태현 『대승기신론내의약탐기』의 불신론(佛身論) 분석－불신의(佛身義) 8문 중 1문과 2문을 중심으로－ (An Analysis on the Discourse of Buddha’s Body (佛身論)in Taehyeon’s Daeseung gisil-lon naeui yaktam-gi (大乘起信論內義略探記))

초록

이 글은 신라 태현(太賢)이 지은 『대승기신론내의약탐기(大乘起信論內義略探記)』에 나오는 불신(佛身)에 대한 논의를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 태현의 이 책은 『대승기신론』의 요점을 주로 법장과 원효의 『대승기신론』 주석서에 의거하여 설명하는 것이지만, 유독 불신에 대한 논의에 있어서는 『대승기신론』의 범위를 넘어 중국 화엄학과 유식학의 문헌에 의거하여 진행하고 있다. 아마도 태현은 불신에 대한 논의에 있어서는 『대승기신론』 및 그것의 주석서에 나온 설명이 충분하지 못하다고 여긴 것으로 보인다. 태현은 불신에 대한 논의를 모두 8개의 문(門)으로 제시하는데, 논의의 특징은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 태현이 불신론을 8문으로 나눈 유래에 대해서는 법장의 『화엄오교장』과 규기의 『대승법원의림장』의 영향이 거의 비슷하게 나타난다. 8문의 명칭 등에 대해 태현은 법장과 규기의 영향을 각각 5가지씩 받고 있다.
둘째, 태현은 이 8문에 있어 화엄종 법장의 오교(五敎) 분류, 곧 소승교․시교․종교․돈교․원교의 체계에 맞추어 내용을 분석하고 있다. 문헌으로 보면, 법장의 『화엄오교장』의 영향을 크게 받고 있다. 이 중 예외는 일곱째 문으로, 여기서는 불신을 크게 소승과 대승으로 분류하고 있는 점에서 다른 문과 다르다.
셋째, 8문을 각각 5교의 체계로 설명함에 있어 특히 시교는 규기의 견해에 입각한 곳이 많이 발견된다. 이는 첫째부터 넷째까지의 총 4문에 해당한다. 이를 통해 태현이 유식학을 시교로 보았음을 확인할 수 있지만, 시교의 내용에 있어서는 법장보다는 규기의 견해를 더 존중하고 있음을 알 수 있다.
넷째, 『대승기신론』의 불신에 대한 논의는 둘째 문인 ‘불신의 형량’ 중 종교에서 다뤄졌다. 이를 통해 태현이 『대승기신론』을 화엄종의 관점에 따라 종교로 보았다는 점을 알 수 있다. 그러나 그는 불신에 국한하자면, 『대승기신론』의 논의보다 훨씬 다양한 관점에서 불신론에 접근할 수 있음을 보여주고 있다.
이 책에 나타난 태현의 불신론을 살펴보면, 그가 형식적인 면뿐 아니라 내용적인 면에서도 법장의 화엄학의 영향을 크게 받고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그러나 시교, 곧 유식학의 논의에 있어서는 규기의 견해를 매우 존중하는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 이 책을 지을 당시의 태현은 화엄학의 영향을 강하게 받고 있지만, 동시에 유식학에 있어서는 자신의 관점을 분명히 지니고 있었다고 생각된다. 태현 당시의 신라 불교계에서 태현과 같이 불신론을 화엄오교판의 체계에 따라 8문으로 설명하는 모습은 찾기 힘들다. 태현의 불신론이 당시 신라 불교계에서 차지하는 위상에 대해서는 앞으로 의상계(義相系) 화엄학자들과 비의상계(非義相系) 화엄학자들의 불신론을 함께 고찰함을 통해 더 상세히 밝혀질 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.

영어초록

This dissertation has the purpose to analyze the discussion about Buddha’s Body (佛身) shown in Daeseung gisil-lon naeui yaktam-gi (大乘起信論內義略探記, A Brief Record of Investigation of the Implicit Meanings of the Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana), which was written by Taehyeon (太賢) in the Silla Dynasty.
The book by Taehyeon explains the essentials of the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana (大乘起信論) mainly depending on the commentaries of the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana by Fazang (法藏) and Wonhyo(元曉), but only for the discussion about the Buddha’s body (佛身), he developed his opinions relying on the literature of the sciences of China’s Huayan and Yogacara (唯識) beyond the range of the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana. When it comes to the discussion about the Buddha’s body, it seems that Taehyeon regarded the explanations in the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana and its commentaries were insufficient.
He suggested Eight Doors for the discussion about the Buddha’s body, the main features are like the below.
First, the reason why Taehyeon divided the discourse of Buddha’s body into the Eight Doors was mostly influenced by Fazang’s Huayan wujiao zhang (華嚴五敎章, A Treatise on the Five Teachings of Huayan), and Kuiji’s Dasheng Fayuan yilin Zhang (大乘法苑義林章). Taehyeon was affected by Fazang (法藏) and Kuiji (窺基) for each of their 5 ideologies when it comes to the names of Eight doors, etc.
Second, Taehyeon analyzed its content of this Eight Doors following the category of Five Doctrines (五敎) by Fazang (法藏) in the Huayan School. Literatures show that he was greatly influenced by Fazang (法藏)’s Huayan wujiao zhang. However, for the exception between them, the Seventh door is different from other doors in the fact that he divided the Buddha’s body largely into Mahayana and Hinayana.
Third, it is frequently found that the primary stage of Mahayana (始教) was based on Kuiji (窺基)’s point of view to explain each of Eight Doors with the system of Five Doctrines, especially from the first to the fourth door. In this respect, I could find out that Taehyeon considered the science of Yogacara as the primary stage of Mahayana (始教), but in its content, he had rather more highly estimated Kuiji’s point of view than Fazang (法藏)’s.
Fourth, the discussion about the Buddha’s body of the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana was dealt with in the second door, the Mahayana in its final stage (終教) among ‘the form of Buddha’s body’. From this, I could find out that Taehyeon considered the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana as the Mahayana in its final stage (終教) from the Huayan School’s point of view. However, only in the aspect of Buddha’s body, he shows that it is possible to be close to the discourse of Buddha’s body from various points of view rather than to the discussion of the Awakening of Faith in Mahayana.
For the discourse of Buddha’s body by Taehyeo shown in this book, we can find out that he was largely influenced by Fazang (法藏)’s the Science of Huayan not only for its formative part, but also for its contents. But his attitude towards Kuiji’s point of view was very respectful in the discussion about the primary stage of Mahayana (始教), i.e., the science of Yogacara. So, I think that Taehyeon was greatly affected by the science of Huayan at the time when he wrote this book, and at the same time, that he had his own view on the science of Yogacara.
It’s hard to find out if the discourse of Buddha’s Body was explained as the Eight Doors following the system of the five divisions of Buddhism according to the Huayan School (華嚴五敎) like Taehyeon in the Buddhist world of the Silla Dynasty, when Taehyeon lived. I look forward to having detailed research on the state of how much Taehyeon’s discourse of Buddha’s body gave an influence to the world of Silla Buddhism at that time by studying the discourses of Buddha’s body of the Huayan scholars in Uisang’s lineage (義相系) and non-Uisang’s lineage (非義相系).
