증언 자료를 활용한 부·마 항쟁 수업 (Study on the History Class of Pusan-Masan Democratic Uprising Utilizing Witness Commentaries)

초록

본고에서는 증언 자료를 활용한 부·마 항쟁 수업 방안을 모색하였다. 부·마 항쟁과 같이 자료가 부족하거나 왜곡된 역사적 사건을 다룰 경우 증언 자료가 어떤 유용함이 있는지 검토해보고자하였다. 역사적 증언의 개념과 범주를 설정하고, 부·마 항쟁 수업에서 학습할 수 있는 요소들이무엇인지 제시하였다. 이를 바탕으로 실제 수업을 통해 증언 자료의 효과를 검증해보았다.
부·마 항쟁 수업에서는 참여자들의 구술증언, 재판상의 공판조서 및 피의자 조서, 항소이유서, 언론 인터뷰 등을 증언 자료로 활용하였다. 학습 요소로는 부·마 항쟁의 지방사적 배경, 부· 마 항쟁의 주체와 성격, 부·마 항쟁 참여자들의 내면’을 설정하였으며, 고등학교 학생들을 대상으로 수업을 진행하였다.
증언 자료는 역사적 사실을 파악하는 하나의 사료로 주관적인 경우가 많다. 또한 인간의 감정이 드러나며 구체적이고 생생한 목소리로 사건을 전달하기 때문에 행위자의 생각과 의도를 고려해야 한다. 이런 점을 고려하여 본고에서는 사료비판과 감정이입적 역사이해의 과정을 종합한증언 자료 활용 절차를 제시하였다. 이 절차에 따라 실연된 부·마 항쟁 수업에서 증언 자료의 유용성을 검증할 수 있었다.
증언 자료는 부·마 항쟁 당시 상황을 학습자들에게 생생하고 구체적으로 보여주었다. 부·마항쟁 당시의 마산의 분위기, 시위대와 경찰들의 대치 모습, 언론보도에 나타나지 않은 시위 장면, 참여자 일부가 겪은 체포와 고문 등의 증언은 학습자가 실제 사건의 현장에 있는 효과를 주었다.
증언 자료는 부·마 항쟁이 민중들에 의한 유신체제에 저항한 민주화 운동이었음을 확인할 수 있는 기회를 제공하였다. 당시의 언론보도와 정부 발표에는 부·마 항쟁을 불순분자들의 소요사태로간주하고 있었지만, 참여자들은 부·마 항쟁이 일반 시민들의 민주화 운동이었다고 증언하고 있었다. 증언 자료를 활용한 역사 수업에서는 학습자가 부·마 항쟁 증언자들의 감정을 자신의 감정으로 끌고 와서 역사적 존재로서의 자신을 발견할 수 있었다. 부·마 항쟁 참여자들이 우리 지역의인물이며, 현재 같은 시간과 공간에서 살아간다는 점이 학습자와 역사적 인물과의 거리를 좁히는데 효과적이었다. 부·마 항쟁 증언 자료에는 지방색이 드러나는 인물, 지명, 사투리 등이 드러나기 때문에 친숙함을 느낌과 동시에 지방민들의 시각을 접할 수 있다. 지역에 대한 관심과 애정이고스란히 표현되는 내용에서 자연스럽게 지역정체성을 함양하는 기회를 만들 수 있었다.
증언 자료를 활용한 부·마 항쟁 수업은 지방의 특수성을 반영할 수 있는 현대사를 발굴하게 하였고, 지역정체성 함양에 효과가 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 역사 학습의 목적을 달성하는 데 증언자료 활용이 유의미한 작업임을 인식하는 계기가 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

This study aims to investigate teaching methods using witness commentaries in teaching Pusan-Masan Democratic Uprising and to verify usefulness of using this material in the history class. At first, definition and categorization of witness commentaries were clarified and teaching elements which are applicable to the history class were suggested. Finally, the effectiveness of witness commentaries in the light of teaching material was attempted to be proved through the application of them in the history class.
Following evidences were used in the history class for the high school students, including oral testimony, trial records, protocol of a suspect-examination, statement of appeal, interview with media. As for the learning elements, local historical background of Pusan-Masan Democratic uprising, subjects and characters of the movement, and inner state of demonstrators were set up.
Witness commentaries as one of the historical material used to grasp the historical events tend to be subjective. In addition, because of the emotional elements within them, careful consideration needs to be given when analyzing thoughts and intention of the witness.
In the consideration of this aspect, the application procedure of witness commentaries synthesizing the Quellenkritik and empathetic understanding of history was presented in this study. In the class conducted according to this procedure, the effectiveness of witness commentaries in teaching the Pusan-Masan Democratic uprising could be verified.
This material seems to be useful in the respect of providing students with the circumstance of at that time vividly and specifically. The specific description by witnesses of atmosphere of the city of the time, the confrontation situation between demonstrators and police, the scene unreleased in the media, and arrest and torture experienced by some demonstrators helped students to feel as if they were in the historical moments of the time. The fact that the Pusan-Masan democratic uprising was democratic movements by people against 'Yushin regime' could be confirmed in this study. Although at that time the reports of the media and announcement of government said that the movement was riot provoked by impure elements, evidences that the Pusan-Masan democratic movement was a prodemocratic movement initiated by common people could be found in this study. This history class applying witness commentaries seems to enable students to recognize themselves as a historical being by identifying their feeling with that of witnesses and having empathy for the witnesses. This application seems to be effective to close the distance between the students and witnesses in that the students are the contemporaries of the witnesses. In addition, name of the place, dialects etc. helped students to feel familiarity and understand the perspectives of local people about the movement. Also, interviews of witnesses who showed affection toward the local communities seem to help students cultivate the local identity.
In conclusion, it could be said that the history class of Pusan-Masan democratic uprising using witness commentaries excavated the modern history reflecting local specialty and helped to cultivate the local identities of students. This study could prove the possibilities of witness commentaries to be meaningful mode of teaching in achieving the objectives of history learning.
