초록

본고는 한국문화예술위원회 예술기록원에서 생산한 연극배우 김동원의 구술채록문과 관련 구술증언 기록을 대상으로 한국의 근현대 배우 연구의 방법을 고찰하는 시론이다. 배우 구술채록문과 관련 구술증언은 자료부재의 빈틈을 메우고 배우의 생애를 중심으로 연기행위의 맥락, 공연상황, 배우 및 배우집단의 내면의식, 사회적 관계를 파악하는 데 유용한 텍스트이다. 또한 해석의 과정에서 ‘자기이해’를 중심으로 생산된 에고다큐먼트이자 상황과 기억의 산물인 구술채록문으로서의 특성에 주의해야 한다. 같은 에고다큐먼트라 할지라도 편집을 통해 최종적으로 완성되는 자서전과는 달리 기억 및 면담상황에 관련되어 있는 구술채록문 안에는 해석이 필요한 모종의 ‘흔적’이 남게 된다.
2장에서는 김동원의 구술채록문과 자서전의 교차분석을 통해 영화체험의 양상이 세 종류의 에고다큐먼트에서 어떻게 다르게 나타나는지를 분석하였다. 사실관계가 동일한 에고다큐먼트라 하더라도, 기억을 회고하는 과정에서 진술 당시의 자기이해에 따라 서사의 양상이 바뀌기에 구술채록문은 구술맥락과 면담상황을 고려하며 여타 문헌과 교차검토를 통해 해석해야 하는 대상이다. 3장에서는 반복을 통한 강조, 구술의 패턴화 경향을 분석하였다. 반복과 패턴화된 서사는 배우 구술채록문에서 심급의 경험 및 연기론과 이어진 것으로, 김동원의 경우 목소리와 발성-내면연기 사이의 딜레마 상황과 연기변신의 맥락이 드러나 있다. 4장에서는 구술채록문의 모호한 답변과 구술증언 및 관련자료의 종합을 통한 상황의 재구성 방법을 시도하였다. 채록문에 나타난 ‘자기이해’는 개인이 속한 배우집단의 관점을 드러내는 자료로도 다루어질 필요가 있으며, 상황의 재구는 ‘자기서사’의 구조에 숨겨진 맥락을 해석하는 방식으로 적극 활용될 수 있다. 김동원 구술채록문에서는 김동원/극단 신협과 유치진/드라마센터의 갈등관계와 드라마센터 개관작 <햄릿>(1962)을 둘러싼 극단 신협의 연극계 변화에 대한 인식과 세대교체의 징후에 주목하였다. 배우 구술채록문은 사실관계에 대한 경험적 진술로서의 가치뿐 아니라, 그 자체가 의미를 해석적으로 규명해야 하는 배우 연구의 자료로 다루어져야 한다.

영어초록

This paper examined the research methods of modern Korean actors by focusing on the oral records and relevant oral statements of the stage actor Dong-won Kim, which were produced by the Arts Council Korea’s Arts Archive. The oral records and relevant oral statements of an actor are useful texts that can fill in the gaps in the materials and help understand the context of acting, the circumstances surrounding the performance, and the inner consciousness and social relationship of an actor or a group of actors. In interpreting the materials, it is also important to consider the characteristics of the texts, which are ego-documents based on a sense of self-understanding and oral records based on situations and memory. Unlike autobiographies, which are also ego-documents but are completed through an editing process, oral records concern one’s memory and the circumstances of the interview and thus leave a certain “trace” that requires further interpretation.
In Chapter 2, this study cross-analyzed Dong-won Kim’s oral records and autobiography to examine how the aspects of the movie experience differ in the three types of ego-documents. Even if they may be ego-documents with the replacements of the same facts or experiences, oral records had to be interpreted through a cross-examination with other materials in consideration of the oral context and the interview situation, since the aspects of the narrative are subject to change depending on the speaker’s self-understanding during the interview. In Chapter 3, this study analyzed the patterns of emphasis through repetition and the patterning of the oral narrative. Repetition and the narrative patterning were linked to the experiences and the acting methods found in the actor’s oral records. In the case of Dong-won Kim, they revealed his dilemma between his voice and vocalization and internal acting and the significance of his transformation in acting, which was possible through his performance in Death of a Salesman. In Chapter 4, this study attempted to reconstruct the situation of the performances by using the vague answers from the oral records, oral statements, and other relevant materials. The “self-understanding” found in the actor’s oral records should be treated as a material that demonstrates the perspective of a group of actors to which the actor belongs. The reconstruction of the situation of the performance through oral statements could be actively used to interpret the context of the oral records that are hidden within the structure of the “self-narrative.” Dong-won Kim’s oral records revealed the conflicts that existed between Dong-won Kim and his theater company Shinhyeop with Yoo Chijin and his Drama Center, as well as Shinhyeop’s perception of the changes in the theater scene surrounding Hamlet (1962), the opening work of the Drama Center, and the signs of a generational transition. This study found that the oral records of an actor do not only carry the value as an experiential testimony of facts but should be considered as research material for studying actors that require interpretation of the text’s meanings.
