무령왕릉 묘지석의 제작 과정과 배치 변화와의 관계 (The Relationship between the Production Process and the Change of Arrangement of the Epitaph Plaque of King Muryeong’s Tomb)

초록

1971년 무령왕릉에서 무령왕과 왕비지석이 발굴되었는데 당시 연도 바닥에 놓여있었다. 무령왕이 모셔지던 1차 상장례 당시에 지석이 어디에 배치되어 있었는지에는 관심이 없었을 뿐 아니라 지석의 배치가 내용 파악에 얼마나 중요한가를 의식하지 않았다. 또한 묘지석을 구성하고 있는 왕지석․왕비지석․간지도·매지권을 각각으로 인식하고, 이들이 연결된 문건일 가능성은 염두에 두지 않았다.
이글에서는 비록 묘지석 각각에 제목은 붙어있지 않지만 내용상 연관성을 가지고 있을 가능성 타진에중점을 두고 접근하였다. 그 시작으로 먼저 1차 상장례 때에 제작된 게 명확한 왕지석과 매지권을 대상으로 하였다. 지석의 마지막 ‘(입지立志)여좌(如左)’의 ‘좌’그리고 매지권의 앞부분‘우일건(右一 件)’의 ‘우’에 초점을 맞추었다. ‘좌’는 다음 문건인 매지권을 가리키는 것으로 해석하여 ‘다음’ 으로, ‘우’는 지석의 좌에 대구가 되는 ‘앞의’로 해석하고 왕지석 즉 무령왕 상장례 문건을 의미하는것으로 보았다. 이는 전통적 문건에서 문장을 작성할 때 자주 사용하는 하나의 양식이라고 본 것이다. 이러한 해석은 무령왕릉이 발견될 당시의 묘지석 배치에서도 그대로 성립된다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.
이어서 묘지석들에 나타나있는 계선을 분석함으로써 왕지석은 매지권과, 왕비지석은 간지도와 함께작성되었을 가능성을 보였다. 글자들을 대비시켜 분석함으로써 왕지석과 매지권은 1차 상장례 때에 함께 작성되었음이 드러났다. 또 언제 작성되었는지 문제가 되는 간지도의 경우 2차 상장례 때 왕비지석과함께 작성되었을 가능성이 매우 크다는 사실을 밝혔다.
이런 일련의 과정을 통해서 왕지석 뒷면에 간지도를, 매지권 뒷면에 왕비지석을 배치할 수 밖에 없었던 까닭도 추론하였다. 이렇게 함으로써 2차 상장례가 있은 다음에 배치된 묘지석들에서도 ‘좌’ ‘우’ 등의 연관성은 그대로 유지됨을 알 수 있었다. 동시에 왕지석과 왕비지석을 읽는 시점은 매지권과 간지도를 읽는 시점 방향과 다르다는 사실도 밝혔다. 그 이면에 간지도에서 글자가 새겨지지 않고 비워둔 방향을 원용하여, 간지도는 왕릉 영역이라는 왕과 왕비의 공간과 명부세계 신들의 공간과의 경계를상징한다고 해석하였다.

영어초록

The Epitaph Plaques of the king and the queen were excavated at King Muryeong’s Tomb in 1971. They were found on the entrance passage at the time. No attention was given to the position of the Epitaph Plaque during the funeral of King Muryeong and how important the arrangement of the Epitaph Plaque is for understanding the content was not recognized. Also, each Epitaph Plaques were taken as individual pieces without considering the possibility that they might form a single document together.
This study placed emphasis on examine the possibility of having a connection in content in approaching the subject matter. First, the Epitaph Plaque(King) and the land purchase record were examined. The focus was given to ‘Jwa (左)’ from the last line of the epitaph, ‘Ipjiyeojwa (立志如左)’ and ‘Wu (右)’ from the beginning of the land purchase record, ‘Wuilgeon (右 一件).’ ‘Jwa’ was interpreted as ‘next’ for it was understood as it indicates the next document, the land purchase record, and ‘Wu’ as ‘previous’ as the antithesis of ‘Jwa’ indicating the Epitaph Plaque (king). This is the format often used traditionally when writing documents.
The ruled lines that appear on the Epitaph Plaques were analyzed to suggest the possibility that the Epitaph Plaque(King) was created with the land purchase record and the Epitaph Plaque(Queen), with the drawing of the sexagenary cycle. It was clarified that the Epitaph Plaque(King) and the land purchase record were created during the primary funeral ceremony by contrasting the letters. For the drawing of the sexagenary cycle, for which when it was created is an issue, this study revealed that it is very likely that it was created with the Epitaph Plaque(Queen).
The reasons they had to place the drawing of the sexagenary cycle on the back side of the Epitaph Plaque(King) and Epitaph Plaque(Queen), the land purchase record, were also inferred. At the same time, it was made clear that the reading direction for the Epitaph Plaque(King) and Epitaph Plaque(Queen) is different from that for the land purchase record and the drawing of the sexagenary cycle. It was interpreted that the drawing of the sexagenary cycle symbolizes the king’s tomb, the spaces of the king and queen, and the space and border of the gods of the other world by quoting the direction in which letters are not inscribed on the drawing of the sexagenary cycle.
