신(新)부흥회론 (A New Understanding of the Revival Meeting)

초록

본고는 한국교회에서 부흥회가 쇠퇴기에 접어들었다는 판단 아래 한국교회 부흥회의 역사적 변천과 그 의의 및 근대부흥회 자체의 발생적 맥락과 의도의 이해로부터 부흥회의 본성을 규명하고 미래 방향을 제시한다. 부흥회는 한국교회의 시원적 내러티브를 형성하며 종교대중의 좌절과 갈망을 반영하고 감정과 언어의 해방을 경험케 했다. 반면 한국교회 부흥회는 행위로 은혜를 대체하고 소음과 욕망으로 고요와 성찰을 대체하는 역기능을 하였다. 부흥회의 긍정적 및 부정적 영향은 동시적이 아니라 전자에서 후자에로 변천하며 시대의 변화에 따른 부흥회 역할의 한계를 보여준다. 따라서 부흥회의 전성기를 회복하는 것은 어려울 뿐 아니라 그럴 필요도 없다는 것이 본고의 관점이다. 부흥회는 교회의 정규적 임무가 아니며 특정한 시대적 사회적 산물이기 때문이다. 이 같은 부흥회의 기능적 한계를 심층적으로 이해하기 위해 본고는 근대 부흥회의 발생적 지향점으로서 성례에 주목하고 그 의의를 해명한다. 본고의 핵심논지는 부흥회는 교회의 본질적 은혜의 수단인 세례와 성찬이라는 양대 성례 사이에서 일어난 비정상적 문제를 해결하기 위해 특정 시대와 사회가 낳은 비상조치이며 따라서 부흥회는 그 원래 기능을 수행하는 한에서 의미가 있고 그 기능을 더 이상 수행할 수 없는 상황에서는 새롭게 변형되거나 폐지되는 것이 옳다는 것이다. 요컨대 부흥회는 세례후 학습 기능을 하는 것이 옳다. 부흥회가 본래적 기능을 수행할 뜻이 없거나 할 수 없는 상황에서 관습적으로 반복될 경우 부흥이 지향하는 교회개혁에 대한 천박한 관점과 개혁적 절박성에 대한 무감각을 유발할 위험성이 높아진다. 부흥회의 미래는 성례가 지향하는 삼위일체 하느님의 경륜적 자기계시의 이해에 초점을 둔 신학교육이어야 하며 그 방법에서 기존의 틀을 깨는 방향을 제안할 수 있다.

영어초록

The article is, under the judgement that the revival meeting is on the decline, to suggest the future direction of the revival meeting from understanding the historical transition in the Korean church and its significances, on the one hand, and the original context and intention of the modern revival meeting, on the other. The revival meeting, formulating a founding narrative for the Korean church, reflected frustrations and desires of the religious multitude and help them to experience a liberation of emotion and language. On the contrary, the revival meeting in Korea dysfunctionally replaced grace by works, serenity and introspection by noise and craving. The positive and negative effects of the revival meeting did not happen at the same time but altered from the former to the latter, showing the limit in the role of the revival meeting according to changes of the times. It is therefore the viewpoint of the study that to restore the heyday of the revival meeting is not only difficult but also unnecessary. For the revival meeting is not a regular task but a product of a particular period and society. In order to understand the functional limit of the revival meeting in depth, the article pays attention to the sacraments as the original intention point of the revival meeting and explicates the significances of that intention. The core claim of the study is that the revival meeting is a emergency measure produced by a particular period and society to resolve the inordinary problems occurring in the gap between the dual sacraments, baptism and the Lord’s Supper so that the revival meeting is meaningful as long as it fulfills its original function. If it is placed in situations to fulfill its function no more, it should be newly transformed or abolished. In short, it is right that the revival meeting functions as a postbaptismal catechesis. To habitually repeat the practice of the revival meeting in situations where it is not to perform the original function increases the danger to induce the shallow view on the church reform, which revival must intend, and the insensitivity to the urgency of reform. The future of the revival meeting should be a theological education to focus on understanding the economic self-revelation of the triune God. It is desirable to break off the established frames in its methods.
