메타버스의 문턱에서: 대만 플레이브(Plave) 팬덤의 메타버스에 대한 인식과 수용에 대한 탐색 (At the Threshold of the Metaverse: A Study of Awareness and Adoption in the Taiwanese Plave Fandom)

초록

본 연구는 메타버스와 엔터테인먼트 산업의 교집합으로 생겨난 콘텐츠인, 메타버스 기반의 아이돌 콘텐츠의 해외 수용 양상에 대해 연구했다. 한국 메타버스 아이돌인 플레이브의 팬덤에서 적극적인 활동을 하고 있는 대만인 팬 5명과 인터뷰를 수행한 결과를 토대로, 현상학적 연구 방법을 통해 대만인들의 메타버스 콘텐츠의 수용 양상에 대해 정리했다.
플레이브의 대만 내 팬덤은, K-pop 아이돌이나 애니메이션, 버츄얼 스트리머를 좋아했던 이력이 있는 이들로 구성되었으며, 이들은 플레이브가 기존의 아이돌보다 많은 소통을 하는 것과 멤버들의 강력한 개성에 강점을 느끼고 있었다.
더불어 플레이브가 물리적으로 어느곳에도 존재하지 않기에, 한국 팬들과 동등한 위치에서 플레이브를 좋아할 수 있다는 것에도 만족감을 드러내며, 플레이브가 메타버스 기반의 아이돌이라는 점에서 장점을 찾아냈다.
기존 언론들의 분석과는 달리, 플레이브의 해외 팬들은 플레이브라는 이외에도, 플레이브를 수행하고 있는 플레이브 뒷단의 인물에게 큰 관심과 애정을 가졌다. 이들은 플레이브의 본체를 강하게 인식하고 있었으며, 호감이 가지만 플레이브는 아닌 존재, 플레이브가 좋아질 수록 궁금해지는 존재라고 생각했다. 심지어, 본체 또한 플레이브의 일부이자 팬 활동의 대상이라고 언급하는 이들 또한 존재했다. 사생활 이슈가 존재할 수 없는, 현실과의 간격이 메타버스 기반의 가상 아이돌의 장점으로서 논의되고 있으나, 이들과 현실간에 존재하는 분명한 연결성과 파급력은 결코 무시할 수 없는 수준임을 확인할 수 있었다.
메타버스 형태의 아이돌이라는 점이 가지는 필연적인 단점 또한 언급되었다. 영원히 만나볼 수 없는 존재라는 점이 플레이브를 팬들에게는 여전히 아쉬움을 남기고 있었으며, 실존하는 아이돌과는 달리 변화하지 않는 헤어에 대해서도 팬들은 아쉬움을 느끼고 있었다.

This research explores the reception and engagement of Korean metaverse-based entertainment content, focusing on virtual idols within the Taiwanese fandom context. Through in-depth interviews with five female students and professionals in their 20s, the study investigates the experiences and perceptions of Taiwanese fans toward the Korean virtual idol group Plave. The findings reveal nuanced insights into the fans’ appreciation for Plave’s distinctive communication style and individuality, drawing comparisons with traditional idols. Plave fandoms mainly consist of fans of K-pop idols, animation, and virtual streamers. They are satisfied with Plave and more actively communicate with their fans than other idol groups. Furthermore, they do not physically exist; even Korean fans can’t see them. It also satisfied foreign fans that they could like Korean idols in the same situation as Koreans. Despite the metaverse foundation, fans express a profound connection to the real-world counterparts of Plave, underscoring the emotional impact associated with the idols’ physical presence. The research highlights challenges metaverse idols encounter, including the limitations of in-person interactions and the static nature of appearances. In contrast to prevailing media analyses, this study emphasizes fans’ substantial interest in and affection for both the virtual idol group and the real-world individuals behind Plave. The study underscores the importance of comprehending the intricate dynamics between metaverse-based idols and their real-world counterparts, acknowledging fans’ emotional impact and positive sentiments toward both dimensions. This research provides essential insights into the reception of Korean metaverse content in Taiwan, offering a nuanced understanding of the unique characteristics and challenges metaverse-based idols face in the international entertainment landscape. This study lays the foundation for future research to address the gap in academic research on the overseas reception of metaverse-based content, particularly in Taiwan, offering practical implications for exporting Korean metaverse content to Taiwan.
