초록

본 연구는 최신 기술과 융합된 현대 공연에서 배우의 목소리에 내재한 실재성을 탐구함으로써, 현존의 지각 과정을 배우 목소리의 관점으로 바라보고자 한다. 그리하여 서사의 전달체로서 역할 하는 목소리가 아닌, 실재하는 에너지로서 배우의 목소리가 현존을 지각시키는 요소로서 기능하는 가능성에 관한 탐구를 목적으로 두었다. 최신 기술과 융합된 사운드 이머시브(sound immersive) 공연은 더 이상 ‘보는’ 것이 아니라 청각적 자극을 통한 ‘듣는’ 것으로 옮겨갔다. 시각적 차원의 공연 예술이 청각적 차원으로 이동하며 관객의 수용미학적 관점은 배우의 목소리가 지닌 새로운 가능성에 재조명한다. 배우 목소리의 실재성은 발화하는 주체의 존재를 청자에게 지각시키며, 배우와 관객과의 상호 관계를 생산한다. 몸을 통해 발화하여 청각기관을 지닌 관객의 몸으로 인식되고, 배우의 몸과 관객의 몸을 연결하는 매개로서 작용하는 것이다. 인지신경학적인 관점에서 현존은 단순한 시공간의 근접함에 영향을 받는 것이 아니라 이로 인한 ‘상호 관계’의 형성과 그들만의 ‘공유된 순간’을 통해 이뤄진다는 것을 밝혔다. ‘다크필드(Darkfield)’의 <고스트 쉽(Séance)>에 등장하는 ‘영매’는 관객에게 가까이 다가가 귓속말하고, 관객의 호흡 속도를 조절하며 대답을 끌어낸다. 영매의 목소리는 관객의 생리학적 반응에 영향을 미치고 그들만의 ‘공유된 순간’을 형성하여 관객으로 하여금 배우의 현존을 지각시킨다. 그리하여 배우의 신체가 존재하므로 관객이 지각하는 배우의 현존과 같이 배우의 목소리를 통해서 관객이 배우의 현존을 지각하는 과정을 탐구할 뿐만 아니라 배우가 무대 위에 존재하지 않는 현대 공연에서 배우의 목소리는 기의로서의 역할을 넘어서 부재하는 배우의 존재를 관객에게 지각시키는 실재하는 에너지로서 기능하는 배우 목소리의 가능성을 재조명시키고자 한다.

영어초록

This study aimed to explore the inherent sense of existence conveyed through actors’ voices within contemporary performances integrated with the latest technology, examining the process perceiving presence from the viewpoint of the actors’ voices themselves. The objective was to investigate the potential for actors’ voices serving as tangible energy that facilitates the perception of presence. Sound immersive performances integrated with the latest technology no longer emphasize ‘seeing.’ Rather, they transition towards ‘listening’ through auditory stimulation, shedding new light on the potentials of actors’ voices. The existence of actors’ voices enables listeners to perceive the speaker’s being, thereby fostering a mutual relationship between the actors and the audience. From a cognitive neuroscience perspective, it was revealed that existence is not solely influenced by temporal and spatial proximity but is also shaped by the formation of ‘mutual relationships’ and the ‘shared moments’ they cultivate. In Darkfield's Séance, the ‘medium’ interacts with each audience member, whispering closely and engaging in conversation. The medium's voice influences the physiological responses of the audience, creating ‘shared moments’ and facilitating the audience’s perception of the actor’s existence. Therefore, this study will reassess the potential of actors’ voices as tangible energy within contemporary performances integrated with digital technology, enabling the audience to perceive the actors’ existence despite their absence on stage. This study is an exploration of the reality inherent in the actor's voice in the existing perception process, and attempts to look at the existing perception process from the perspective of the actor's voice. Therefore, since the actor's body exists, the process by which the audience perceives the actor's presence through the actor's voice is examined. In other words, it is to re-examine the possibility of an actor's voice that functions as energy to perceive an absent character, not a voice as a means of conveying a narrative.
