초록

본 논고에서는 가정29년명 〈관세음보살32응탱(觀世音菩薩三十二應幀)〉(이하, 본도)의 형식 및 양식 고찰의 기반 위에 그 도상학적 의미를 고찰하였다. 본도에는 조선시대의 모범적 전형(典型)이 되는 관세음보살이 등장하는데, 먼저 전 시대의 고려 수월관음과 비교하여 그 형식과 양식의 상이점을 밝혀 보았다. 그리고 같은 시대의 중국 및 일본의 유사 주제 작례와의 비교를 통해, 「관세음보살보문품」의 내용이 얼마나 독창적으로 본도에 구현되었는지를 살펴보았다. 이에 보문품의 내용을 한 폭의 산수화 속에 앉힌 본도의 구도는 여타 작례에서는 볼 수 없는 대담하고도 획기적인 것임을 확인하였다. 또 관세음보살이 중생을 통찰하는 관점을 조감도식(鳥瞰圖式) 관점으로 묘사한 화사 이자실의 탁월한 불교적 해석력을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 산수화 및 불화, 두 개의 장르에 모두 통달한 이자실은 과연 어떤 가계(家系)의 인물인지, 화승(畵僧)으로서의 그의 내력을 살펴보았다. 이에 조선전기 이자실 작품으로 추정되는 〈금니수월관음도〉와 〈아미타삼존도〉를 예로 들어, 형식적 유사성과 화기(畵記) 내용의 공통점을 비교 분석하여, 이자실이 ‘비구희안(比丘希顔)’일 가능성도 제시하였다. 마지막으로, 본도의 제명으로 쓰인 ‘삼십이응신(三十二應)’에 대한 종교적 의미를, 초기경전 『삼십이상경(三十二相經)』을 통해 밝혀보았다. 『법화경』의 방편바라밀의 구현으로서의 삼십이응신이 어떻게 보문관음의 자비행과 연결되는지, 그 신앙적 의의를 논하였다. 이 같은 작업을 통하여 본도에서 나타내고자 한 진면목을 밝혀, 본도의 의의와 기능을 고찰하였다.

영어초록

In this paper, the iconographical meanings of the early Joseon period 〈Thirty-two Nirāmaṇakāya Avalokiteśvara Painting(觀世音菩薩三十二應幀)〉 were examined on the basis of the form and style consideration. In the center of the painting, Avalokiteśvara is shown in such a lively way in bright color which became an exemplary model of the Joseon Dynasty throughout. First, this main figure was compared with the Water-moon Avalokiteśvara in the Goryeo Dynasty of the previous period, and the differences between the form and style were discussed. And by comparing with the works of similar subjects in China and Japan of the same period, how creatively the contents of 「the Universal Gate of Avalokiteśvara(觀世音菩薩普門品)」 in Lotus Sutra were embodied in this work. Through this kind of comparison, this study confirmed that the composition of the painting which shows organic harmony of the multiple scenes well-placed in the background of a magnificent landscape to be bold and original, can not be found in any other similar themed works.
Representing the perspective of Avalokiteśvara’s insight of the world in a bird's eye view style(鳥瞰圖式) drawing shows that Lee Jasil(李自實) the painter of this work was outstanding at interpreting Buddhist scriptures. He seems to be master in both landscape and Buddhist paintings. Therefore, the possibility that he could be a monk painter(畵僧) was examined by tracing down the history of his family and through the records found in his art works.
Taking the example of 〈Water-moon Avalokiteśvara in Gold(金泥水月觀音圖)〉 and 〈Amitabha-Triad(阿彌陀三尊圖)〉 paintings of the Joseon Dynasty, which is considered to be the works of Lee Jasil, the formal similarity and the same phrase of records in the paintings were analyzed.
Finally, the religious meaning of the term “Thirty-two Nirāmaṇakāya (三十二應)” as the title of the painting was revealed through the early Buddhist scripture Lakkhana-Sutta(or mahā-puruṣa lakṣaṇa sutra, 三十二相經). By looking into the fundamental meaning, it became clesr that the thirty-two Nirāmaṇakāya was proposed as an implementation of Upaya-pāramitā in Lotus Sutra directly relating to the mercy or compassion of the Universal Gate Avalokiteśvara. Through this work, the basic meaning of the painting was revealed and the significance and function of this work were examined.
