한‧일 명산문화 전통의 역사지리적 비교 고찰 (A Comparative Study on the Historical Geography of Korea-Japan Famous Mountain Cultural Traditions)

초록

한‧일 명산문화 연구의 학술적 목적은 역사적으로 전개된 명산문화의 과거를 돌아보고 현재의 실태를 진단하며 미래를 전망하기 위한 기초적 비교연구의 틀을 수립하는 데 있다. 이 글은 명산문화의 본격적인 조사연구를 위한 첫걸음으로서, 한‧일의 명산문화 전통을 대상으로 역사지리적 논의의 프레임과 비교문화적 고찰의 試金石을 마련하는 시도로서 의미를 지닌다.
한국과 일본 사람들은 명산과 더불어 살면서 명산에 대한 심층적인 문화를 꽃피웠다. 靈山으로 숭배하거나 생명의 기운을 주는 소중한 것으로 여기는 오랜 전통을 지녀왔다. 예술적 영감을 불러일으켜 수많은 작품을 탄생시켰고, 민속예능을 지역마다 전승시켰다. 지식인들에게 명산은 도덕적 이상을 비추는 거울이자 인성을 수양하는 대상이기도 하였다.
이처럼 명산문화의 스펙트럼은 역사‧생활‧종교‧사상‧예술 등의 다방면에서 큰 비중을 차지하지만 본격적인 탐구와 체계적인 연구는 부족하다. 동아시아의 보편과 특수의 맥락에 있는 명산문화의 전통에 대한 학술적 논구가 필요한 이유다. 이에 우선적으로 한‧일의 명산문화 전통과 개념에서 무엇이 같고 어떻게 다른지를 비교해 조명하고, 그 배경과 이유를 밝힐 필요가 있다.
한‧일의 명산문화는 닮은꼴[類似性]이 많다. 한국과 일본은 공히 산의 나라이자 산의 민족이라고 할 만하다. 국토면적에서 산지의 비율이 큰 비중을 차지하고 있는 것이다. 그 대부분의 산은 사람들이 삶을 영위할 수 있는 공간적 토대이자 생산의 터전으로서 생활의 장소이기도 했다. 이러한 지리적 배경은 한‧일의 산악문화 더 나아가 명산문화의 닮은꼴을 胚胎한 기본적인 토대가 되었다. 그토록 오래된 산과 사람의 역사지리적 상호관계에 의해, 산악문화(산악신앙)의 全域性 및 대중성과, 이에 따른 산의 의인화 및 인간화 과정도 일반적으로 드러난다. 산으로 인해 유발되는 자연재해에 대한 문화생태적인 대응과, 산의 威神力에 기대어 자연재해를 방지하고자 하는 양상도 흥미로운 측면이다.
한‧일의 명산문화는 다른꼴[特異性]도 많다. 가장 뚜렷한 것은 자연지형적으로, 火山의 속성 유무 및 고도와 기복의 차이다. 이러한 지점은 서로 다른꼴의 문화역사적 명산정체성을 배태한 기본적인 요인이 되었다. 종교사상적으로, 일본에 비해 한국에서 유교사상은 명산문화 전통의 발달과 변모에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 그리고 산악신앙적으로, 동물 산신 관념에서 일본의 다종다양한 종류와는 상대적으로 한국은 호랑이산신의 대표성이 분명하게 드러났다.
한‧일 명산문화의 전통을 상호간에 구체적으로 대비하면 여러 특징적 요소들이 부각된다. 먼저 일본의 특색을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 산악인식의 양면성과 중층성-상반적 병존이다. 둘째, 산신의 다기능적‧시공간적 변환과 회귀성이다. 셋째, 靈山的 성격과 神体山의 속성이다. 넷째, 神佛習合의 전통과 本地垂迹의 결합 패턴, 곤겐[權現]과 名山曼陀羅의 출현이다. 다섯째, 山中他界의 地獄景觀이다. 여섯째, 여타 명산에 대한 후지산[富士山]의 대표성 및 주종성이다. 일곱째, 명산 수행을 체계적으로 실천한 슈겐도[修驗道]의 존재다. 여덟째, 명산 순례[參詣]의 조직화된 형태로서 山岳講이다. 관점을 바꾸어, 한국 명산문화 전통의 특색을 일본과 대비하여 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현세적‧실재적 이상향의 소재지가 명산에 있었다. 둘째, 조선시대를 거치면서 유교적 명산문화가 성행하여 널리 사회적으로 확산되었다. 셋째, 풍수사상이 미친 명산 인식과 장소 의식의 측면이 강했다.

영어초록

The academic purpose of the study of famous mountain culture is to look back on the past of famous mountain culture developed in Korea and Japan’s diagnose the current status, and establish a basic comparative research framework to predict the future. This article is meaningful as a first step for the full-fledged investigation and study of famous mountain culture, and as an attempt to prepare a frame of historical and geographical discussion and a touchstone for comparative cultural consideration for Korea and Japan.
Korean and Japanese people have lived with famous mountains and have blossomed an in-depth culture of famous mountains. It has a long tradition of worshiping as a spiritual mountain or considering it as a precious thing that gives energy to life. It inspired artistic inspiration to create numerous works and handed down folk rituals from region to region. For intellectuals, the famous mountain was a mirror of moral ideals and an object of cultivation of character.
As such, the spectrum of famous mountain culture occupies a large proportion in various fields such as history, life, religion, thought, and art, but full-fledged exploration and systematic research are insufficient. This is why an academic thesis is needed on the tradition of famous mountain culture in the context of universality and speciality in East Asia. First of all, it is necessary to compare and shed light on what is the same and how it is different from the traditions and concepts of famous mountain culture between Korea and Japan, and to reveal the background and reason.
The culture of famous mountains between Korea and Japan have many similarities. Korea and Japan are both mountain countries and people of mountains. The proportion of mountainous areas in the country accounts for a large proportion. Most of the mountains were both a spatial foundation and a place of life for people to lead their lives. This geographical background became the basic foundation for embodying the resemblance of the mountain culture of Korea and Japan as well-known mountain culture of Korea and Japan.
There are many differences in the culture of famous mountains between Korea and Japan. The most obvious is the presence or absence of the nature of volcanoes and the difference of the mountain altitude or ups and downs in natural topography. This point became a basic factor in the birth of different cultural and historical famous mountain identities. In this paper, the characteristics of the famous mountain culture of Korea and Japan are described in eight points of Japan and three points of Korea, respectively.
