성형기술의 ‘몸’ 결정 요인 (Body's Determinant of Plastic Surgery Technology)

초록

이 글의 목적은 미용성형기술이 남녀 ‘겉 몸’의 윤곽과 이미지를 변형하고 구성할 때, 그 몸의 형태를 결정하는 ‘실제적’ 요인이 무엇인가를 탐색하려는 것이다. 성형수술의 결정권은 흔히 고객에게 주어져 있는 것으로 인식되지만 성형외과의 수술 과정이 없이는 완성될 수 없다는 점에서 제한적인 의미를 갖는다. 더욱이 성형수술은 의사의 시술법이나 손기술만으로 성취되는 것이 아니다. 첨단 성형수술 장비와 의료지식이 동시에 개입하여 이루어지는 작업이다. 이러한 점에서 몸의 형태를 결정하는 성형수술 과정에 여러 요인이 복합적으로 영향을 끼치게 된다. 본 연구는 성형수술 과정의 이러한 특징을 고려하여 성형수술 고객과 의사의 미적 합의 기준에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 다양한 변인들을 고찰하였다. 젠더 정체성은 물론 성형수술의 기원과 종류 및 구체적인 시술법, 그리고 수술 과정을 지원하는 첨단 성형수술 장비의 보급 실태 등을 다차원적으로 검토하였다. 연구 결과 성형의료기술은 일종의 기술권력의 지위를 확보하고 있는데, 그 구성 요소인 성형외과 의사, 성형 시술법과 손기술, 첨단화된 성형수술 장비가 하나의 기술체계를 형성함으로써 수요자인 성형 고객의 몸 구성을 강력하게 지배하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그 결과 성형 수요자인 남녀의 몸은 스스로의 선택에 의해 그 형태가 성취되는 것이 아니라 ‘정형화된 성형기술체계’에 의해 결정되는 기술권력의 한 가운데에 놓여있음이 확인되었다. 그러나 이 연구는 사회구성물로서의 몸이, 정형화된 성형기술체계에 저항하는 흔적들을 포착하지 못하였다. 이 문제는 과학기술사회학의 향후 연구 과제가 된다.

영어초록

The aim of this study is to investigate the ‘practical’ factors determining the male's and female's surface and image in the operating process of plastic surgery technology. Generally, people recognize that the customer has a determinative right of plastic surgery operation. But operating process of plastic surgeon is indispensable in the process of a plastic operation. Accordingly it is restrictive meaning that the customer has a determinative right of plastic surgery operation. In addition, the plastic surgery operation is not accomplished by only plastic surgeon's operating method or his hand-skill. Ultramodern advanced plastic surgery operating equipments and developing knowledge of plastic surgery also intervene concurrently in the process of operating. Therefore, the process of body's surface determination is affected by many factors complicatedly. This paper examined various factors which can affect the standard of agreement between consumers and surgeons in the light of the above mentioned characteristics of the plastic surgery operation. Hence, this study multi-dimensionally examined gender identity, the origin and kinds of plastic surgery, concrete opreating methods, the supply conditions of ultramodern advanced plastic surgery equipments keeping the process of operating. Based on the findings of this study, it can be argued that plastic surgery technology maintains a sort of status of technological power. The plastic surgery technology as a sort of status of technological power includes three factors: the plastic surgeon, the plastic operational methods and hand-skill, and the ultramodern advanced surgical equipments. And these three factors constitutes a singular technological system. Consequently, all this points to the result that plastic surgery technological system strongly dominates the body construction of both male and female customers. In other words, male and female consumer's body is not achieved by their own selection, but determined by ‘the typicalized technological system’ of the plastic surgery. And the customer's body is under the control and dominance of the typicalized systemetic ‘technological power’. However this study could not catch any traces for the human body as a social construction to resist to the typicalized plastic surgery technological system. This theme provides a future field of study for the sociology of science and technology.
