고대 일본의 씨성 개념과 『신찬성씨록』의 개성 (The Concept of Surname in Ancient Japan and the Change of Surnames in Shinsensyouziroku)

초록

이 논문은 『신찬성씨록』에 기록된 ‘성씨(姓氏)’와 개성(改姓)의 의미를 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 고대 일본의 ‘우지(氏)’와 ‘카바네(姓)’가 씨(氏)와 성(姓)이라는 한자의 원래 의미와 다르다. 고대 일본어로 상위개념인 성은 ‘카바네’로, 하위개념인 ‘씨’는 ‘우지’로 번역되었다. 따라서 『신찬성씨록』의 성씨(姓氏)의 개념도, 혈연적인 원리에 입각한 씨족(clan)과는 다른 것으로 이해할 수밖에 없다. 또한 고대 일본의 우지(氏)가 인류학적인 개념의 부계제･모계제･쌍계제 등 어느 한쪽으로 단정하기 어렵다는 사실도 확인할 수 있었다. 다만 ‘우지’가 직능의 계승에 있어서는 부계를 중심으로 이어지는 것이 일반적인 원칙이었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이 글에서는 고대 일본의 ‘우지’의 성격을 단정하기보다는, ‘우지’가 여러 레벨에서 서로 다른 원리로 작동하고 있다는 점을 확인해 두고자 하였다.
또한 우지의 친족적인 성격을 파악할 때, 현실적인 생활 집단의 차원에서 볼 것인지 혹은 정치체제의 차원에서 볼 것인지 그 기본적인 입장이 다른 데서 비롯되는 것이다. 특히 고대 일본의 ‘우지’는 혈연적인 원리보다 정치적･사회적 원리가 중요하였고, 사회적으로 동일한 직능을 가진 집단이 동일한 ‘우지’를 칭하는 사례가 확인된다.
길전련(吉田連)의 경우도 이러한 고대 일본의 이중적인 씨성 관념에 비추어 보면 납득할 수 있다. 길전련이 대춘일조신과 관념적인 동족이 될 수 있었던 것은, 『신찬성씨록』이 편찬되는 시기에 대춘일조신과 동일한 직장(職掌)을 가지고 있었기 때문이다. 정치적인 측면에서는 동일한 직장을 가진 혈연집단들이 동일한 조상을 공유한다는 의식 하에 의제적 씨성(우지) 집단을 형성하는 편이 더욱 유리했던 것이다.
『신찬성씨록』을 중심으로 생각하면, 한반도계 도래씨족들이 도래계라는 원래의 출신 배경(諸蕃)에서 벗어나, 천황가의 후예(皇別) 및 토착 호족(臣別) 출신임을 주장하는 경우도 확인된다. 8세기 이후부터 전반적으로 ‘카바네’의 상향 조정 및 조신(朝臣) 편중 현상이 심화되는 과정에서, 한반도 도래계 씨족도 황별･신별 출신임을 주장하면서 높은 ‘카바네’를 받고자 하였음을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper is intended to consider the meaning of "surname(姓氏)" recorded in Shinsensyouziroku and change of surname. In ancient Japan, the concepts of surname(姓氏) are different from the original meaning of surname in China. Therefore, the superordinate concept of surname(姓) was translated as 'kabane' and subordinate concept of surname(氏) was translated as 'uji' in ancient Japanese. The concept of surnames in can only be understood in a way different from clan, which is based on kinship principles. In addition, it was also possible to confirm the fact that it is difficult to explain the principle of ancient Japanese clan system from the anthropological concept of patrilineal descent, matrilineal descent or cognatic kinship etc. However, it was possible to confirm that 'uji' was generally to be operated on the paternal line in the succession of functions. In this paper, rather than declaring the character of 'uji' in ancient Japan, I tried to confirm that 'uji' operates on different principles at different levels.
Additionally, when grasping the character of 'uji', it is to start where the basic position is different whether it sees in the dimension of a realistic living group or in the dimension of the political system. In particular, political and social principles are more important than ancient-descent principle in ancient Japan, and it is confirmed that groups having the same social function have the same uzi.
In the case of Kitsudanomuraji, it can be understood in light of such an ancient Japanese double lineage conception. The reason that Kitsudanomuraji was able to become an ideological descendant with the ancestors of the OKasuganonoomi, is because he had the same job as the ancestors of OKasuganonoomi during the time of compilation. From a political point of view, it was even more advantageous to form a counterfeit clan with the awareness that peoples with the same workplace share the same ancestors.
Focusing on the records of Shinsensyouziroku surnames, it is also confirmed that Korean immigrant uji claimed to be from the royal family or the native aristocrats. As the upward revision of surnames and the overweight phenomenon to Ason become in general since the 8th century, Korean peninsula uji will also try to receive high surnames insisting that they were from the royal family or native aristocrats.
