절의의 상징과 표현에 대한 연구 -이주환(李柱煥) 순절(殉節) 추도문을 중심으로- (A Study on the Symbol and Expression of Fidelity -Focusing on the eulogy for the martyrdom of Lee Ju-hwan-)

초록

본고는 절의 의식이 정점에 도달했던 국권 침탈기에 순절(殉節)한 의사(義士)를 추모하는 글에 표출된 절의의 상징과 표현의 양상을 고찰한 것이다. 그 전형성은 고종의 사망에 자결(自決)로 절의를 표명한 연호(連湖) 이주환(李柱煥)을 애도하기 위해 지은 만사․제문․애사에서 찾을 수 있다.
‘상징’은 문화와 인식의 결합 양상 및 문학적 수사를 살펴볼 수 있는 유효한 척도인데, 본고는 이주환의 순사에 대한 상징으로서, 가치 있는 죽음의 상징, 자연물 상징, 역사적 인물의 상징으로 대별하였다.
가치 있는 죽음의 가장 일반적인 상징은 ‘곰 발바닥’이다. 또 ‘부서진 옥’도 같은 상징성을 갖는다. 자연 상징물은 송백(松柏), 송죽(松竹), 철석(鐵石) 등이 대표적이다. 그것들은 시련을 견디며 변하지 않는 성상으로 인해 절의의 상징으로 쓰인다. 그것들은 절의를 의미하는 개념과 착종되어 사용된 예가 있는가 하면 단독으로 사용된 예도 있는데, 형태적으로 볼 때 전자의 문학적 상징성이 떨어진다.
역사적 인물로 이주환의 순절을 상징한 것은 당시 지식인의 현실 및 역사 인식을 볼 수 있는 척도이다. 이주환의 순절 요소는 ‘외적의 침입’ㆍ‘왕을 따라 죽음’ㆍ‘자결’이다. 그리고 그 토대가 되는 의식은 항거ㆍ고난ㆍ복수(復讐)이다. 그런데 이주환을 추모하는 글에 사용된 역사적 인물 상징 중에 왕조 교체기의 은자인 백이가 가장 높은 빈도를 보이며, 외침에 항거한 노중련이 그다음 빈도를 보인다. 이는 은거를 절의와 동일시한 당대 의식의 특징을 보여 준다. 길재나 도잠이 상징으로 사용된 것도 같은 맥락에서 설명할 수 있다.
외침(外侵)으로 인해 자결을 택한 왕촉ㆍ전횡ㆍ육수부는 이주환의 순절과 가장 상관도가 높기에 적절한 상징이라고 할 수 있다. 한편 외침으로 피살된 문천상ㆍ이약수나 왕조 교체기에 피살된 정몽주, 정치적 혼란기에 피살된 악비ㆍ비간 등은 이주환과 상관성이 떨어지지만, 충정을 토대로 한 ‘죽음’이라는 점에서 상관성을 갖는다. 반면 예양과 형가는 보은 혹은 복수 행위를 한 협객이나 자객이기에 그러한 인물이 이주환의 순절을 상징한 것은 어떻게 보아야 할지 당혹스럽다. 또 그들은 단독으로 사용되기도 하지만 대부분 2인 이상 조합된 양상을 보인다. 2인 이상의 조합은 주로 대우의 수사법에 기인한 것이지만 상징성을 높이기 위한 의도가 저변에 놓여 있다. 따라서 인명을 직접 드러내기보다는 대칭(代稱)으로 문학적 상징성을 높이고 있다.
‘외적의 침입’ㆍ‘왕을 따라 죽음’ㆍ‘자결’이라는 요소가 일치하는 역사적 인물 간의 조합은 상관도가 매우 높지만, 이러한 예는 많지 않다. 오히려 적절하지 않은 인물 상징의 조합이 다수를 점한다. 이는 관습적 상징 인식에 기인한 현상이다.

영어초록

This paper examines the aspects of symbol and expression of fidelity expressed in writings commemorating the patriotic martyr during the period of national sovereignty invasion when the consciousness of fidelity reached its peak in Korea. Its typicality can be found in the funeral ode, funeral oration, and elegy written to mourn Yeon Ho(連湖) Lee Ju-hwan(李柱煥), who expressed his fidelity by committing suicide upon the death of King Gojong.
‘Symbol’ is a valid measure for examining the aspects of the combination of culture and perception and literary rhetoric. The symbols of Lee Ju-hwan’s death for loyalty were broadly classified into three categories: a symbol of valuable death, a symbol of natural objects, and a symbol of historical figures.
The most common symbol of valuable death is the ‘Bear’s paw’. The ‘Broken jade’ also has the same symbolism. ‘Pine and nut pine[松柏]’, ‘Pine and bamboo[松竹]’, and ‘Iron and stone[鐵石]’ are representative as natural symbols. These are used as symbols of fidelity due to their unchanging nature that endures trials. There are examples of them being used in conjunction with the concept of fidelity, and there are cases of them being used alone, but in terms of form, the literary symbolism of the former is inferior.
The fact that Lee Ju-hwan’s martyrdom was symbolized by a historical figure is a clear measure of the reality and historical perception of intellectuals at the time. The elements of Lee Ju-hwan’s martyrdom are ‘Invasion by foreign enemies’, ‘Dying following the death of the king’, and ‘Suicide’. And the underlying consciousness is the awareness of resistance, hardship, and revenge. However, among the symbols of historical figures used in the writings mourning and commemorating Lee Ju-hwan, Baek-i(伯夷), a hermit during the dynastic change period, appeared to be the most frequent, followed by Noh Jung-ryeon, who had resisted foreign invasion. This shows the characteristics of the consciousness of the time, which identified seclusion with the fidelity. In the same context, also Gil-jae or Do-jam were used as symbols of historical figures for Lee Ju-hwan’s martyrdom.
Wang Chok, Jeon Hoeng, and Yuk Su-bu, who had chosen suicide due to foreign invasion, are appropriate symbols because they had the highest correlation with Lee Ju-hwan’s martyrdom. On the other hand, Mun Cheon-sang and Lee Yak-su who had been killed by foreign invasion, Jeong Mong-ju who had been killed during the transition of the dynasty, and Ak-bi and Bi-gan who had been killed during the period of political chaos have less of a correlation with Lee Ju-hwan, but they have a correlation in that it is ‘death’ based on loyalty. Meanwhile Ye-yang and Hyeong-ga were swordsmen or assassin who had repaid kindness or had committed revenge, so it is perplexing how to interpret the fact that such figures symbolize Lee Ju-hwan’s martyrdom. Also, although they are used alone, most often appear in combination of two or more people. The combination of two or more people is mainly due to the rhetorical technique of antithesis, but the intention to increase the symbolism lies at the base. Therefore, rather than directly revealing the names of people, it is increasing literary symbolism through antonomasia(代稱).
The combination of historical figures in which the elements of ‘Invasion by foreign enemies’, ‘Dying following the death of the king’, and ‘Suicide’ match has a very high correlation, but there are not many such examples. Rather, the combination of inappropriate character symbols is the majority. This is a phenomenon due to the recognition of conventional symbol.
