시집살이요의 마음다스림에 관한 미학적 탐구 (Study of Aesthetic Consciousness of “Sijibsari” Songs)

초록

시집살이요는 17세기 후반 이후 시집살이하는 며느리들이 스스로 창출하고 불러온 노래들이다. 조선시대 성리학 중심의 유교영향은 평민의 사회에 이르기까지 적장자, 부계중심의 가족제도를 뿌리내리게 하였으며 그러한 사회에서 여성들은 삼종지도라는 이념과 규범 안의 어려운 삶을 견뎌내야 했다. 이전과 달리 여성들은 결혼 후 시집살이라는 가혹한 삶의 환경에 놓이게 된 것이다. 시집살이에서 최약자 처지의 며느리들이 삶을 대하며 생성된 정감을 노래한 것이 ‘시집살이요’인데 시집식구들과의 갈등, 학대 등으로 인한 역한 정감이 노래를 통해 표출되고 있다. 아래는 시집살이요에 있어서 기본적 유형의 주제들이다.
1) 시집살이에 대한 두려움, 근심2) 남편의 외도와 이를 방조하는 시어머니3) 억울한 누명4) 시집식구들의 학대5) 과도한 노동으로 인한 고통, 배고픔6) 친정어머니에 대한 원망과 친정식구들에 대한 그리움7) 시집식구들에 대한 비웃음시집살이요의 특징 중 하나는 왜 그러한 일이 발생하고 있는 지에 대하여 객관적인 시각이 결여되어 있으며 며느리들의 시각에 의해서만 일방적으로 노래되고 있다는 것이다. 하지만 이 노래들이 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 시집살이하는 며느리들에게 대를 이어 창출되고 재창조되어 전해왔다는 것은 그녀들이 겪은 시집살이라는 삶의 공통된 마음경험과 정감을 담고 있었기 때문이다. 이 노래들의 향수를 통해 그녀들은 상처받은 마음을 치유하고 나아가 마음을 다스릴 수 있었던 것이다. 시집살이요는 마음다스림에 용이한 노래구조를 가지고 있다. 기존의 노래를 변형하여 개인적인 삶의 정감을 실어내기 쉬운 향수방식이 그것이다. 이렇게 기존의 유형을 변형하여 재창조한 노래를 ‘각편’이라고 한다. 며느리들은 각편을 만듦으로써 그녀들의 개인적인 정감을 외화 해 낼 수 있었으며 나아가 마음을 다스리고 삶의 어려움을 이겨내었던 것이다.
본 연구에 인용된 자료들은 『구비문학대계』와 『한국서사민요의 날실과 씨실』에 시집살이요의 기본유형으로 분류되어 있는 노래들에 기초하고 있으며, 2편 이상의 각편을 가지고 있는 기본유형의 노래들을 중심으로 하였다. 『구비문학대계』의 경우 20개 기본유형 노래들의 바탕에서 기능하는 기본범주의 미의식을 분석해 보면 드물게 미의식들이 공존하는 경우가 있었지만, 16개의 기본유형의 노래들이 “비극미”를 바탕으로 하고 있었으며, 2개의 경우 “골계미”에 바탕하고 있었는데 이것은 시집살이하는 며느리들의 삶에서 생성된 정감이 순한 것 보다는 역한 것이 대부분이라는 것을 시사하고 있는 것이다. 그리고『한국서사민요의 날실과 씨실』의 자료에서도 유사한 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.
한편, 미의식의 네가지 기본범주에 속하는 “숭고미”, “우아미”에 바탕하는 노래들이 시집살이요의 20개 기본유형에 없다는 것도 당대에 향유된 다른 계층의 노래들과 비교해 볼 때 특이한 점이라 하겠는데, 이는 시집살이에서 순한 정감들이 생성되기 어려웠다는 점을 반영한 것이기도 하다. 노래란 해당 계층의 공통된 마음경험과 정감이 표현되었을 때 유행, 확산된다는 것을 말하는 대목이라 하겠다.
기본유형의 노래들에서 대부분 바탕을 이루고 있는 “비극미”는 각편에서 더욱 적극적으로 긍정적 변이를 이루며 “골계미”, “우아미”, “숭고미”의 미의식으로 공존하거나 전환되고 있다. 이를 통하여 며느리들은 마음의 상처를 치유하고 달래며 시집살이의 어려움을 이겨낼 수 있는 마음다스림의 미의식으로 승화해 낼 수 있었던 것이다. 민요에서 시집살이요의 각편이 가장 많은 이유는 이렇듯 마음다스림의 효율성에 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서도 각편의 유용함을 주목하고 있다.
시집살이요는 연행자가 공통으로 마음경험한 내용을 나의 사연인 듯 혹은 나의 정감을 스스로 만든 각편을 통해 주로 읊조리는 방식의 노래양식으로 불러냄으로써 내면의 슬픔(추)을 고백, 발산의 심미적 경험에 의해 미로 극복해 낸다. 이러한 시집살이요의 독특한 향수방식은 미의식을 경유하며 마음의 상처와 분노를 치유, 조절하고 궁극적으로는 시집살이의 어려움을 이겨 내게 하여 삶을 긍정적이게 하는 독특한 문화를 만들어내게 된 것이라 하겠다.

