초록

이 논문의 연구목적은 1960년대 문화방송 라디오 드라마 ‘전설따라 삼천리’가 차지하는 문화적 위상을 고찰하는 데 있다. 통시적 관점에서 검증되어야 하기에, 1920~30년대 『동아일보』가 기획하였던 전설연재물을 비교 대상으로 정하였다. 『동아일보』의 전설연재물, 문화방송의 라디오 드라마 ‘전설따라 삼천리’는 시대 및 수용 상황, 그리고 전달 매체는 달랐지만, 둘의 문화적 위상과 영향력은 대단히 유사하다. 즉 신문이라는 인쇄매체와 라디오라는 전파매체, 읽기라는 시각적 수용과 듣기라는 청각적 수용의 상황, 일제강점기와 해방 이후라는 시대적 상황은 달랐지만, 전설로써 우리 민족의 전통정신과 정서를 발굴하고 부흥시키자는 지점에서 상통한다. 『동아일보』가 전설연재물을 기획하여 민족운동을 하였다면, 문화방송은 ‘전설따라 삼천리’ 방송을 통해 대중문화 운동을 했던 것이다. 또한 ‘전설따라 삼천리’는 『동아일보』의 전설연재물이 강조하였던 증거물, 그리고 ‘귀신과 신불(神佛)의 세계, 자연의 세계, 인간의 세계 등 전설의 범주를 더욱 구체화하였다는 점에서, 둘은 시대를 뛰어넘는 상호 연관성을 밀접하게 보여준다. 한편, 문화방송의 ‘전설따라 삼천리’는 음악 및 효과음의 적절한 사용, 아나운서-해설자-성우들의 층위 구분과 그에 따른 극적 전개, 핵심 내용 전달 위주의 편극(編劇) 등 3가지 점에서 고유한 특징들을 만들어 냈고, 이것들은 이후 ‘전설을 소재로 영화’나 텔레비전 드라마 전설의 고향’에 크게 영향을 미쳤다. 음악 및 효과음의 적절한 사용은 ‘소리 서사’로의 확장 가능성을 열어주었고, 해설자-성우들의 층위 구분과 그에 따른 극적 전개는 ‘극 해설’이라는 클리셰를 만들고 다중적 목소리의 힘을 느끼게 해 주었다. 또한 핵심 내용 전달 위주의 편극은 문화치유적 글쓰기로 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 제시해 주었다는 점에서 문화적 의의를 가진다.

영어초록

The study examines the cultural status of the 1960s cultural broadcasting radio drama Three thousand miles following the legend. To understand this from a diachronic perspective, the legendary serials planned by Dongailbo in the 1920s and 1930s were selected as the subject of comparison. Dongailbo's legendary serial and Munhwa Broadcasting's radio drama Three thousand miles following the legend were set in different eras, acceptance, and delivery media, but their cultural status and influence are very similar. In other words, although the media used-newspaper and the radio-are very different, as are the visual reception of reading and auditory reception of listening, and the times of Japanese colonial rule and post-liberation, they share their aim of discovering and reviving the traditional spirit and emotions of our people through legends. While Dongailbo launched a national movement by planning legendary serials, Munhwa Broadcasting began a popular culture movement through the broadcast of Three thousand miles following the legend. In addition, Three thousand miles following the legend further specified the evidence emphasized in Dongailbo's legend series and the categories of legends such as "the world of gods(Includes ghosts) and Buddha, the world of nature, and the world of humans." In this respect, the two show a close interconnection that transcends time. Meanwhile, the radio drama Three thousand miles following the legend has three unique characteristics: appropriate use of music and sound effects, division of the announcer-commentator-voice actors into different levels and the resulting dramatic development, and polarization focused on conveying key content. These three characteristics later had a great influence on "movies based on legends" and television dramas such as Hometown of Legends. The appropriate use of music and sound effects opened up the possibility of expansion into "sound narrative", and the division of layers between narrator and voice actors and the resulting dramatic development created the cliché of "play commentary" and made one feel the power of multiple voices. In addition, the polarization focused on conveying core content has cultural significance in that it suggests the possibility of using it as cultural healing writing.
