임진왜란기 崔文炳의 의병활동 (The volunteer military activities of Choi Moon Byung(최문병) in the Imjin War)

초록

임진왜란은 조선 사회를 뒤흔든 일대 사건이었다. 15만의 일본군은부산에 상륙한 지 열흘도 되지 않아 경상도 일원을 점령하였고 그들이 점령한 곳마다 살육, 방화로 조선 백성들의 삶은 말로 표현할 수없을 정도로 피폐해졌다. 이러한 상황을 맞아 수령과 관군은 흩어지고백성들은 피난처를 찾아 우왕좌왕 하던 긴급한 때에 경상좌도 경주부자인현 출신의 최문병(崔文炳)은 이른 시기에 왜적의 대규모 살육과방화로부터 향민을 보호하고 향토를 방위하는데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 이는 경상좌도에서는 매우 이른 시기로서 순수하게 지방민들을 중심으로 군량과 무기를 독자적으로 조달하여 자발적인 군사체제를 갖추었다는 점이 주목된다. 이 당시 자인현은 지역적으로는 경주부의 최남단에 위치한 속현이었기 때문에 본읍(경주부)으로부터 전쟁의 상황이나 소식을 전달받을 수도 없이 고립되어 있는 상태였다. 그럼에도불구하고 최문병은 자신의 향리인 자인 지역 이외에도 인근의 청도, 영천, 군위, 경주지역 등에 걸쳐서 폭넓게 의병활동을 펼침으로써 경상좌도의 보전에 크게 기여하였다. 그는 작은 고을인 자인에서 의병을봉기하여 천여 명의 의병을 거느리고 산악과 하천을 이용한 유격전을전개하여 왜적의 보급로를 차단하고 향토를 왜적으로부터 막아내는등 커다란 전과를 올렸다. 최문병 의병진은 단순히 자인지역의 향토방위의 범위를 넘어 경상좌도의 의병활동에 적지 않은 영향을 끼쳤다고생각된다.
그러나 최문병의 이와 같은 활동은 그 실상이 충분히 밝혀져 있지않다. 최문병의 의병활동은 임란초기의 경상좌도 의병활동에 있어서상당한 비중을 가짐에도 불구하고 지금까지 단편적으로 다루는데 그친 이유는 한정된 사료로 인하여 보다 구체적이고 세밀한 연구가 쉽지 않았기 때문으로 여겨진다. 본고에서는 경상좌도 의병의 한 축을담당하였던 자인현 최문병 의병진의 조직과 활동을 살펴 경상좌도 의병연구를 충실히 하고, 자인 의병이 壬辰倭亂史에서 갖는 의의를 고찰해 보고자 한다. 경상좌도의 경우 최문병과 같은 중소규모의 의병장들의 피나는 노력이 축적되어 영천성의 탈환 등의 전과를 거두었고 적의 보급선과 통신망을 차단하는 효과를 가져왔다. 최문병은 향리인 자인지역의 방위 뿐만 아니라 그 활동범위를 넓혀 나가 마침내 의병연합전선을 구축하고 청도의 두곡전투, 선암전투 그리고 영천성 탈환전투 등에 참여함으로써 임란 직후 경상좌도의 긴급 상황을 타개해 나간 점은 주목된다. 그러므로 관군의 재정비 기간을 거치면서 의병-관군 연합의 결과에 이르기까지 임란초기의 혼란상을 극복하기 위한 그의 의병활동을 살피는 연구는 경상좌도 의병사에 있어서 그에 대한인식을 제고하는 계기가 될 것이다.

영어초록

Imjin War(壬辰倭亂) was a major event that shook Chosun society in the end of the 16th century. 150,000 Japanese troops occupied Gyeongsangdo (慶尙道) within 10 days of landing in Busan, and with it the lives of the Chosun people were impoverished beyond words due to the slaughter and arson in every place they occupied. In this situation, district magistrates and their government troops were scattered, and the people was looking for shelter. In the instant peril, Choi Moon Byeong from Gyeongjubu(慶州府) Jainhyeon(慈仁縣) in Gyeongsangjwado(慶尙左道) played an important role in protecting the local people and defending the native land from massive slaughter and arson by the Japanese enemy. It is noteworthy that Choi Moon Byeong’s raising up forces took place in Gyeongsangjwado in the early days of the Imjin War, Furthermore He established a volunteer military system by independently procuring armaments and weapons centered on the local people. At that time, Jainhyeon was a subordinate province, located in the southernmost tip of Gyeongjubu, so was isolated from the major town, Gyeongjubu. Therefore Jainhyeon did not hear the news about the war. Nevertheless, Choi Moon Byeong greatly contributed to the conservation of Gyeongsangjwado by engaging in a wide range of Military activities in nearby Cheongdo, Yeongcheon, Gunwi, and Gyeongju areas in addition to the Jain area which was his own township. He raised up forces in Jain, a small village, with about a thousand soldiers, and engaged in a guerrilla battle using mountains and rivers, blocking the supply route of the Japanese enemy and blocking the native land from the their invasion. It is thought that Choi Moon Byeong's volunteer army had a considerable influence on the volunteer military activities of Gyeongsangjwado beyond the scope of the local defense of the Jain area.
However, the reality of Choi Moon Byeong's these volunteer military activities is not sufficiently revealed. His military activities were studied Fragmentarily due to limited data, although it took a significant portion in Gyeongsangjwado in the early stages of Imjin War. This paper is to examine the volunteer military organization and activities of Choi Moon Byeong, who Played an axis of movement in Gyeongsangjwado, and review the organization and activities of raising up forces in Gyeongsangjwado, and examine the significance of Jain volunteer military activities in the history of Imjin War. In the case of Gyeongsangjwado, the bloody efforts of small-sized soldiers such as Choi Moon Byeong were accumulated, which resulted in the recapture of Yeongcheonseong(永 川城) and the effect of blocking Japanese army supply lines and communication networks. Choi Moon Byeong not only defended his hometown Jain but gradually expanded the scope of its activities, finally establishing the united volunteer military Front and participating in the Battle of Dugok, Seonam, and Recapture of Yeongcheonseong, thereby overcome the emergency situation in Gyeongsangjwado immediately after outbreak of war. Therefore, a study about Choi Moon Byeong’s volunteer military activities to overcome the confusion in the early stages of the Imjin War will serve as an opportunity to raise a new awareness of the volunteer military history in Gyeongsangjwado.
