김춘수 시론에서 ‘무의미’와 ‘언어’의 관계 ―시의 현대성과 언어의 관련성을 중심으로 (Relationship between ‘Meaninglessness’ and ‘Language’ in an Essay on Poetry by Kim Chun-Su : Focusing on modernity of poem and its relevance to language)

초록

이 논문은 김춘수의 ‘무의미’ 시론이 제기한 시의 언어에 대한 문제의식을 중심으로 현대시에서 ‘언어’가 차지하는 기능과 위상을 살피고, 나아가 ‘무의미’ 시론의 시사(詩史)적 의미와 한계를 살펴보려 한다. 알다시피 시는 대표적인 ‘언어예술’로 평가된다. 하지만 시를 가리켜 ‘언어예술’이라고 말할 때의 ‘언어’가 정확하게 무슨 의미인지, 그것이 일상어는 물론 소설의 언어와 어떻게 같고 다른지는 여전히 해명되지 않고 있다. 20세기 후반의 현대철학은 상이한 철학적 입장에도 불구하고 이 ‘언어’의 특성을 ‘언어 정보 모델’과의 차별성을 통해 설명하려는 공통점을 보였다. 이는 ‘언어’가 안정적인 의미를 실어 나르는 전달 수단의 기능을 중지할 때에 비로소 문학, 특히 시의 언어일 수 있다는, 따라서 시의 언어는 표면적으로 ‘의미’를 전달하는 것처럼 보일 때조차 그 이상의 기능을 수행해야 한다는 합의가 전제된 것이라고 평가할 수 있다. 물론 이러한 언어의 반(反)소통적 성격만으로 현대시의 현대성이 모두 설명될 수는 없겠지만, 상징주의 이후 유럽의 현대시가 일정 부분 이 합의의 범위 안에서 발화되어 온 것도 사실이다. 김춘수의 무의미시론은 이러한 언어의 반(反)소통적 특징, 즉 시의 언어적 특성을 ‘언어 정보 모델’의 외부에서 찾으려는 실험으로 읽을 때 비로소 그 의미가 분명하게 드러난다. 다만 그는 언어의 반(反)소통적 성격을 회화에서의 ‘추상’과 동일한 층위에서 사고함으로써 시를 추상의 차원으로 개방하는 데는 성공했으나 결정적인 문제에 봉착하게 된다. 그것은 추상회화는 ‘대상’을 갖지 않을 수 있으나, 시는 우연성에 기초하여 철자와 구문을 해체하는 것 외에는 ‘대상’을 갖지 않기가 어렵다는 장르적 차이가 바로 그것이다. 이 논문에서는 김춘수의 시론의 전개․발전과정을 이런 관점에서 조망하고, 그것의 의미와 한계를 통해 시에서 ‘언어’의 문제를 다시 환기하고자 했다.

영어초록

This paper examines the function and status of ‘language’ in modern poem focusing on the critical mind by on poetic language suggested by Kim Chun-su in his ‘meaninglessness’ essay on poetry. The paper also examine the meaning and limitation of ‘meaninglessness’ essay on poetry from an aspect of poetic history. As is generally known, poem is often evaluated as representative ‘language art.’ Nevertheless, we have no clue as to what exactly ‘language’ in ‘language art’ means or how it can be compared to everyday words and language in novels when we call poem as ‘language art.’ Despite the completely different philosophical standpoint, modern philosophy in the late 20th century commonly attempted to explain the characteristics of this ‘language’ in ‘language art’ by differentiating it from ‘language information model.’ We can say that this is based on an agreement that ‘language’ can become literary language, particularly poetic language, only when it ceases to function as a delivery tool that carries stabilized meaning. That is, language in poems should fulfill its function beyond the carrier even when it seems to deliver ‘meaning’ on the surface. Surely, anti-communicative characteristics of language alone cannot fully explain the modernity of modern poem. However, it is true that modern poem in Europe has been developed based on this agreement after symbolism to a certain degree. Meaninglessness essay on poetry by Kim Chun-su can be truly understood when we read it by focusing on the anti-communicative characteristics of language. In other words, understanding the essay is an experiment of finding the linguistic characteristics of poem outside the ‘language information model.’ He successfully opened the abstract dimension of poem by understanding the anti-communicative characteristics of language in a similar context to ‘abstract’ paintings. However, he was encountered by a critical problem, which comes from the difference of genre. While abstract painting can have no ‘object,’ poem is unlikely to have no ‘object’ other than disassembling spelling and sentence based on its fortuitousness. This paper sheds lights on the developing and unfolding process of Kim Chun-su’s essay on poetry from this point of view and attempts to attract attention to the issue of ‘language’ in poem through its meaning and limitations.
