「李謫仙醉草嚇蠻書」 敍事 형성과 渤海 인식 (Formation of the Libai narrative and Recognition of Parhae)

초록

이 글은 이백이 발해에 보내는 답서를 작성하였다는 화본소설 「李謫仙醉草嚇嚇蠻書」의 형성 과정을 다루고있다. 이백 전승은 이백의 발탁, 玄宗의 特遇, 高力士에 의한 脫靴, 蕃書의 해독과 答蕃書의 작성으로 이어지는데 이는 8세기 후반 그의 작품을 집성하면서 쓴 서문이나 그를 추모하는 비문을 통해 전승되기 시작했다.
이백의 전승에 답번서(취초하만서)가 주요 내용 요소를 이루기 시작한 것은 王伯成의 「李太白貶夜郞」이나,『隨唐兩朝史傳』에 수록된 「李太白入掃番書」에서부터 답번 서사가 오롯이 이야기의 중심으로 구성되기 시작한다. 그러나 이 이야기 속 번국은 거란이었다. 거란을 이백의 답번서 대상으로 설정한 데는 거란의 도발을 마주하고 고군분투했던 宋의 불편한 기억을 당대 독자들에게 상기시켜 이백의 전승을 극대화하기 위한 것이었다.
그러나 明代 『警世通言』에 수록된 「이적선취초하만서」에서 답번서의 대상은 거란이 아닌 발해로 변용되었다. 거란, 여진과 몽골에 의한 중국 지배 체제를 불식한 明으로서는 더 이상 거란의 서사가 이백의 전승을 돋보이게 하는 요소가 될 수 없었고 새로운 번국으로 발해가 등장하였다.
이 이야기 속에 등장하는 발해는 당에 사신을 파견하여 고구려의 176개 성의 반환을 요구하였고 당 조정은 高唐 전쟁을 상기하며 대응 방안 마련에 고심한다. 그러나 이백이 취중에 쓴 뛰어난 답번서로 발해의 요구를 일축하였다는 것으로 마무리된다.
이백 전승에 등장한 발해 서사는 중국인의 숙감이 고구려에 그치는 것이 아니라 발해에까지 닿아 있음을 보여준다는 점에서 새로운 시선을 끌기에 충분하다. 이러한 변용은 발해에 대한 중국인의 인식이 오랫동안 내재해왔던 불편한 기억임을 보여주는 단면이기도 하다. 무엇보다 이것이 일반 대중이 즐기던 소설을 구성하는 주요 서사이고 보면 소수의 학자들이 전유하던 역사 인식을 넘어 600여년이 지난 후에도 대중적 감성에 작동되는 내면화된 역사 인식을 이루고 있었다는 점에서 그 의미는 각별하다

This study discusses the formation of the fictionalized story of ‘Li the Banished Immortal Drunkenly Drafts the Document to Daunt the Southen Barbarians李謫仙醉草嚇蠻書’. The Libai李白's transmitted story composes Libai's appointment, the special treatment of the Xuanzong玄宗, the removal of his shoes by Gaolish高力士 , the deciphering of diplomatic document and the reply for that. It began to be transmitted in the late 8th century through prefaces to compilations of his works and inscriptions in his honour.
It was in Wangbocheng王伯成's Litaibai deprecates to Yelang李太白貶夜郞 that the Immortal Drunkenly Drafts the Document began to form a major part of the narrative. And from LiTaibai writes a document standing up李太白入掃番書, the narrative of the reply documant begins to take centre stage. In this story, however, the opponent was Kitan. The choice of the Kitan as the target of Li Bai's reply was intended to maximise the transmission of LiBai by reminding contemporary readers of the uncomfortable memories of the Song宋's struggles in the face of the Kitan's provocations.
However, in the Li the Banished Immortal Drunkenly Drafts the Document to Daunt the Southen Barbarians in the Comprehensive Words to Admonish the Word警世通言, the opponent has not ever Kitan, but Parhae.
The Ming dynasty, which had overthrown Kitan, Jurchens, and the Mongol domination of China, could no longer use the narrative of Kitan to highlight the transmission of Libai, and Parhae emerged as the new being. This transformation also shows that the Chinese perception of Parhae is an uncomfortable memory that has been embedded for a long time.
In this story, Parhae sends an envoy to Tang to demand the return of 176 castles in Koguryo, and Tang recalled the war between Koguryo and them and struggles to come up with a response strategy. The story ends with LiBai's brilliant reply, written in drunken, dismissing Balhae's demands.
The Parhae’s narrative in Libai’s transmission deserves new attention because it demonstrates that the Chinese people's sense of history was not limited to Koguryo but also reached to the Parhae. Above all, it is significant that this was the main narrative that constitutes a novel enjoyed by the general public, and that it has gone beyond the historical perception of a few scholars to form an internalised historical perception that operates on the popular sensibility even after 600 years.
