초록

이 논문은 1877경 편찬된 『觀世音菩薩妙應示現濟衆甘露』에 나타난 생명존중사상을 살펴보고자 하는 것이 목적이다. 이 책은 동대문 밖에서 일군의 재가자들이 모여 만든 妙蓮社라는 불교적 신앙결사체의 산물이라 평가할 수 있다. 유교적 가치가 지배한 조선시대 말기에, 불교적 가치에 입각한 수행과 사회적 실천을 강조하는 내용의 책이 편집되었다는 것은 매우 유의미한 사건으로 평가할 수 있다. 조선말기의 불교계는 암흑기였다는 점에서 특이하다.
이 책은 동북아 불교사상의 핵심인 화엄사상과 선사상의 바탕 위에서, 법화사상과 관음신앙을 독자적으로 이해하고 있다. 물론 그 밑바탕에 윤회론과 연기론이 내재되어 있지만, 불성론에 의거해 만물의 존귀함과 일체 존재의 평등을 강조하는 것은 매우 주목할 가치가 있다고 평가하지 않을 수 없다. 따라서 살생이나 육식을 극도로 경계하고 있으며, 편견과 무지를 버릴 때 만물을 사랑할 수 있다고 강조한다.
생명에 대한 존귀함과 평등을 강조하는 내용은 『능가경』이나 『사분율』, 『범망경』 등과 상통한다. 이러한 경전들은 전통적으로 동북아불교권에서 중요시했던 경전들이다. 그러나 이 책에서는 화엄과 선사상의 논리적 토대 위에서 법화사상이나 관음신앙을 융합해 이해하고 있는 점이 특징이다. 그리고 불살생의 사상적 연원은 『숫타니파타』의 아힘사나 박애사상에까지 소급될 수 있다는 점에서 지역적 한계를 극복하고 있다.
이 책에서는, 법화사상에 의거해 일체 존재를 보살의 화신이라 간주하고 대소사를 여래의 일로 인식하는 것이 필요하다고 말하는데, 그 논리적 바탕은 불성론에 의거한다. 그리고 불성론에 의거해 많은 사람들에게 수기를 주고 있다. 수기를 준다는 것은 구원의 보편성을 의미하는 것이며, 법화사상의 특징을 독자적으로 이해한 결과라 볼 수 있다. 수기를 받을 수 있다는 것이 바로 불성을 지니고 있기 때문이라 보는 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this thesis is to take a look at the life respect thought appearing in 'Gwanseeumbosalmyoeungshihyeonjejunggam- ro', which was compiled in around 1877. It can be evaluated that this book is a product of a Buddhist faith association called "Myoryeonsa", which was made by a group of the ratifiers by gathering outside the Dongdaemun Gate. The fact that the book with the contents that emphasize the practice based on the Buddhist values and the social practice had been edited at the end of the Joseon era, which the Confucian values had dominated, can be evaluated as a very meaningful incident. It is unusual with regard to the point that the Buddhist circle at the end of the Joseon era had been in a dark age.
This book has been independently understanding the 'Thoughts of the Lotus Sutra' and the Avalokitesvara belief above the background of the flower garland sutra and the Zen thought, which are the cores of the Buddhist thought in Northeast Asia. Although, of course, the theory of samsara and the theory of acting are inherent in the foundation, there is no choice but to evaluate that the emphases of the nobility of all things and the equality of all of the existences according to the theory of the nature of Buddha has the value that should be paid attention to very much. As a result, the killing and the meat diet have been extremely guarded against. And it emphasizes that one can love all things when throwing away the prejudices and the ignorance.
The content that emphasizes the nobility and the equality of life has the commonalities with the 'Lankavatara Sutra', 'Sabunyul', the 'Brahmajala Sutra', etc. Such scriptures are the scriptures that had considered the Northeast Asia Buddhist sphere as being important traditionally. However, in this book, the special feature is the point that the Thoughts of the Lotus Sutra and the Avalokitesvara belief have been understood by fusing them above the logical foundations of the Avatamska and the Zen thought. And the regional limitation can be overcome with regard to the fact that the ideological origin of ahimsa can be retroacted to the ahimsa or the humanitarian idea of Sutta Nipata.
In this book, according to the 'Thoughts of the Lotus Sutra', all of the existences are regarded as the incarnations of the Bodhisattva. And it says that the recognition of the matters great and small as the work of the Buddha is needed. The logical background is according to the nature of Buddha. And, according to the nature of Buddha, the sugis have been given to a lot of the people. Giving a sugi means the universality of the salvation. And it can be considered to be a result that independently understood the special features of the 'Thoughts of the Lotus Sutra'. It is seen that being able to receive a sugi is, indeed, because the nature of Buddha has been possessed.
