문자인류학과 아르만도 페트루치의 문자연구 (Anthropology of Writing and Armando Petrucci’s Studies on Lettering)

초록

이 논문은 역사학과 문자연구의 관계를 검토하는 동시에 사회문화사적인 문자연구 방법론을 모색하기 위해서 기획되었다. 이를 위해서 특히 문자인류학에 주목하고, 그 선구적인 연구 중 하나인 이탈리아의 중세학자 아르만트루치의 연구가 새로운 문자연구에 제시하는 시사점에 대해 살펴보고 있다. 문자인류학이라는 용어 자체는 1980년대에 일부 언어학자들에 의해서 이미 사용되기는 했었지만, 최근 프랑스의 역사학자들과 영어권의 인류학자들을 중심으로 새로운 학문 분야로서 부상하고 있다. 오늘날의 문자인류학은 “문자” 자체를 연구대상으로 삼아 문자의 그래픽적인 차원을 비롯하여 여러 매체에서 나타나는 문자의 다양한 표현 양태를 연구하는 동시에, 이를 통해 인간의 읽기 능력과 쓰기 활동 등을 포함한 문자사용의 관행들과 그 사회문화적 의미를 밝히고자 하는 학문이다.
아르만도 페트루치가 제시한 ‘공시 문자’ 혹은 ‘게시 문자’의 개념은 오늘날에도 문자인류학을 연구하고자 하는 역사학자들에게 많은 영향을 주고 있다. 페트루치의 연구는 문자의 물질적, 외형적 측면 및 그래픽의 유형을 살펴보는 동시에, 이와 관련된 역사적, 사회문화적인 맥락을 중시하였다. 그는 특히 문자의 사회적 기능과 문자를 둘러싼 사회적인 권력관계를 중요하게 다루었다. 문자와 사회의 관계를 연구할 때 페트루치의 연구는 많은 영감을 제공해준다. 그의 연구는 다양한 기록매체들에서 나타나는 문자의 규범과 일탈현상에 대해서 폭넓은 시야를 갖고 연구할 필요가 있음을 일깨워준다. 그리고 문자의 외형적, 물질적 형태와 문자사용의 사회문화적 관행에서 발현되는 개인적, 집단적, 지역적, 시대적 정체성 등에 대해서 살펴볼 수 있다는 점을 환기시킨다. 요컨대, 문자인류학은 문자의 사회문화사적 연구방법론 중 하나로서, 페트루치의 연구가 제안하는 것처럼, 문자사용을 둘러싼 사회적인 권력관계 연구 및 문자사용 계층의 정체성 연구 등을 비롯해서 도시사나 책의 역사 등에도 유용하게 적용될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper aims to explore a research methodology on socio-cultural history on writing, as well as to examine the relationship between history and studies on writing. For this objective, this papers pays particular attentions to the anthropology of writing and, as one of its pioneering researches, to the epigraphic studies of the Italian mediaeval historian and paleographer Armando Petrucci. His researches on lettering can become illustrative of new studies of writing nowadays. Even though the term “anthropology of writing” was already used by some linguists back in the 1980s, it has been recently redefined as a new academic discipline by French historians and British anthropologists. Today the anthropology of writing is regarded as an interdisciplinary area that deals with graphic and material forms of writing at the same time with its social and cultural practices, including literacy issues and human activities pertinent to writing, and their social and cultural significations.
The notions such as the “monumental writing” or the “display writing,” which Armando Petrucci elaborated on, still exert influences upon historians who work on the anthropology of writing. Petrucci not only, studied the graphic typology of epigraph, letter forms and layouts, but also laid special stresses on the social functions and uses of display writings and on the power relationships that the display writings characterize. Petrucci’s studies on lettering greatly inspire studies on the relationship between writing and society. His epigraphic explorations validate the necessity for research on graphic norms and on deviant examples which various writing media bring about. His studies also propose that we can study on individual, collective, regional identities as well as characteristics of an age in light of material forms of letters and in light of socio-cultural practices of writing as well. Finally, Petrucci’s researches encourage the idea that the anthropology of writing can be extended to the studies of power relationship between social classes, to the studies on the relation between writing and identity. It could also shed light even on the studies on the urban history or on the history of books.
