도덕교육의 이념으로서의 아퀴나스의 신데레시스(Synderesis) (Synderesis of St. Thomas Aquinas as an Aim of Moral Education)

초록

이 논문은 인간 양심의 의미와 기능을 이념과 현상이라는 명백히 상이한 두 가지 차원에서 논의하고 있는 성 토마스 아퀴나스(St. Thomas Aquinas, 1224/5~1274)의 도덕이론을 교육적 관점에서 분석하기 위한 것이다. 그리고 그것으로부터 오늘날의 도덕교육의 방법적 원리를 설명하는 데 주는 시사점을 이끌어내고자 한다. 아퀴나스의 체계에서 콘스키엔시아(conscientia)와 신데레시스(synderesis)는 모두 양심으로 번역가능하며, 그 양자는 도덕과 관련된 인간 본성을 각각 ‘현상’과 그것이 지향해야 할 ‘이념’의 수준에서 규정하는 용어라고 볼 수 있다. 그리하여 이것은 결국 개념으로 이루어져 있는 도덕적 지식과 자연법으로 대변되는 도덕원리를 각각 나타낸다고 보아도 무방하다. 아퀴나스가 해명하고자 한 자연법과 인간의 자유의지의 연결 문제는 ‘지식의 획득을 통하여 어떻게 이념에 도달하게 되는가’, 또는 ‘자연에 발을 딛고 사는 인간이 어떻게 도덕적 자유를 향유하게 되는가’하는 문제라고 말할 수 있다. 자연법과 인간의 자유의지의 연결을 설명하는 데 있어 신데레시스는 이른바 매개념으로 등장하며, 따라서 신데레시스의 의미와 기능을 이해하는 일은 교육이론의 근본 문제, 즉 인간 본성과 사회적 관례의 대립 문제를 밝히는 데 있어 중요한 관건이 된다는 점에서 그 의의와 가치가 매우 크다고 볼 수 있다. 이 연구에서 밝히려고 하는 바와 같이 신데레시스는 지식의 획득과 실천이라는 능동적이고 주체적인 이성의 작용을 통하여 끊임없이 형성되는 이념이라는 뜻으로 해석될 수 있다.

영어초록

This article analyzes some aspects of St. Thomas Aquinas’ moral theory, centering on the meaning and function of conscience at the both levels of idea and phenomena, from the perspective of education, and thereby clarifying implications on the methodological principles of today’s moral education. The key question of Aquinas’ moral theory is: “What is goodness?” Following Aristotle, Aquinas distinguishes between the “good in and of itself” and the “good for us,” and his main interest is in the latter. He inherited Aristotle’s metaphysical view that, as a thing participates more in form, it becomes better. For Aquinas, “goodness” means perfection.
Then, what is perfection with respect to human beings? According to Aquinas, Man’s ultimate end is an uncreated good, viz., God, who alone is able to satisfy man’s will perfectly by His infinite goodness. The infinite goodness of God, with which human will can be satisfied, is the eternal law, defined as divine providence or by divine reason which cannot be known to human beings. we cannot know eternal law per se, we can participate in it through our natural inclination. In other words, we can know and seek eternal law indirectly through natural law, which is known through natural inclination of man. In Aquinas’ moral system, human goodness is composed of eternal law, which cannot be known through human reason, and natural law, which is the imprint of eternal law on human nature, can be perceived through human reason.
Concerning the grasp on natural law, Aquinas makes another distinction between “the superior and inferior use of reason,” referring to the former as “synderesis” and to the latter as “conscientia.” Speaking generally, inferior reason appeals to what we would call philosophical criteria―the concept of the “useful” and the “good”; superior reason appeals to exclusively theological criteria―the divinely revealed law.” Aaquinas attempts to prove that the human condition, which is subject to providence, or divine will, is conjoined with the ultimate freedom of man. I propose that the possibility for education is clearly enlightened by Aquinas’ argument that human beings are naturally inclined to perceive goodness and that this inclination is a type of habit. In this argument, education is more than teaching norms; it also is learning about various general experiences. In other words, education is the process of seeking human goodness.
