초록

황해도 <배뱅이굿>은 한국전쟁으로 인해 북한에서 월남한 고(故) 양소운에 의해 전승되었다. 양소운류 <배뱅이굿>의 연행적 특징은 황해도 무속 진오귀굿의 베가르기에 해당하는 의례적 연기가 수반된다는 것이다. 공연에서 배뱅이 진오귀굿의 베가르기 연행을 할 때 이미 청관중은 이것이 박수무당의 사기 행각의 일부임을 알고 있다. 그러나 배뱅이의 해원(解冤)을 도와 극락으로의 천도를 기원하는 의례가 형식적으로나마 이루어지면서 사기극을 통한 긴장감과 유희성이 굿을 통해 억울하고 슬픈 감정을 풀고 두루 복을 기원하는 한국 민간신앙의 정서로 이행되게 된다. 이에 황해도 <배뱅이굿>은 다른 배뱅이굿처럼 재밌고 슬프기도 하지만, 한편 세속적이지만은 않으며 성스러움에까지 나아간다는 점에서 변별적인 지점을 가진다.
<배뱅이굿> 서사에 참여한 청관중들은 삶과 죽음, 참과 거짓, 사랑과 미움, 연민과 혐오, 원한과 해원(解寃) 등 인간사의 다양한 대립적 면모를 유희성, 예술성, 종교성의 측면에서 다각적으로 경험하게 된다. 박수무당의 사기행각인 가짜 굿이 가족과 마을 사람들 모두가 완전히 믿게 되는 배뱅이의 진짜 진오귀굿이 되는 것처럼, 실제의 공연도 허구적 서사를 바탕으로 하지만 무속신앙의 의례적 연행을 통해 제의적 성격을 가지게 된다. 청관중들이 경험하는 ‘속임’과 ‘속음’의 연행은 진짜와 가짜, 표면과 이면, 허구와 진실이라는 대립적 간극의 경계를 넘나든다. 이와 같이 이야기상의 가상의 굿을 텍스트와 컨텍스트 맥락의 다차원적 측면에서 다양하게 감상할 수 있다는 점에서 양소운류 황해도 <배뱅이굿>만의 특별한 예술적 가치를 발견할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study investigates Baebaeng-i-gut, a traditional performance in the Hwanghae Province, as performed by the late Yang So-un, who defected from North Korea, due to the Korean War. The primary characteristic of Yang So-un’s style of performance is that it is accompanied by a ceremonial performance of a shaman ritual (gut) involving the cutting and tearing of white hemp cloth (Baengmokcheon), which symbolizes the road to the afterlife according to the customs of Jinogui-gut, the shaman faith of the Hwanghae Province. During the performance of cutting the hemp cloth in the gut to soothe Baebaeng-i’s soul and send it to heaven, the audience is already aware that it is part of the fraudulent practices of the male shaman (Baksu Mudang). Yet, as a ritual it is held formally, wishing for Baebaeng-i’s dead soul to be guided to heaven with help satisfying the grudge (Haewon), tension and enjoyment through fraud are fulfilled as the sentiment of Korean folk beliefs is that they relieve their resentful and sad feelings through gut and wish everyone good luck. Thus, the Hwanghae Province Baebaeng-i-gut is both funny and sad like other Baebaeng-i-gut, However, it is not just secular, but also sacred, which is its distinctive feature.
Through this ritual performance, the audience participating in the narrative of Baebaeng-i-gut experiences various conflicting aspects of human nature–life and death, true and false, love and hate, compassion and hatred, grudge and Haewon, etc.–in terms of enjoyment, artistry and religiousness in various ways. As-Baksu Mudang’s fraudulent gut becomes the true Jinogui-gut of Baebaeng-i, which all family members and villagers wholly believe, the actual performance, too, comes to have a ritual character through the ceremonial performance of the shaman faith, though it is based on a fictitious epic. In this way, the performance of ‘deceiving’ and ‘being deceived,’ which the audience experiences, crosses the boundaries of the conflicting gap between the real and the false, between the surface and the inside, and between fiction and truth. This enables the audience to be able to appreciate the virtual gut in the narrative in multidimensional aspects of both text and context in various ways, This study analyzed the artistic value of Yang So-un’s style of the Hwanghae Province Baebaeng-i-gut.
