羅州伏岩里3號墳의 區劃築造 (The Compartment Construction of Naju Bogam-ri Tomb No. 3)

초록

이 논문은 나주 복암리3호분(羅州伏岩里3號墳)의 구획축조방식(區劃築造方式)에 관한 연구이다. 이 고분은 상부가증축된 방대형의 대형 성토분(大形盛土墳)으로, 그 안에서는 근 4백 년 동안에 조성된 삼국시대 매장유구 41기가 발굴조사되었다.
고대의 대형분은 많은 인력에 의해 구축된 대규모 토목공사에 해당하므로 예정된 형태로 기간 내 체계적으로 축조하는 데는 여러 가지 기획과 방식이 필요하였다. 그중에서 작업할 범위를 여러 구역으로 나누고 거기에 맞추어 배분된인력들이 맡은 구역별로 작업하는 이른바 구획축조방식은 이미 영남지방의 여러 대형분에서 밝혀져 있다.
복암리3호분의 구획축조방식에 관하여 발굴보고서와 도록을 면밀히 살펴본 결과 ’96석실묘(石室墓)의 즙석상 석재군(葺石狀石材群), 방대형 성토층(方臺形盛土層), 분정 부석(墳頂敷石)에 각기 적용되어 있음을 알게 되었다. 그중에서 성토층의 경우 단면 내 노출된 구획지점들과 이색점토대(異色粘土帶) 등 일부 구획요소들이 확인되었으나 구획된방향이나 구획 수는 알 수 없었다. 이러한 구획요소를 통해 즙석상 석재군과 분정 부석은 모두 방사상으로 구획되었고 구역 수는 전자가 12구역, 후자가 18구역으로 파악되었다.
이와 같이 복암리3호분에는 분명한 구획축조방식이 적용되었다는 사실과 일부 구체적인 구획 양상도 밝혀짐으로써호남지역은 물론 영남지방과 일본열도의 고분 축조방식 등에 관한 비교 연구의 폭을 넓힐 수 있게 되었다. 아울러 향후 발굴조사방법에도 구획방식과 관련된 사항이 필요불가결한 조사부분임을 인식하는 계기가 될 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper examines the compartment construction method used at Bogam-ri Tomb No. 3,in Naju, Jeollanam-do, which is a huge, square mounded earthen tomb with an extended superstructure. It contains forty-one burial structures which were constructed over approximately 400 years during the Three Kingdoms period.
The construction of such a massive ancient tomb is comparable to a massive public works project. It involved numerous laborers who were divided into teams for each specific compartment. Completing construction on time was a major challenge in terms of project management; it required extraordinary coordination, intricate design work, and rigorous planning. It also entailed a great deal of specialization – teams of laborers were allocated to each compartment and given tasks specific to each compartment. This method, known as compartment construction, was used at many other large tombs of Yeongnam Province.
A careful study of the excavation report and catalogue of Bogam-ri Tomb No. 3, published in 1996, reveals that teams of laborers were allocated to each compartment to complete tasks such as laying down the paving stones on the slope of the tomb, stacking the earthen layers of the square mound, and laying stones on the top of the tomb. The earthen layers reveal that work was carried out in separate compartments, as is evidenced by the demarcated spots which can be seen in cross-section and the bands of different colored earth which were laid down by separate teams. However, it was not possible to ascertain the direction and number of compartments. It was possible, on the other hand, to determine the direction and number of compartments involved in laying down paving stones on the slope of the tomb and stones on the top of the tomb. The compartments were laid out in a direction radiating out from the center. The number of compartments involved was twelve for laying down paving stones on the slope of the tomb, and eighteen for laying down stones on the top of the tomb.
These specific examples, which illustrate the use of the compartment construction method at Bogam-ri Tomb No. 3, make it possible to undertake broader comparative studies on the construction methods of ancient tombs, not only from the Honam region, but also from the Yeongnam region and Japan. They also demonstrate that extensive planning and organization of labor must be considered in all future excavations of tombs.
