미청구공사가 주가에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of the Unbilled Revenue on the Stock Prices)

초록

본 연구는 진행기준에 따라 재무제표를 작성하는 건설, 조선 등 수주산업의 재무제표에 등장하는 미청구공사 계정금액이 주가에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 미청구공사 계정금액은 시공회사의 재무제표에는 자산으로 인식되어 있으나 아직 현금이 들어오지 않은 미수채권으로 추후 상당부분이 손실로 처리될 가능성이 높은 위험자산으로 인식되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구를통해 재무제표 이용자들이 미청구공사계정의 자산성을 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 분석하였다.
분석결과, 첫째, 재무제표 이용자들이 미청구공사계정의 자산성을 인정하고 있음을 확인하였다. 추가분석으로 실시한 주식수익률 모형을 이용한 분석에서도 재무제표 이용자들이 미청구공사의 자산성을 인식하고 있음을 보여주었다. 둘째, 미청구공사 계정금액이 포함된 IFRS 도입 이전의 매출채권과 IFRS 도입 이후 미청구공사 계정금액이 제외된 매출채권이 주가에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과, IFRS 도입 이후 미청구공사 계정금액이 제외된 매출채권의 주가관련성이 더 크다는 사실을 발견하여, 재무제표 이용자들이 미청구공사계정의 자산성을 인정하지만 현금회수의 불확실성에 대해서도 충분히 인식하고 있음을 확인하였다. 또 IFRS 도입 이후 미청구공사와 매출채권이 주가에 미치는 영향에 차이가 있는지를 확인하기 위한 표준화회귀계수 비교에서도 매출채권계정의 영향이 더 큰 것을 확인하였다.

영어초록

Since the introduction of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in 2011, unbilled revenue account has appeared as an asset on financial statements of order-based production industries such as construction and shipbuilding firms, which prepare financial statements based on the percentage-of-completion method. This unbilled revenue account is an uncollected receivable which has not yet been billed to the client.
Recently, the so called ‘Phenomenon of an Accounting Cliff' in the construction and shipbuilding industries occurs repeatedly. This phenomenon refers to the problem where the amount in the unbilled revenue account continues to increase but suddenly faces a loss at a particular point of time. This results in increased distrust towards the accounting information of the firms mentioned above, and deteriorated investor protection.
However, studies have not been conducted on how users of financial statements perceive unbilled revenue. Thus, this study focuses on user perception of financial statements regarding the quality of unbilled revenue, namely known as an asset with uncertain collectivity in construction and shipbuilding industries. This study also analyzes the level of influence of trade receivable before the introduction of IFRS which included the amount of the unbilled revenue, and trade receivable after the introduction of IFRS which excluded the amount of the unbilled revenue on stock prices.
The results of this study are as follows. First, the study finds that majority of investors perceive unbilled revenue as an asset rather than an asset with uncertainty to be collected.
Through the analysis with the return model to confirm the robustness of the result. the study shows that users of financial statements recognize the nature of the unbilled revenue as an asset. Second, after analyzing the influences of the trade receivable before the introduction of IFRS, and after the introduction of IFRS, the study finds that the effect of the latter on the stock prices is bigger than that of the former.
