진실과 거짓을 말하고자 하는 의도에 관한 한국인과 미국인 간 문화적 차이: 문화, 태도, 규범적 요인이 의도에 미치는 영향을 중심으로 (Differences between Koreans and Americans on the Intentions to Tell the Truth and Lies: Effects of Culture, Attitudes, and Normative Factors on Intentions)

초록

이 연구는 진실을 말하고자 하는 의도와 거짓을 말하고자 하는 의도 각각에 영향을 미치는 태도･규범적 요인을 중심으로 한국인과 미국인 간 문화적 차이를 알아보고자 했다. 이를 위해 한국인과 미국인 대학생 454명과 415명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시해 문화, 태도, 주관적 규범, 서술적 규범, 명령적 규범이 각각의 의도에 미치는 영향력 및 차이를 살펴보았다. 연구결과 진실을 말하고자 하는 의도･태도의 경우 미국인이 강했고, 거짓말을 하고자 하는 의도･태도의 경우 한국인이 강한 것으로 조사되어 두 문화 간 차이가 드러났다. 진실을 말하려는 의도에서 주관적 규범 인식은 한국인과 미국인의 차이가 없었으나 서술적, 명령적 규범 인식은 미국인이 더 강한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 반면 거짓말하려는 의도의 경우 모든 규범에 있어 두 문화 간 차이가 없었다. 다음으로 말하고자 하는 의도에 미치는 각 요인의 영향력은 진실을 말하고자 하는 의도와 거짓을 말하고자 하는 의도 간 차이가 있었다. 태도와 서술적 규범은 진실을 말하려는 의도와 양의 관계를 보였고, 문화와 태도 간 상호작용 효과가 진실을 말하고자 하는 의도에 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 거짓말을 하고자 하는 의도에는 문화･태도･명령적 규범 각각의 영향력이 나타났는데 문화는 정적 영향을, 태도와 명령적 규범은 부적 영향을 주는 것으로 조사됐다. 이 연구는 기만 연구 분야에서 개인의 진실과 거짓된 말을 하고자 하는 행동의도, 태도, 규범적 인식이 배경적 특수성에 따라 어떤 다른 특징을 보일 수 있는지 그 가능성에 관한 문화의 역할을 더 깊이 이해하도록 도울 수 있다. 또한 이러한 문화적 차이를 살펴봄으로써 실제 커뮤니케이션에 있어 문화적 차이로 인해 발생할 수 있는 상호 간 불필요한 오해를 줄이는 데 실질적 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

This study aims to discover cultural differences in deception by comparing individuals in South Korea and the United States of America for their intentions to lie and tell the truth and examining how attitudes and norm perceptions are related to intentions. Korean (n = 454) and American undergraduates (n = 415) read a potentially-deception-inducing scenario and indicated their intentions, attitudes, subjective norms, descriptive and injunctive norms. The findings showed that Americans showed stronger attitudes and intention to tell the truth than Koreans did and that Koreans showed stronger attitudes and intention to lie than Americans did. Regarding descriptive and injunctive norms, Americans showed stronger perceptions about telling the truth than Koreans did. But there were no cultural differences in all types of norms about lying. Then, there were differences in the factors relating to intention to tell the truth versus intentions to lie. Attitudes and descriptive norm were positively related to intention to tell the truth, but attitudes and injunctive norm were negatively related to intention to lie. Furthermore, Koreans and Americans differed in the factors relating to intention to tell the truth, but not for intention to lie. Attitudes were more strongly and positively related to intention to tell the truth among Koreans than Americans. Culture was positively related to intention to lie, while attitudes, injunctive norms were negatively related. Finally, the finding that factors contributing to intention to lie versus intention to tell the truth were different indicates that intention to lie is not the exact opposite of intention to tell the truth. This research findings contribute to communication knowledge enhancement about cultural differences in intentions to lie and tell the truth and factors influencing them, and furthermore provides a new insight that intention to lie and intention to tell the truth may need to be differently conceptualized and examined. Examination of cultural differences in communication is expected to provide ways to reduce misunderstanding.
