『토지』 인물들의 코나투스에 의한 존재력의 증감 (‘Land’, Fluctuation of Existence by Characters’ Conatus)

초록

스피노자의 철학을 통하여 『토지』를 읽어보자는 생각을 가지게 되었다. 또 하나의 계기는 수필집 『생명의 아픔』에도 스피노자의 중요 개념인 ‘능동’이라는 단어를 반복해서 백번 이상 사용하고 있었기 때문이었다. 놀라운 것은 『생명의 아픔』은 스피노자의 철학을 박경리식으로 해석한 책이었다. 박경리는 철학도 삶도 스피노자를 닮고자 한 작가였다. 신에 대한 철학에서부터 샤머니즘을 해석하는 방식이 스피노자의 철학 논리를 그대로 따르고 있다. 또 스피노자와 박경리의 삶조차 스스로를 의도적으로 대중과 격리함으로써 스피노자는 자신의 철학에 박경리의 『토지』에 매진한 점도 닮아 있었다.
이번 『토지』 인물들의 정서적 반응에 따른 존재력의 증감을 살피기 위해 『토지』에서 넘어야 할 고비의 하나는 『토지』의 주요 주제의 하나이면서 우리 고유 정서인 한에 관한 것이었다. 『토지』에서 인물이 자기 존엄성을 찾기 위한 전제가 바로 한을 푸는 것이었다. 『토지』에서 한을 극복한다는 것은 자신의 존엄성을 획득, 그로 인해 삶의 변화 시점이 되는 변곡점 같은 역할을 한다. 그런 의미에서 한이 스피노자의 코나투스와 같은 개념으로 사용하고 있음을 발견했다. 한을 품고 있을 때와 한을 풀었을 때의 정서적 반응이 확연하게 구분되어 묘사되고 있다는 것도 놀라운 발견이었다.
스피노자가 사물의 변이를 통하여 자신을 표현한다는 것은 인간 개개인의 양상에 따른 삶 자체가 신의 표현이라는 것이다. 즉 『토지』에서 다양한 성격의 인물들이 펼치는 삶의 전개가 바로 신의 표현 자체라고 할 수 있다. 인간이 느끼는 기쁨이나 슬픔으로 경험하는 다양한 정서적 상태들도 스피노자는 모두 관념의 일종으로 본다. 이런 감정에 해당하는 관념은 신체의 활동 능력이나 존재력의 증가나 감소와 같은 변이 자체를 가르킨다는 것이다. 외부 신체의 영향으로 인해 우리 신체의 활동 능력이나 존재력의 증가나 감소와 같은 변이 자체를 가르킨다. 감정에는 크게 두 가지, 기쁨의 계열과 슬픔의 계열이 있다. 외부 신체의 영향으로 인해 우리 신체의 활동 능력이 증가될 때 신체적 능력의 증가분에 해당하는 정신의 관념이 바로 기쁨이라는 것이다. 이것을 스피노자는 더 큰 완전성으로 이행하는 정념이라고 정의한다. 우리 신체의 활동 능력이 감소될 때 신체적 능력이 감소분에 해당하는 정신의 관념이 슬픔이라는 정념이다.
이 논문에서는 서희를 중심으로 한 인물군 최치수, 김환, 김길상, 봉순이 등의 인물군과 용이와 관련된 인물군 등의 한의 구조와 자신의 존엄성의 회복, 존재력이 어떻게 증감하는가를 다루었다. 『토지』 인물들의 존재력을 상실하게 하는 다양한 한, 윤씨 부인의 가문의 족쇄로 인해 두 아들들을 존재력을 위협하는가 하면, 용이처럼 제도의 벽을 뛰어넘지 못해 월선이와 처 사이에서 우왕좌왕하는 가운데 주위 여자들뿐만 아니라 아들까지도 존재력을 감소시키는 경우, 조준구처럼 자신의 이익 챙기는 것에만 급급, 악의 화신으로 자기 자식에게마저 삶의 훼방꾼으로 등장, 다른 주위 사람들의 존재력을 상실하게 하는 인물로 매김된다.

영어초록

I came up with the idea to read 『Land』 through Spinoza’s philosophy. Another reason was that the word ‘active’, an important concept of Spinoza, was repeatedly used more than a hundred times in her collection of essays [The Pain of Life]. Surprisingly, [The Pain of Life] was a book that interpreted Spinoza’s philosophy in the style of Park Kyung-ri. Park Kyung-ri was a writer who tried to emulate Spinoza in philosophy and life. The way to interpret shamanism from the philosophy of God follows Spinoza’s philosophical logic. Also, even Spinoza and Park Kyung-ri’s life was similar to that by intentionally isolating herself from the public, while Spinoza devoted himself to philosophy, and Park Kyung-ri did the same to [land].
One of the hurdles to overcome in [Land] in order to examine the increase or decrease of existence according to the emotional reactions of the characters of [Land] was about Han(resentment, 한), one of the main themes of [Land] and our own emotion. In [Land], the premise for the character to find his own dignity was to solve Han. Overcoming Han in [Land] serves as an inflection point that becomes a point of change in life by acquiring one’s own dignity. In that sense, I found that Han is used as the same concept as Spinoza’s Conatus. It was also a surprising finding that the emotional response when embracing and releasing Han is clearly described with distinguished tones.
The fact that Spinoza expresses himself through the transformation of things means that life itself according to the aspects of each human being is an expression of God. In other words, it can be said that the development of life unfolded by the characters of various personalities in 『Land』 is the expression of God itself. Spinoza also sees various emotional states that humans experience as joy or sorrow as a kind of idea. The notion corresponding to these feelings refers to the mutation itself, such as an increase or decrease in the body’s ability to act or to exist. It refers to the mutation itself, such as an increase or decrease in the activity capacity or existence of our body due to the influence of an external body. There are two main types of emotions, the series of joy and the series of sadness. When our physical ability is increased due to the influence of an external body, the notion of the mind that corresponds to the increase in physical ability is joy. Spinoza defines this as a passion that moves toward greater perfection. When our physical ability is reduced, the notion of the mind whose physical ability is reduced is the passion of sorrow.
This thesis deals with the structure of Han, the recovery of one’s dignity, and the increase or decrease in the existence of the character group such as Choi Chi-su, Kim Hwan, Kim Gil-sang, and Bong-sun, centered on Seo-hee, and the character group related to Yong. In the midst of threatening the existence of two sons due to the shackles of the family of Mrs. Yun, and while they cannot jump over the walls of the system like Yong, they wander between Wolseon and his wife. If not only the women around him but also his son decrease the existence, he only pays attention to his own interests like Jo Jun-goo, and appears as a disturber of life even to his own children as the incarnation of evil.
