초록

유교 경전의 번역은 일반적인 도서와는 그 결을 달리한다. 유교 경전의 번역은 단순히 고전의 번역에만 머무르지 않는 상당한 시대의 문제의식을 동반했다. 다양한 번역의 목적과 논리를 검토해 보아야 하는 이유이다.
논의를 『맹자』의 번역으로 구체화 시켜보면 우리는 현존하는 번역본의 상당수는 주자의 집주에 근거한 것이라는 사실에서도 알 수 있듯이 여전히 주자학을 근간에 두고 해석하려는 경향이 없지 않다. 그것은 학술성의 측면에서 주희의 주석이 지닌 완전성에 기인하는 점도 없지 않지만 더욱 중요한 원인은 조선시대 내내 그 학술적 중심성을 잃지 않았던 주자학의 사적 전개와도 무관하지 않다. 그러므로 조선 문인들의 문집을 읽어 내기 위해서는 그 기초문헌인 유가 경전에 대한 이해를 하지 않을 수 없고, 그 유가경전을 읽고 기록한 토대가 된 주자학적 시야를 활용하지 않으면 안 된다는 논리가 상당한 설득력을 가지고 현대 유교경전의 향유층에 공유되고 있기 때문이다.
그런데 한문을 한글로 번역하는데 가장 결정적인 계기가 되었던 경서언해 이후 전개된 경전번역의 과정을 살펴보면 번역의 내용과 번역어의 선정만큼이나 그 번역의 목적과 논리, 그리고 그것을 현실화한 번역의 체계를 한번 검토할 필요가 있다.
유교경전, 『맹자』 번역의 목적과 논리를 중심으로 주요한 번역성과를 점검 본 결과 경전 번역의 중점과 시야는 점차 과감한 변화의 경로를 걷고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 근자에 평가된『맹자』의 가장 좋은 번역서는 성백효의 『맹자집주』와 차주환의 『한글판맹자』, 이기동의 『맹자강설』과 박경환의 『맹자』, 이을호의 『한글맹자』이 올랐으며, 외국학자의 번역으로는 드물게 양백준의 『맹자역주』가 평가받았다. 오역의 문제, 충실한 자료의 전역, 주희의 해석이 아닌 다른 측면에서의 번역, 다산의 주석 반영 등이 그 이유로 제시되었다.
이런 추세로 간다면 번역된 焦循의 『孟子正義』, 일본 安正衡의 『孟子定本』 등이 평가받을 날이 멀지 않으며, 또한 다산 뿐 아니라 성호 이익을 비롯한 다양한 조선 학자들의 주석 성과를 반영한 번역서가 평가받을 날도 멀지 않았다.
분명한 것은 그 방향은 점차 학술적인 국면으로 진행되고 있으며, 그 해석의 시야는 점차 확장되고 있다는 것이다. 다만 여전히 초동급부에게도 유교 경전의 내용을 보이고자 한 『언해맹자』의 성과는 여전히 간과할 수 없는 경전번역의 문제의식을 상기시킨다.

영어초록

The translation of the Confucian scriptures has different pattern and implication from other general publications. The translation of the Confucian scriptures has accompanied the critical mind of substantial period without stationing only in translation of classics only. This is the reason to review the purpose and reasoning of diverse translation works.
Looking more in details for the translation of 『Mencius』, it demonstrates that a significant number of translation works is based on the Collected Annotation of the Analects of Confucius and it is attributable to the fact that there is a tendency of interpreting Neo-Confucianism as its foundation. In the academic aspect, it may be caused by the completeness contained in the annotation of Zhu Xi, but even more important cause is that it is closely related to the historic deployment of Neo-Confucianism that retained its academic focus persisting during the Joseon Dynasty. Therefore, in order to read the literature collection by the literary men of Joseon, one must understand the basic literature in Confucian scriptures, and it is reasonable to facilitate the Confucius insight that is the basis to read and record Confucian scriptures and this logic has substantial power of persuasion to share the same in the coriander class of the contemporary Confucian scriptures.
However, looking into the process of translation of scriptures deployed after Annotation of Scripture that had been the critical turning point to translate Chinese writings in Korean, there is a need to review the purpose and reasoning of translation along with the system of realistic translation as much as the contents of translation and selection of translated version.
As a result of inspecting the main translation outcome around the purpose and reasoning for translation of Confucian scriptures and Mencius. The focus and insight of the translation of the scripture is confirmed to gradually take the routes of bold changes. The best and most recently assessed translated publication of Mencius included Mencius Jipju of Sung Baek-hyo, Hangul-version Mencius of Cha Ju-hwan, Mencius Gangseol of Lee Ki-dong, Mencius of Park Kyung-hwan, and Hangul Mencius of Lee Gil-ho, and for a rare case of translation by a foreign scholar, 『Mencius Annotation』 of Yang Baek-chun were assessed. The issue of erroneous translation, full translation of substantial data, translation in an aspect other than interpretation of Zhu Xi, reflection of Dasan's annotations and so forth are offers as the basis.
If this trend is continued, the translated Jiao Xun(焦循)'s Definition of Mencius, Genuine Copy of Mencius of Japan's An Jung-hyung(안정형) and others will soon be assessed, and in addition, the translated publications that reflected on the annocation outcome of Joseon's scholars, including Dasan and Sungho along with various scholars would soon be assessed.
What is clear is that the direction has been processed gradually toward the academic aspect, and the view to the interpretation has been gradually expanding. However, the outcome of Mencius Annotation that is intended to display the contents of the Confucian scriptures to children and women brings up the critical mind on the translation of scriptures that cannot be overlooked.
