유아미술작품에 반영된 목소리의 의미 고찰 (Examining Children's Narratives Told through Artworks)

초록

유아들의 미술작품은 경험의 의미를 재현하는 수단이 된다. 유아들은 자신들이 아는 것을 표현하고 시각적 언어를 통해 그들이 알고 싶어 하는 것을 암시하기도 한다. 유아들의 미술은 느낌과 생각을 공유할 수 있는 또 다른 언어를 제공해 준다. 미술과의 만남은 의사소통의 장을 개방해 주며 그것은 경험에 대한 반성과 재형성을 하며 미술 그 자체는 의미 구성을 뒷받침 해준다. 이러한 이해는 의식의 연결, 경험의 내용과 순간의 변형에 대한 비판적 획득 등을 의미하는 것이다 (Greene, 1978). 그러므로, 유아들의 미술이 우리에게 말하고자 하는 것을 연구하는 것은 새로운 시각을 통해 유아를 보는 것과 마찬가지라 할 수 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 유아들의 미술이 가지는 의미와 유아미술의 미학적인 시사를 검토하고자 한다. 그 결과 유아들의 미술작품에서 반영되는 목소리는 어떠한 의미를 가지고 있는가에 대해 고찰해 보고자 한다.

영어초록

Works of art are not remote from common life. When they are widely enjoyed within a community, they are signs of unified, collective life. But they are also marvelous aids in the creation of such a life. For children, the creation of art is a process that brings together different experiences to create something new, personal, and unique. Most of all, it is essential to respect children's visual communications for all their richness, uniqueness, complexity, and spontaneity.
Children's art expressions, like children themselves, are individual and must be considered as such and within the larger context of children's developmental, emotional, social, and cultural experience. Children impose their personal stamp on general forms, and express their individuality through their own unique style as soon as they are able to generate the first representational modes. The remaking of the material of experience as an act of expression is not an isolated event confined to the artist and to a person here and there who happens to enjoy the work. Artwork provides a way for children to communicate issues, feelings, and other experiences, and to explore, invent, and solve problems through self-expression. In addition to this, narratives told through art function as a self-report. They open the door to cultural awareness, perceptual development, and self-actualization. Art expression may supplement or support information, or may, in most cases, serve as a way for children to communicate and participate in creative works.
Art interpretation, as a means of understanding and constructing self, is based on the view of self as the accumulated life experiences each of us possess. “Self” is a whole consisting of different roles and relations, but cultural identity also plays a crucial part. Self-identity is the experience of distinctness, agency, and continuity that is formed throughout one's personal life. Transfer leads to increased self-consciousness and meta-cognitive skills. I believe that art expression serves a narrative function for children by externalizing their experiences, thoughts, and feelings through visual images. Any approach using children's narratives may rely largely on verbal storytelling to allow the children to share information about the content of their drawings, and for most children, this is helpful and necessary feedback about the meaning of their art expressions. So, drawings per se are an age-appropriate and effective form of narrative for children. Integration of both drawing and verbal description provides a means of deeper understanding of children. This process enables children to develop the capacity to create meaning out of lived experience by representing their own reactions to events through multiple forms.
Graphic work is truly “visible thinking.” Reference to art is an open concept, and it allows us to change and redefine specific cultural and social circumstances. Unlike verbal expression, it is not linear, but a circulating and repetitive process. The process of meaning-making is a powerful framework that allows children to construct and generate meanings for themselves and for others. Thus, the features displayed in graphic work represent all aspects of children's lives. The art illustrates children's thinking and our own as well. It is impossible to separate these areas of experience from one another, for they are interwoven. Children's graphic works are not only visible thoughts, but also represent very real pictures from the children's lives. What we can read from their artwork are the authentic stories of children.
