덕수리 불미 조상신 신앙 고찰 (A Study on the Belief of the Deoksuri ‘Bulmi Ancestral God’)

초록

본고는 서귀포시 안덕면 덕수리의 ‘불미 조상신’ 신앙 고찰을 통하여 제주도에 전승하는 ‘도깨비 신앙’을 ‘조상신 신앙’의 하나의 유형으로 이해할 수 있을 것인가에 대한 논의이다.
덕수리는 제주도 도깨비신앙을 대표하는 지역 중 하나이다. ‘불미업’과의 연관성이 주요한 근거가 되는데, 현재 마을 공동체 차원의 의례는 남아 있지 않고, 본향당인 <광정당>과 <축일당> 본풀이만이 전해지고 있다. 주요한 점은 두 당 모두 ‘도체비신’을 모시는 당은 아니었다는 것이다. 일부 자료에 덕수리의 옛지명인 ‘새당’을 <광정당> 이후의 본향당으로 하여 본풀이를 전하고 있으나, 이는 사가집 굿의 신청 제차 말명으로 정리하는 것이 더욱 타당한 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 덕수리 불미 공동체는 고사(告祀) 형식으로 ‘불미마당’을 열었던 ‘불미 주인’이 행하는 의례만을 남기고 있다. 이외 공동체 차원의 신앙 전승을 찾아 보기는 어렵다. ‘불미마당’이 갖는 비연속성과 비고정성에서 기인하는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 생업공동체이긴 하지만 상시성과 지속성을 담보하지 못하는 특성을 갖기 때문이다. 이러한 특성으로 인하여 특정한 직업 수호신이나 그에 대한 신앙이 형성되지 못한 것으로 이해할 수 있다.
덕수리의 대표적인 민간 신앙은 송씨 집안의 조상신인 ‘뒷하르방’이다. 집에서 일하던 하인이 후손이 없이 죽을 경우 주인집에서 그를 집안 조상신으로 모셨던 경우로 제주 무속 조상신 유형 중 하나이다. 이는 덕수리 근방의 ‘도체비당’과의 연관성을 바탕으로 ‘도체비신’을 수용하여 전승해 온 것으로 이해할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper aims to examine how the ‘Bulmi Ancestral God’ belief transmitted in Deoksuri, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-Si can be positioned within the scope of Jeju Island’s shamanistic beliefs. This begins with the question of whether the ‘Dokkaebi belief’ transmitted in Jeju Island can be understood as a type of ‘ancestral god belief.’ The question is whether the deity called ‘Dokkaebi’ can become an ‘ancestral god.’ Deoksuri is one of the representative regions of Jeju Island’s Dokkaebi belief. The connection with ‘Bulmi’ is the main basis, but there is currently no remaining tradition of the village community-level Dangsin belief. Only the ‘bonpuri’ of the <Gwangjeongdang> and <Chugildang> remains and has been handed down. The main point is that neither <Gwangjeongdang> nor <Chukildang> were shrines that worshipped ‘Dochebi’. Some sources say that the shrine with the same name as the old place name of Deoksuri, ‘Saedang,’ is the <Deoksu Bonhyangdang>. However, if we analyze the ‘bonpuri’ of ‘Saedang’ in detail, it is more reasonable to organize it as ‘the Sagajip Gut’, rather than the bonhyangdang rite.
The ‘Je’ that is transmitted as a ritual at the level of the Deoksuri Bulmi community was a very brief sacrificial offering with no specific name, and was performed by the ‘Bulmi owner’ who opened the ‘Bulmi Madang.’ It is difficult to find any other religious transmissions at the level of the Bulmi community. This can be understood as being due to the discontinuity and non-fixity of the ‘Bulmi Madang’. Although it can be called a community of occupations, it has the characteristic of not being able to guarantee constancy and continuity. However, it was confirmed that the ritual of worshipping the deity as ‘the ancestral god’ remains in the Seochon area of ​​Jeju Island when a household with an ancestor who participated in the ‘Bulmi Madang’ performs a ritual. The most strongly transmitted belief in Deoksuri is the ancestral deity of the Song family, ‘Duitharbang’. In Jeju shamanism, where a simple ritual is performed for a servant who died without descendants at the master’s house and the servant is worshipped as the household ancestral deity. However, it can be understood that the deity of ‘Dochebi’ was accepted and passed down based on the connection with ‘Dochebidang’ among the bonhyangdangs in Seochon, Jeju Island near Deoksuri. The representative evidence is that ‘wildfire’ is transmitted as the core motif of several tales related to ‘Duitharbang’ or ‘Songchip Dochebi’ in Deoksuri.