영어초록

“Sijibsari” songs have been sung by many Korean daughters-in-law since the end of the 17th century. During the late Chosun Dynasty, the impact of Sung Confucianism settled its patrilineal family system into the center of the commons; the clan rule system forced most women to live hard lives under the ideas and norms of “Samjongjido”. Women usually had hard lives in the harsh environments after marriage in the home of the parents-in-law. This is called “Sijibsari”. “Sijibsari” songs, as the name implies, told stories of women who suffered from “Sijibsari” itself. For example, the women may have suffered from several hardships including abuse from their in-laws. Their state of emotion, created as sentiments, was expressed in the songs.
These are the following topics in the basic types of the “Sijibsari” songs:1) Anxiety about living in the home of their in-laws,2) Husband’s extra-marital affairs and her mother-in-law ignoring the affairs,3) False accusation,4) Abuse from in-laws,5) Physical suffering due to excessive labor and hunger,6) Resentment of her mother-in-law and longing for her own mother,7) Mocking from the in-laws.
As one of the characteristics of these songs, they are told and sang through the eyes and perspective of daughters-in-laws. There is a lack of objective perspective on some of the reasons why certain things happened in the context of the lyrics. Almost everything is unfair to the daughters-in-law. As an example, the in-laws can be very harsh on minor mistakes done by the daughters-in-law.
No one understands them or takes their sides. Although they worked very hard all day long, the in-laws always mistreated them. They were always hungry, and couldn’t get enough sleep due to their long work days.
The reason that these songs have been passed down orally from generation to generation might be that they shared the common miserable experiences of the “Sijibsari” that permeates these songs. Many times, their troubled hearts were able to be healed by singing these songs, and the lyrics were improvised based on their real life stories. This is called “GacPyun.” The daughters-in-law were able to express their pain and agony through the "GacPyun" of the “Sijibsari” songs, and this helped them to survive throughout the “Sijibsari”.
The songs that are listed in the “Gubimunhakdaegye”, “Hankook Seosaminyoui Nalsilgwa Ssisil” are used in this study as data. There are twenty songs that have two or more “GacPyun” as representative types of songs. From the analysis of the aesthetics of these twenty songs, it was found that as many as sixteen songs were based on “Bigeukmi.” Therefore it can be said that the “Bigeukmi” is a universal sense of beauty as an aesthetic phenomenon that is experienced in the creation and performance of “Sijibsari” songs. And only two out of these twenty representative songs show the “Golgyemi”. The fact that there is no song based on either “Sunggomi” or “Wooami” of the four basic categories seems to show the women’s rather bitter experiences rankled in their hearts. There is also a form of a unique aesthetic consciousness that can be easily seen in the “Sijibsari” songs so that they can be distinguished from other types of songs. Most of the basic types of songs are based on “Bigeukmi”, however, it should be pointed out that both the type of “Bigeukmi” with the “Golgyemi” and the type of “Bigeukmi” with the “Wooami” exist in the many songs. This type can be found predominantly in the “GacPyun”. “Bigeukmi” is easily visible from most of the basic types of songs, but it can be mutated to the aesthetic consciousness of “Golgye”, “Wooa” or “Sunggo” through “GacPyun”. For example, the positive variations in the “Gacpyun” can bring a transformation of aesthetic consciousness. Furthermore, they will be able to heal the heartaches of the daughters-in-law and encourage them to put up with their difficult lives dealing with their parents-in-law.
In the “Sijibsari” song’s performance, daughters-in-law can easily replace the existing song lyrics with their own experiences. It has been generalized in their performances, and this style of performance is unique. They express their problems and sadness metaphorically or directly through “Sijibsari” songs so that they can relieve their agony and heartaches. It is clear that this whole process of expressing their agony and heartaches in the “Sijibsari” songs eventually led the women to a heightened level of managing their hardships during their “Sijibsari.”
