초록

이 글은 한국 근대소설의 발전 과정에서 소설 삽화가 작품 속 인물의 외양 묘사 및 성격 형상화에 미친 영향 관계를 살피고자 한다. 이를 위해 안석주가 삽화를 담당한 신문연재 소설 속 ‘미인(美人)’ 여성 주인공의 재현 양상을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 삽화는 단순히 소설의 내용을 보완하는 그림이 아니다. 소설에서 삽화가 등장함에 따라 소설을 읽는 과정뿐 아니라 쓰는 과정에서도 큰 변화가 나타나게 되었다. 독자들은 삽화가 등장한 이후 소설의 내용과 삽화 이미지를 교차하여 비교하면서 소설을 읽기 시작했고, 작가들은 삽화 못지않게 정교하고 세밀하게 인물과 주변환경을 묘사하고자 노력하게 되었다. 삽화는 소설의 리얼리즘이 형성되는 데도 중요한 역할을 담당했다. 그런 점에서 소설가와 삽화가는 협력적인 관계이면서 동시에 경쟁적인 관계이기도 했다.
미인도(美人圖)는 한 사회의 이상화된 여성을 그린 그림에 가깝다. 그런 점에서 미인은 단순히 한 개인의 취향에 의해 결정되는 것이 아니라, 특정 시기 한 집단의 이상적인 미의식이 반영된 인간상이라 할 수 있다. 신문연재소설의 삽화가 본격적으로 등장하던 시기는 서구의 영향을 받은 새로운 미의식 혹은 미적 기준이 형성되기 시작하던 시기였다. ‘미인’은 언어적 차원과 이미지적 차원의 두 개의 미학 체계를 기반으로 형성된다. 미인을 언어로 설명하게 되면 그 이미지를 머릿속에 구체적으로 떠올리게 되는 것이 쉽지 않고, 미인을 이미지로 표현하면 미인임으로 직관적으로 알 수 있지만, 그것을 언어로 설명하는 것이 쉽지 않다. 그런 점에서 신문연재소설의 삽화 속 ‘미인화’는 구체적이고 일관된 등장인물에 대한 언어적 묘사와 다양한 삽화가 어우러진다는 점에서 중요한 의미가 있다.
삽화 없이 연재된 이광수의 『무정』에서는 영채와 선형 등이 미인으로 설정되었을 뿐 구체적인 외양이 묘사되지 않았지만, 이후의 작품들인 『재생』이나 『흙』등에서는 점차 미인 여성인물들의 외양이 구체적으로 그려지지 시작했다. 1930년대부터 서구적인 기준에 부합하는 한국의 새로운 ‘미’에 대한 논의가 활발하게 이루어졌다. 그렇지만 외래적인 기준을 따른 ‘미’는 실제 현실과 조화를 이루지 못하고 충돌하는 경우가 종종 발생했다. 염상섭의 『광분』은 양장미인을 중심으로 근대와 전근대, 서구와 전통의 충돌과 파국을 다룬 작품이라 할 수 있고, 이광수의 『그 여자의 일생』은 조선과 일본의 미의식이 뒤섞이는 양상을 보여준다. 이상과 박태원 등의 작가들은 소설뿐 아니라 삽화도 직접 담당했던 작가들로 글과 그림이 혼합되어 새로운 의미를 창출하는 ‘화문(畵文)의 모더니즘’의 특성을 보여준다.

This article seeks to examine the influence of illustrations on the characterization of characters in the work during the development of modern Korean novels. We would like to focus on the reproduction of the ‘beauty’ female protagonist in the roman-feuilleton illustrated by Ahn Seok-ju. An illustration is not just a complement to the literary texts. With the advent of illustrations in the novel, there was a big change not only in the process of reading the novel but also in the process of writing it. After the illustration appeared, readers began to read the novel by comparing the contents of the novel and the images of the illustrations, and writers began to try to describe the characters and the surrounding environment as elaborate and detailed as the illustrations. Illustrations also played an important role in the formation of realist novels. In this regard, novelists and illustrators were both cooperative and competitive.
The paintings of beauties is more of a picture of an idealized woman in a society. In this regard, beauty is not simply determined by an individual’s taste, but rather reflects the ideal aesthetic of a group at a certain time. The time when illustrations of the roman-feuilleton appeared in earnest was when new aesthetic or aesthetic standards, influenced by the West, began to form. The beauty is formed based on two aesthetic systems: linguistic and imaging. If you explain beauty in language, it is not easy to think of the image in detail in your head, and if you express beauty as an image, you can intuitively see it as beauty, but it is not easy to explain it in language. In this regard, the ‘beauty’ in the illustrations of the roman-feuilleton is important in that it combines linguistic descriptions of specific and consistent characters and various illustrations.
Lee Kwang-soo’s Mujeong, published without illustrations, did not depict the appearance of the portrait and linearity, but later works such as Jaesaeng and Soil gradually began to depict the appearance of beautiful female characters. Since the 1930s, discussions on Korea’s new ‘beauty’ have been active in meeting Western standards. However, the beauty according to foreign standards often conflicts with actual reality. Yeom Sang-seop’s Kwangboon is a work that deals with the conflicts and catastrophes between the Western and the traditions and Lee Kwang-soo’s The Woman’s Life shows a mixture of Korean and Japanese aesthetic. Writers such as Lee Sang and Park Tae-won are those who were directly in charge of illustrations as well as novels, and show the characteristics of literary-visual modernism.
