한․일 민속학개론서의 내용과 특징 (Comparative Studies on Introductions to Folklore in Korea and Japan)

초록

개론서에 대한 평가는 대체로 두 가지 시각에서 논의된다. 첫째는 목차구성을 통해 학문의 범위와 각 장별 중요연구 성과를 집약적으로 정리하여 어떻게 체계화하였는가에 대해 집중된다. 둘째는 여러 성과물을 가운데 어떠한 개념이 선택되어 개론서에 배치되어 집필되고 있는가하는 문제이다. 이 논문은 한국과 일본의 개론서의 통해 양국의 민속학적 경향과 특성을 알아보고자 하였다. 여러 개론서 중에서 한일 양국의 첫 민속학개론서이거나 출판연대가 비슷하고 학계의 의견이 반영되어 비교적 독자층을 확보한 서적 3권을 각각 선택하여 비교하였다.
한일 민속학개론서는 공히 민속학이 과거의 학문인가 현재의 학문인가에 대한 물음과 더불어 과거와 현재가 연속적인 것으로 파악하고 현재중심의 학문이 되어야 한다는 학문적 성격을 명확히 하고 있다. 그러나 한국민속학개론서는 과거중심으로 일상생활을 이해하려는 학문으로 개론서가 집필되고 있다. 또한 다수의 학자가 집필하여 일관성이 결여된다는 지적에 대해 양국의 개론서 공히 자인하고 있으나 불가피한 것으로 여겨진다. 단 각 개론서는 학문적 범위와 성향을 반영하는 길잡이라 한다면 한국의 민속학개론서에는 집필자의 의도를 파악하기 어렵고 연구 성과를 정리한데 그친 아쉬운 면이 있다.
개론서의 목차는 민속의 형성과 각 분야별 연구 성향을 이해하는 좌표이다. 한국의 개론서는 민속을 구비문학, 민간신앙, 의식주생활, 통과의례, 민속예술 등이 공통으로 각 장에서 독립적으로 서술되어 있어 분야별 연구 성과를 잘 정리하고 있으나 각 분야별 상관관계를 파악하기 어려운 점이 있다. 일본의 개론서의 목차는 민속을 사회적, 경제적, 문화적 측면에서 전승을 논하거나 또는 시간과 공간의 양축으로 민속이 형성되는지를 논하고 있어 각 개론서별 특징이 나타나 있다. 현대에 농촌의 과소화에 따른 도시민속학이나 현대민속학의 필요성도 강조한 점이 일본민속학 개론서의 특징이기도하다.
역사학의 보조학문으로 출발한 일본민속학과 국문학의 보조학문으로 출발한 한국민속학이지만 두 나라의 민속학이지만 독립학문으로 점차 사회에 참여하는 실천민속을 추구하고 있다. 한일 공히 민속학의 개념정립과 더불어 새로운 개론서에 집필방향을 모색할 시기이다.

영어초록

Generally, an evaluation on introductory texts on certain subjects is discussed with two points. First, the book can be examined through its contents, in which each chapter often shows the scope and range of the subject as well as major research. Second involves outcomes selected for the introduction among research previously done. This paper will explore characteristics of introductory textbooks in Korean and Japanese folklore in both countries. For this, three introductory textbooks from each country were selected and compared The books were first editions with wide readership, and they were all published around the same time.
Most of introductory folklore textbooks published in Korea and Japan begin with a question of whether folklore is a research subject concerning the past or present. They also investigate folklore as something continuing from the past to the present and insist that folklore be more present oriented. However, in some cases we found that Korean introductory textbooks into folklore were written to understand people’s daily life in the past. Additionally, these books were published in collaboration with several researchers, so they are often inconsistent. This tends to be the case in both countries. Considering that introductory textbooks are guides to show the academic scope and tendency, it is unfortunate that Korean texts often confuse the authors’ intention and simply arrange previous study results.
The table of contents indicates the scope of the book, so readers can understand the research disposition. In the case of Korean folklore textbooks, folklore is divided into several chapters, such as oral literature, folk beliefs, life necessities, rites of passage, and folk art. But it is difficult to understand the relationship among those chapters. On the other hand, in the contents of Japanese folklore introductory texts, folklore is discussed in terms of social, economic, and cultural aspects. Additionally, they try to show how folklore is formed with biaxial arrangement of time and space and emphasize the need to study urban folklore and contemporary folklore because of depopulation of rural areas.
In both countries, folklore developed as an auxiliary study: in Japan as an auxiliary study of history and in Korea as an auxiliary study of Korean literature. Nevertheless, we find that folklore in Korea and Japan pursues more practical research with involvement from society. For both Korea and Japan, it is time to develop the notion of folklore and seek a new direction for organizing content in introductory textbooks on folklore.
