섭을 통해 서구적 담론과 한국적 텍스트를 탈식민적으로 연결해 준다. 따라서 문학이론에서 서구중심주의에서 벗어나려면 서구 이론을 부정(negation)하는 대신 교섭(negotiation)을 벌이며 그 틈새에서 우리 자신의 담론을 찾아야 한다. 마찬가지로 식민권력에서 벗어나려면 식민주의를 삭제하는 대신 교섭을 통해 그 상처를 껴안고 넘어서야 한다. 우리는 이 과정이 루쉰이 「고향」에서 말한 절망을 끌어안고 넘어서며 ‘길 없는 길’을 통해 저항으로 나아가는 과정과 유사함을 논의했다.
문화의 ‘미결정성의 공간’과 ‘길 없는 길’은 우상 같은 희망이나 이데올로기 대신 수행적 공간에서 발견한 비식별성의 영역이 해방된 삶으로 나아가는 출발점임을 말해준다. 그 비식별성의 영역에서 열려진 문화의 공간을 은유와 가상공간을 통해 표현해주는 것이 바로 문학일 것이다. 그러나 그런 미시적 문화의 공간이 열려지려면 거시적 담론들과의 교섭이 필수적이다. 따라서 그런 미시-거시 담론들의 교섭의 관계를 탐색하며 문화의 미결정성의 공간의 지도를 그려주는 것이 문화연구와 문학연구일 것이다.
이 논문에서는 (문학에서 표현된) 문화의 공간의 미시적 동요가 거시적 담론에 연결되는 과정을 손창섭의 소설들을 통해 살펴봤다. 손창섭의 소설들은 문화의 공간에서의 감성적 동요의 변화를 통해, 반공적 국가주의의 사회체제에서 어떻게 4.19로 나아가는 움직임이 나타나는지 보여준다. 이 논문은 또한 트랜스내셔널한 거시적 맥락에서 생긴 사회적 현상들이 어떻게 미시적 동요를 생성시키는지 식민지 시대 문학을 예로 살펴보았다. 예컨대 트랜스내서널한 식민지 권력은 수많은 유민들을 발생시켜 그들을 사지로 내모는 죽음정치를 보여준다. 흩어진 유민들은 낯선 두려움(unhomely) 속에서 고통스럽게 떠돌면서 무력한 삶을 살아갈 뿐이다. 그러나 그들의 낯선 두려움에 공감하는 사람들의 물밑의 연대가 생성되며 문화의 미결정성의 공간의 동요가 시작된다. 가령 현진건의 「고향」이나 김소월 「바라건대는 우리에게 우리의 보습대일 땅이 있었더면」은 그런 미결정적 동요를 암시한다. 이 논문은 민족이나 민중의 기표에 의해 호명되기 전에 문화적 미결정성의 공간에서의 은밀한 연대가 고조될 때 저항이 시작됨을 보여주려 했다. 이런 비식별성의 영역에서의 움직임은 ‘길 없는 길’이 생성되는 과정과 다르지 않다. 그 과정에서 은밀한 미결정성의 영역(길 없는 길)을 은유와 가상공간으로 표현하는 것이 문학이며, 그런 잘 보이지 않는 공간을 미시-거시 담론들의 지도로 그려주는 것이 문학연구일 것이다.

영어초록

This Thesis attempted to solve the problem of Western theories and Korean literary texts through the concept of space of cultural undecidability. Cultural undecidability is an perfomative space in which pedagogy discourse and policies fixed by the dominant authority open ambivalently as they run into heterogeneous discourse and powers. If the power relationship between the Western policy discourse and the Korean culture is akin to colonialism, the space of cultural undecidability is one that implies the direction towards cultural postcolonization. The space of cultural undecidability can only rise when negotiations with Western discussions take place, not when they are negated. Such undecidable space connect Western discourse and Korean texts in a postcolonial manner. As such, in order for literary theories to escape Western-centric ideas, we must search for our down discussion by negotiating, rather than negating, Western theories. in the same way, in order to escape from colonial powers, we must find embrace our scars rather than deleting colonialism. We discuss the fact that this process is similar to the way in which the main character goes into resistance through the "road without roads" in Lu Xun's "Hometown" The space of cultural undecidability and "road without roads" tell us that the area of unidentifiability discovered in the executive space, rather than the idol-like hope or ideology, is the starting point of the journey to a liberating life. Literature is the expression of that cultural space in the unidentifiability through metaphor and virtual space, but in order for such microcosmic cultural space to open, negotiation with macrocosmic discussions is necessary. As such, the exploration of negotiating relationship between micro-macro discourse that map the space of cultural undecidability is cultural studies and the study of literature.
This Thesis looked into the process of microcosmic affect of cultural space (expressed in literature) linking to the macrocosmic discussion in Sohn Chang-seop's novels. The works show how an anti-commusist and nationalistic social system evolve into a society that gave birth to the April 19 movement, via emotional changes in the cultural space. The current study also takes the example of Korean novels during Japanese occupation to look at how macrocosmic social phenomena generate microcosmic changes. For example, transnational colonial powers give birth to numerous people of diaspora that lead them to die in a starnge lange. Such displaced peoples live powerless lives, painfully drifting through a strage unhomeliness. However, the change in the space of cultural undecidability begins as an underground solidarity of people who sympathize with such strange fear arises. For example, Hyun Jin-geon's "hometown" or Kim Sowol's "I wish for a land for us to plow" imply such undecidable changes. The current study attempted to show that resistance begins when a covert solidarity forms and heightens before that resistance is overtly called on by the signifiers of the nation or the people. Such movements in the area of unidentifiability is not very different from the process in which "road without roads" is generated. Literature is what expresses that covert area of undecidability (road without roads) through metaphor and virtual spaces, and the study of literature is what maps that shadowy space through micro-macro discourse.
