『性自命出』을 통해 본 전국시대 유가 예악관 - 「樂記」와 비교를 중심으로 (The Confucian Theory of Rites and Music in the Warring States Period Examined through Xing Zi Ming Chu (性自命出) - Focusing on the Comparison with Yüeh Ji (樂記))

초록

본 연구는 전국시대 출토 문헌인 곽점 초간 가운데 대표적 유가저작인 『성자명출(性自命出)』과 『예기』 「악기」의 비교분석을 통해 전국시대 유가 예악관의 특징과 의의를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 『성자명출(性自命出)』의 체제와 중심내용 및 『성자명출(性自命出)』의 예론과 악론을 고찰하였으며, 이어 예악의 근본·예악의 개념과 속성·예악 교화를 중심으로 『성자명출(性自命出)』과 「악기」를 비교 분석하여 유가 예악 사상의 전승 과정을 살펴보았다.
이를 바탕으로 유추해 본 전국시대 유가 예악관의 특징과 의의는 첫째, 전국시대 유가는 예악의 근원을 인간 내면의 심성에서 비롯된 것으로 여겼다는 점으로 이는 인도(人道)를 중시한 인문정신의 발현이라 할 수 있다. 둘째, 악에 관한 구체적 담론이 시작되었다는 점으로, 인간의 심성에 관한 논의가 본격화되면서 심성론의 관점에서 예와 악을 파악하는 사조가 형성된 것이다. 셋째, 예악 교화의 가장 효과적인 방법으로 악을 제시하였다는 점이다. 악은 사람의 감정과 직접적인 관련이 있기에 감화의 효과가 크다고 여겼던 것으로 특히 고대 성인의 아악[古樂]으로 교화해야 함을 강조하였다. 넷째, 예악 교화를 위한 전제로 군자의 수양을 강조하였다는 점으로, 이는 수기안인(修己安人) 정신의 계승을 보여준다. 다섯째, 예악 교화를 통해 인간의 덕성을 함양하고, 선을 돌이켜 본연의 선한 성품을 회복시키고자[反善復始] 했다는 점으로, 이는 공맹 사상과 맥을 같이 한다는 사상사적 의의를 보여준다.
이밖에 『성자명출(性自命出)』에서는 볼 수 없었던 「악기」의 특징으로는 첫째, 예와 악에 관하여 구체적으로 논의되었으며 상반된 각각의 개념과 속성뿐 아니라 상호 간의 관계에 대해서도 체계적으로 서술하고 있다는 점과 둘째, 예와 악을 천지(天地)·음양(陰陽)의 이치로 설명했다는 점을 들 수 있다. 이러한 비교분석을 통해 유가 예악의 사상적 흐름의 일면을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This research aims at examining the features and significance of the Confucian view of rites and music in the Warring states period by comparing and analyzing Xing Zi Ming Chu (性自命出) and Chapter Yüeh Ji (樂記), the representative Confucian writings among the Guodian Bamboo Manuscripts (郭店楚簡), the excavated document from the Warring states period. For this purpose, first, the structure and the main contents of Xing Zi Ming Chu and the theory of rites and that of music in Xing Zi Ming Chu were investigated, and then Xing Zi Ming Chu and Yüeh Ji were compared and analyzed centered around the root, concept and quality, and reformation of rites and music to study the inheritance process of the theory of rites and music. Based on this, the features and significance of the Confucian theory of rites and music in the Warring states period can be inferred as follows.
First, in the Confucianism during the Warring states period, human mind was considered as the root of rites and music, and it could be said to be the manifestation of humanistic spirit laying emphasis on humanity. Second, a detailed discussion about evil had begun. As the argument over human nature began in earnest, the trend of understanding rites and music from the viewpoint of the philosophy of nature and mind was formed. Third, music was suggested as the most effective way of reformation. Evil was regarded as very effective for edification because it’s directly related to human emotions, and it was emphasized that one should be reformed in particular with ancient saints’ music[古樂]. Fourth, as the premise of the edification through rites and music, a noble man’s self-cultivation was underlined. which showed the succession of the spirit of self-cultivation and pursuit of others’ well-being(修己安人). Fifth, it tried to recover the original virtuous personality by building human moral character and by turning into goodness through the edification with rites and music, which has the significance in the history of ideas keeping in with Confucius’ and Mencius’ philosophy.
And regarding the characteristics of Yüeh Ji that cannot be found in Xing Zi Ming Chu, first it discussed rites and evil in details and systematically described not only each conflicting concept and quality but also their mutual relation. Second, rites and evil were explained with the logic of Yin and Yang(陰陽). Through this comparative analysis, one aspect of the philosophical trend of Confucian rites and music has been investigated.
