비정상적 재고자산의 변화가 주식수익률에 미치는 영향 (The Impacts of the Abnormal Inventory Changes on Market Performance)

초록

본 연구는 1998년 이후 주식수익률이 당기의 재고자산 변화에 민감하게 반응하는 정도를 살펴보았다. 본 연구는 재고자산의 변화가 경영자의 기회주의적인 이익관리 의도를 반영하여 기업성과의 내재가치를 저하시킨다고 가정하였다.
본 연구는 과거 12개월 동안의 월간 초과수익률을 누적한 누적초과수익률 CAR 뿐만 아니라, 한국증권시장에서 장기성과 측정모형의 설정 오류가 없어 통계적 신뢰성을 확보할 수 있는 보유기간초과수익률 (BHAR)도 측정하여 결과의 강건성을 기하고자 하였다. 재고자산 변화가 시장의 초과수익률에 미치는 영향력을 검증하기 위해 기업의 비기대이익(CEARN)을 통제한 후 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 재고자산의 감소는 CAR과 BHAR에 유의 혹은 유의하지 않는 정(+)의 설명관계를 보이는 것과 대조적으로, 재고자산의 증가는 CAR과 BHAR에 매우 유의한 부(-)의 설명관계를 보였다. 이는 시장에서 재고자산의 증가를 통한 이익보고를 호의적으로 인식하지 않는다는 것을 의미한다.

영어초록

There are substantial evidences that managers engage in earnings management. These intentional intervention in the financial reporting can occur not only through accounting methods, but also through operational decisions like acceleration of sales etc.
Under these circumstances, there is an argument that manufacturing firms can also manipulate financial reporting by changing inventory level. They can manipulate income by producing in excess of the quantity needed to meet current period demand, thereby allocating part of current period fixed manufacturing overhead costs from cost of goods sold to inventory. If managers intentionally change the inventory level, this opportunistic behavior can lower the firm value. In case, the rise in the inventory level can sign the earnings management to the market. But it cannot exclude the possibility that managers are to increase the inventory level in anticipation of sales growth.
This paper explores whether market regards the change of the inventory level as earnings management or not. we analyze a total of 5,400 pooling data, which is 597 manufacturing firms for 10 years.
To examine the market reaction, we measure the market performance by buy and holding abnormal returns(BHAR) as well as cumulative abnormal returns(CAR). Then, we regressed the change of the inventory on the market performance after controlling firm's unexpected returns(CEARN). Particularly, we explore the market reaction on the rise of the inventory level utilizing the interaction variable between CPAI and CPAIdy.
The result shows that the rise of the inventory level have a significantly negative effect on the market performance. But there is no any significant effect in case of the decline of the inventory level. This implies that market takes a unfavorable view of the earnings management through the change of the inventory level.
