김경욱 <천국의 문>에 나타난 죽음의 타자성 연구 (The Otherness of Death in Kim Kyounguk’s “Heaven’s Door”)

초록

본 연구는 김경욱의 <천국의 문>에 나타난 타자성의 양상을 분석하였다. <천국의 문>은 치매 노인의 부양과 죽음이라는 소재를 통해 일상에 편재하는 실존적 인간의 무관계성, 공동체의 해체, 타자의 망각에서 비롯된 은밀한 욕망과 폭력의 실체를 드러낸다. 이 작품에서 죽음의 절대성은 폭력처럼 여자가 아버지에게 느끼는 낯설음으로 기표화되어 레비나스(Emmanuel Levinas)의 타자성을 드러내고, 여자가 타자(the Other)에로 열리는 순간을 만든다. 치매로 죽어가는 ‘아버지’라는 타자의 들리지 않는 목소리는 텍스트에 거역할 수 없는 부름의 소리로 내재되어 있다. 부양자인 여자는 자신의 실존적 조건과 상황에 대해 성찰하며 타자를 자아의 내면에서 재현하려 한다. 그러나 이러한 이성적 노력은 오히려 균열과 파열의 틈새를 만들어낸다. 특히 작품의 반전이 일어나는 마지막 순간에서 여자와 독자들은 주체의 동일성이 해체되는 죽음의 외재성(exteriority)-죽음, 시간과 관련된 타자성을 사유하게 된다. 롤랑 바르트(Roland Barthes)의 5가지 코드로 죽음의 타자성이 드러나는 양상을 분석한 결과 여자의 ‘행위 코드(code proairetique)’와 ‘의미 코드(code semique)’는 연쇄적인 ‘해석학적 코드(code hermeneutique)’를 만들고 다시 풀어나가는 역할을 하고 이는 다시 ‘상징 코드(code symbolique)’로 수렴되고 있었다. ‘문화 코드(code culturel)’로 작용한 ‘천국의 문’에 대한 이야기는 자신 안의 타자성을 발견하게 한다. 또한 실비아 플라스(Sylvia Plath)의 시는 윤리적 응답의 문을 여는 깨달음의 계기가 되고 있다.

영어초록

This treatise analyzes the narrative aspect of the alterity revealed in “Heaven’s Door” written by Kim Kyounguk. “Heaven’s Door” describes desire and the entity of violence caused by the another person’s disregard, the disorganization of communities and the other’s oblivion. “Heaven’s Door” describes everyday experience such as secret desire through the subject of a woman’ supporting her father through dementia and dealing with his death.
In this story, the absoluteness of death is revealed as unfamiliarity which is conveyed through the violence of woman’s first experience of death. In addition, the absoluteness shows the woman, Levinas’ alterity and makes her open herself to the other. The other’s unheard voice, which symbolizes ‘the father who is’ dying of dementia, exists as an undeniable calling to her in this text.
Introspecting her own existence and circumstances, the woman, who is a supporter for her father, tries to reproduce the other in her mind. Her struggle leads to a gap and disruption in her conception of reality. Especially in the final moments of the novel, during the unexpected ending, the woman and readers cogitate on the alterity related to death and time, in which the exteriority of death disassembles the prior sense of sameness.
The alterity of death, as analyzed by Roland Barthes’ Five Codes, shows that the woman’s ‘code proairetique’ and ‘code semique’ build a chained ‘code hermeneutique’. At the same time, it functions to solve these codes which then converge as ‘code symbolique’. The episode of Heaven’s Door works as a ‘cultural code’ that highlights to us the alterity in ourselves. In addition, Sylvia Plath’s poem becomes a trigger of awareness that opens the door for ethical response.
