초록

김상덕은 2ㆍ8독립선언의 주역이자 親日反民族行爲調査特別委員會의 위원장으로 우리에게 알려져 있다. 하지만 그의 행적이 제대로 정리된 경우는 거의 없었다.
김상덕의 행적을 정리하면, 그는 민족을 우위에 두고 이념의 차이를 극복하려는 일관된 행동양식을 보여주었다. 광복후에도 특정한 정파에서 반대파를 공격하는데 나서지도 않은 채, 좌우합작운동에 뛰어들었고, 친일반민족행위자를 처벌하여 새로운 민족국가의 기강을 바로잡으려 노력하였다. 그는 당대의 시대적 가치를 실현하기 위해 가능한 모든 역량을 모으려는 활동에 매진하였다.
김상덕의 삶은 친일과 사회주의라는 경계선 내에서 선택의 연속이었다고 말할 수 있다. 그는 사회주의자가 아니었다. 그는 ‘민족운동 우파’ 가운데서도 상당히 진보적인 색채를 품었던 ‘사회주의적 민족주의자’였음이 분명하다. 그러면서도 고난 속에서 민족운동을 하는 사람들에게서 쉽게 볼 수 있는 폭발적이고 격정적인 행동이나, 생각과 입장이 다른 사람ㆍ조직과의 심한 갈등도 없었다. 그래서 그가 상대한 사람들의 정치적 스펙트럼이 상당히 넓었으면서도 생각이 다른 사람들과 원만하였다. 그는 外柔內剛의 인물이었다.

영어초록

United Front Party Movement(民族唯一黨結成運動) in Manchuria. He returned to Nanjingin 1932 and participated in the unification movement by taking part in the founding of the National Revolutionary Party(民族革命黨). He was active in this organization until the liberation of Korea, and also in the 1940s he served in the Provisional Government and the Provisional Assembly(臨時議政院). Even as the conflict between the left and right intensified over the issue of Korean trusteeship in 1946, after he had returned to Korea as a member of the Provisional Government’s primary camp, he avoided being swept into the factional maelstrom and worked without siding with any one particular right-wing group. In the middle of the turmoil, he followed Kim Gyu-sik, the center-right leader.
Kim Sang-deok showed a consistent pattern of behavior that placed the nation first and attempted to overcome ideological differences. Even after the liberation, he shunned political faction attacks on opposition groups and instead immersed himself in the left-right cooperation movement and strived to establish the proper foundations of a new nation state by bringing pro-Japanese, anti-national collaborators to justice. He pushed to bring all the forces together to realize the epochal value of his time. Kim Sang-deok’s life can be called a continuation of choices within the boundary of pro-Japanese collaboration and socialism. He was not a socialist. Among the ‘rightist figures of the national movement(民族運動 右派)’, he was clearly a ‘socialistic nationalist(社會主義的 民族主義者)’ with a very progressive tinge. But with him, there was no explosive and strong emotional behavior commonly found in figures participating in the national movement under extreme hardship or intense conflict with other people and organizations holding different views and positions. Hence he engaged with people from a very wide political spectrum and maintained a genial relationship with others who had different views. He was a man “soft outside and yet firm inside(外柔內剛).”
