초록

This paper examines the Arab mujahidin commander known as Khattab and his role in the Chechen resistence to Russia. After the desultory war, Russia failed to subordinate the Chechens to herself. The Chechens continued to resist aided by volunteers from other Islamic lands who want to impose a more militant, fundamentalist Islam on the Muslims of the Caucasus.
The first Chechen war radicalized much of the population and eventually resulted in the legalization of fundamentalist groups represented by the “Djamaat” battalion. This move was facilitated by foreign involvement in the person of a Chechen-Jordanian Fathi. As a result of Fathi's influence, Khattab and other veterans of the Afghanistan war were enlisted for combat service in Chechnya.
Khattab fighted the Soviet army in Afghanistan and took part in wars fought in mainly Muslim parts of the former Soviet Union. During the First Chechen War, his units participated in fighting Russian infidels and were credited with several devastating ambushes on Russian columns in the Chechen mountains.
After the conclusion of war, Khattab also founded several training camps for Islamic fighters along the lines of camps in Afghanistan. The Russian government has accused Khattab of links with Usama Bin Ladin. Dagestan was ideal for Khattab’s goal of creating a pan-Caucasian Islamic state because of the strong ties with Wahhabis. Although the Wahhabi enthusiasm for the Dagestani invasion ended in failure and Khattab was killed by Russian security forces, the subject, so-called Islamic mujahideen network in Chechnya, demands further investigation.
