공감적 상상력에 대한 비판적 고찰: 필리핀 소설을 중심으로 (Critical Reflections on the Empathic Imagination: Focusing on Filipino Fiction)

초록

Hannah Arendt, Paul Bloom, and Judith Orloff provide a theoretical framework to challenge contemporary perspectives on empathy and empathic imagination. Based on their theoretical perspectives, this article shows that empathy and solidarity with others are profoundly influenced by diverse power dynamics and social hierarchies. Through the the works of N.V.M. Gonzalez and Jose Dalisay. this study demonstrates that solidarity does not arise from shared empathy or emotional identification with another's situation but rather from judgment and documentation of concrete realities. Solidarity begins with an acknowledgment of the conditions and circumstances others face, as well as the recognition of their incommunicable pain and sorrow. In addition, this approach allows for the practice of mutual human obligations and compassion as well, even in the relations without empathy. Literary examples of Gonzalez and Dalisay highlight these dynamics, evoking the possibility of understanding, linguistic agreement, and benevolence in spaces where empathy is absent. Thus, instead of emphasizing complete empathy, forming bonds with acceptance of incommunicability opens moments of value judgment and power relations, ultimately fostering care and compassion.
