‘디지털 네이티브’ 개념 재정립의 필요성 고찰 - 「‘모바일 네이티브’ 개념과 특성」을 중심으로 (Consideration of the need to re-establish the concept of ‘digital native’ - Focused on「the concept and characteristics of mobile natives」)

초록

본 연구에서는 ‘모바일 환경에서 성장한 ’디지털 네이티브(digital natives)‘의 개념과 특성에 대해 고찰함으로써 관련 논의의 이론적 기반 구축과 활성화에 기여하려고 한다. 최근 국내 대학에서 관심이 고조되고 있는 디지털 리터러시 교육이 효과적으로 이루어지기 위해서는 전통적 리터러시와 디지털 리터러시의 조화를 이룰 수 있는 방안 모색, 디지털 리터러시 인식에 대한 교수자와 학습자의 간극과 대응 방법 개발 등이 필수적이다. 디지털 리터러시 교육 대상의 규정은 모바일 기기(mobile device)의 상용화 시기 및 무선 통신 환경 구축과 밀접하게 연관된다. 현재 대학에 재학 중인 학생들은 국내에서 초등학교 시기부터 모바일 환경과 문화에 노출되며 성장한 첫 세대로 ‘모바일 네이티브(mobile native)’로 규정할 수 있다. 모바일 네이티브는 소셜 미디어의 발달 단계를 직접 경험하며 성장한 세대로 초연결을 일상적 상태로 인식하며 모바일 네트워크를 기반으로 콘텐츠에 대한 다중적 접속이 일상화된 사회에서 특정 콘텐츠를 공유하고 상호작용을 통해 또 다른 콘텐츠를 생산하는 일련의 과정에 익숙하다. 소셜 미디어를 통해 동일한 콘텐츠를 같은 시간에 향유하고 생각과 느낌들의 실시간 교환과 공유가 일상적으로 실현되는 경험의 반복은 ‘나는 특정한 국가에 속하는 존재인 동시에 세상 누구와도 소통하고 공감할 수 있는 세계인’이라는 사고를 가능하게 만들고 글로벌 정체성을 구축하는 인식적 기반으로 작용할 수 있다. 모바일 네이티브는 디지털 기술 감각을 토대로 소셜 미디어를 통해 자신을 효과적으로 전시하는 전략을 구사하는데 소셜 미디어는 전시 욕망을 실현하는 공간이자 실현된 욕망은 자신의 정체성을 구축하는 방식으로 귀결되지만 소셜 미디어의 프로필은 불안정하고 정체성 역시늘 유동적인 상태에 놓일 수밖에 없다. 모바일 네이티브의 진학으로 인해 최근 대학에서는 모바일 네이티브와 디지털 이민자인 두 개 항의 대립이 가시화되기 시작했다. 모바일 네이티브인 학습자와 디지털 네이티브인 교수자 사이에는 리터러시 능력을 둘러싸고 갈등이 일어날 가능성을 배제하기 어렵다. 따라서 모바일 네이티브의 리터러시 능력을 교육적 차원에서 소외시키지 않으면서도 전통적 리터러시 교육과 공존할 수 있는 교육 콘텐츠의 개발과 교육적 실천이 지속적으로 시도되어야 한다.

영어초록

In this study, the concept and characteristics of 'Digital natives' who grew up in a mobile environment are considered to contribute to the establishment of a theoretical foundation for related discussions. In order to effectively implement digital literacy education, which is being attempted in universities, it is necessary to find a way to harmonize traditional literacy and digital literacy, to recognize the gap between instructors and learners in digital literacy perception, and to develop a response method. do. The regulation of the target of digital literacy education is closely related to the construction period of the mobile-based digital technology environment, specifically, the commercialization period of mobile devices and the construction of the wireless communication environment. Students currently enrolled in universities can be defined as the first generation who grew up exposed to the mobile environment and culture from elementary school in Korea, that is, ‘mobile natives’. Although mobile natives share some of the characteristics of digital natives, they perceive so-called hyper-connection as a daily state as a generation that has grown up experiencing the developmental stage of social media, a key factor in the mobile era.
In addition, mobile natives are familiar with the series of processes of sharing specific content and producing other content through interaction in a society where multiple access to content is commonplace based on mobile networks. Through the repetition of experiences that are routinely realized through social media to enjoy the same content at the same time and to exchange and share thoughts and feelings in real time, ‘I belong to a particular country. And it makes it possible to recognize that I am a global citizen who can communicate and empathize with anyone in the world.’ This awareness can serve as a cognitive basis for building a global identity. Mobile natives use their digital technology sensibility to effectively showcase themselves through social media. For mobile natives, social media is a space for realizing exhibition desires, and the realized desires result in the construction of one's own identity. Recently, in domestic colleges, the confrontation between mobilel natives and digital immigrants has begun to become visible. In this situation, there is a strong possibility that a conflict may arise between learners who are mobile natives and teachers who are digital immigrants over the recognition and measurement of literacy skills. Therefore, the development and educational practice of educational content that can coexist with traditional literacy education should be continuously attempted without alienating the literacy ability of mobile natives from the educational level.
